UNC Glee Club The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of Music presents the UNC Glee Club Laura Buff Alexander & Daniel M. Huff, conductors Shoko Abe & Frank Pittman, pianists Sunday, May 2, 2021 3:00 p.m. Moeser Auditorium Program Ubi caritas Ola Gjeilo (b. 1978) Where charity and love are, God is there. Christ’s love has gathered us into one. Let us rejoice and be glad in Him. Let us fear and love the living God. And let us love one another with a sincere heart. Amen. Litanies a la vierge noire Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) Lord, have mercy on us, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Jesus Christ, hear us, Jesus Christ, grant our prayer. God the Father, Creator, have mercy on us. God the Son, Redeemer, have mercy on us. God the Holy Spirit, Sanctifier, have mercy on us. Holy Trinity, who are one God, have mercy on us. Holy Virgin Mary, pray for us, Virgin, queen and patron, pray for us. Virgin, whom Zacchaeus the tax collector has made us know and love, Virgin, for whom Zacchaeus or St. Amadour raised this shrine, pray for us. Queen of the shrine which Saint Martial consecrated, and where he celebrated his holy mysteries, Queen, near whom Saint Louis kneeled to ask of you the blessing of France, pray for us. Queen, to whom Roland consecrated his sword, pray for us. Queen whose banner wins the battles, pray for us. Queen whose hand delivered the captives, pray for us. Our Lady, whose pilgrimages are enriched with special favors, Our Lady, whom impiety and hatred have often sought to destroy, Our Lady, whom the masses visit as in olden times, pray for us. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, forgive us. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant our prayer. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Our Lady, pray for us so that we may be worthy of Jesus Christ. Ich wollt’ meine Lieb’ Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) I wish that I could pour my love Into a single word, I’d give it to the merry winds, Who’d bear it merrily away. They’d bear it to you, beloved, This word so full of love, You’d hear it at every moment, You’d hear it in every place. And when for your nightly slumber You’ve scarcely closed your eyes, My image will then pursue you Into your deepest dream. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot arr. William L. O Comforter, to Thee we cry, Thou heavenly gift of God most high, Thou Fount of life, and Fire of love, and sweet anointing from above. Thy light to every sense impart, and shed thy love in every heart; thine own unfailing might supply to strengthen our infirmity. • Broadway Noir: Film Noir and Musical Comedy in City of Angels (1989)
BROADWAY NOIR: FILM NOIR AND MUSICAL COMEDY IN CITY OF ANGELS (1989) BY JASON CHARLES WITT THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music in Music with a concentration in Musicology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2019 Urbana, Illinois Master’s Committee: Professor Jeffrey Magee, Chair and Director of Research Professor Gayle Sherwood Magee Abstract City of Angels (1989) uniquely transforms the structural, thematic, and visual elements of film noir through the conventions of musical comedy and thereby subjects both genres to affectionate satire. This essay explores the connections between these idiosyncratic forms of entertainment, particularly in the ways that noir devices and tropes emerge from songs penned by Cy Coleman and David Zippel, to reach a greater understanding of the ways in which City of Angels depicts and comments on the cultural history of film noir. My methodology looks to literary criticism and philosophy written on both film noir and hardboiled fiction for theorization on the core elements of those genres. Those traits are measured against City of Angels as a work, primarily musically but also in its lyrics and dialogue, using frameworks presented within the work of Raymond Knapp, Stacy Wolf, Scott McMillin, and other scholars of musical theatre. Where relevant, I engage with histories, music theory, and non-scholarly publications for social context and reception. The essay is organized along archetypal lines, namely the private investigator and femme fatale, to show how those models inform the show’s gendered characterization. It exposits indices for the 1940s and the classic Hollywood era, all pointing toward a framework where the musical comedy can function as a cultural history.

  • The Bacchae the Bacchae by Euripides, in a Version by David Greig
RCS The Bacchae by Euripides, in a version by David Greig Programme Wed 4 Nov - Thu 5 Nov 2020 New Athenaeum Theatre The Bacchae by Euripides, in a version by David Greig This amateur production is presented by special arrangement with Casarotto Ramsay & Associates RCS Welcome Welcome Welcome to the Royal Conservatoire's first live theatre performance of this new academic year. This production of David Greig's version of Euripides' The Bacchae, directed by Finn den Hertog, is the result of the first in-person rehearsal process carried out by the BA Acting students since the UK entered pandemic lockdown in March 2020. Our final year BA Acting students, supported by their colleagues from the BA Production, Arts and Design, and BA Production Technology Management programmes, have risen to the enormous challenge of rehearsing and staging a play while maintaining social distancing, reduced capacity rehearsal rooms, different approaches to voice work and the safe handling of props, to name just a few Covid led adaptations. Live performance is at the heart of what we do at the Conservatoire and it is testament to the enormous amount of work from everyone over the past 6 months, in order to facilitate in-person rehearsals and live performance, against all the odds, that this is about to happen. The Bacchae features half of our BA Acting Class of 2021, the other half will be bringing David Greig's The Speculator to the same stage in December. The students also continue to explore ways to create theatre and tell stories via online medium and begin to prepare for their Graduate Showcase events planned for March 2021.

  • City of Angels Premiered on Broadway in 1989, and Ran for Over Three Years
Director’s Note The 1940s… The height of Hollywood’s Golden Age, and of film noir. Bogart and Bacall. Cagney. Hayward. Mysteries solved by Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade. Mystery novels by Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Rex Stout, and many others. A sleek, stylized era when postmen always rang twice, and the most famous Falcon was Maltese, not Millennium. The adventure of creating such Hollywood films was often as twisting and twisted as the mysteries themselves. Seldom has a glimpse of both these real and reel worlds been presented together. Until now. City of Angels premiered on Broadway in 1989, and ran for over three years. It received eleven Tony Award nominations, and won six including Best Musical, Book, and Score. The backstage musical—going behind the scenes of a stage show—is a prolific genre:42nd Street; The Producers; Kiss Me, Kate; and many others. Rare is the musical that goes behind the making of a film. InCity of Angels, we see the mystery novelist, Stine, adapting his novel for the Hollywood ma- chine—while we see the film itself unfold, authentically in black and white. More than a gimmicky parallel, we see how Stine’s real world influences his film’s world, and vice versa—for better and for worse. The era’s glamour is captured in the incredible jazz score of Cy Coleman (The Will Rogers Follies, Sweet Charity, Barnum, Little Me, The Life…), the enticingly intelligent lyrics of David Zippel (Neil Simon’s The Good- bye Girl, Disney’s Mulan and Hercules), and the hilarious, poignant book by Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H; Oh, God!; Tootsie; Blame it on Rio; A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum).
