While initially focused on participants from Woodland Park Zoo, Pacific Science Center and Seattle Aquarium, SYCAN has generated interest and involvement from a diverse set of stakeholders that extend beyond the museum sphere—including community-based organizations, educational institutions, and city and county government. Additionally, SPR received authorization to acquire property adjacent to Terry Pettus Park on Lake Union, adding waterfront park space to a well-used street end in the Eastlake Residential Urban Village, as well as approval for the reappointment of Andréa Akita to the Board of Park Commissioners and Deepa Sivarajan (Seattle LGBTQ Commission rep) and Shelani Vanniasinkam (Immigrant and Refugee Commission rep) to the Seattle Park District Oversight Committee.

That’s right. A shark tank. One that visitors to the waterfront can observe without ever entering the aquarium. Boosters believe the dramatic vistas and dar- ing design of the Ocean Pavilion will make the aquarium one of Seattle’s must-see attractions, along with the Space Needle and Pike Place Market, and brand Seattle as a global leader in marine conservation efforts. The building is slated to open in 2023 as part of the city’s ambitious new waterfront. With the Alaskan Way Viaduct’s demolition, the waterfront will be transformed into a 20-acre urban park, and the Ocean Pavilion will become the centerpiece, occupying the most prominent spot. “The Ocean Pavilion will be at the crossroads of the city,” says Bob Davidson, Seattle Aquarium president and chief executive officer. “It’s a gift, and it’s also a statement of the importance of Seattle’s relationship to the water and the ocean.” For locals underwhelmed by today’s cramped aquarium, and by a waterfront largely occupied by trinket shops and tourist traps, the upcoming overhaul will be stunning.     SEATTLE PARKS FOUNDATION Connections SPRING/SUMMER 2014 Transforming the Cheasty Greenspace When Mary DeJong and her husband Joel, moved to Seattle more than a decade ago, they fell in love with their neighbor- hood. “We knew we needed to be here,” DeJong says, stand- ing outside her home in Rainier Valley. “We also knew that we wanted to participate in something, and at the time we couldn’t really name what that something was.” That something turned out to be half a block away, just up her street: 10 acres of forest between the Lockmore neighborhood on Beacon Hill and Columbia City. This is the Cheasty Greens- pace at Mountain View, whose slopes are now covered with ferns Mary DeJong at a restoration work and other young native plants. A winding footpath reveals peek-a-boo views of the Cascades party. Photo: Tom Reese and takes hikers past benches made of cedar logs. It’s a place where DeJong and her daughter, Anna, hike (and where Anna gets excited when she finds a slug). It’s an escape for DeJong’s two boys, who outfit themselves with whistles and play. It’s also a destination for groups from the nearby Boys & Girls Club and the Refugee Women’s Alliance, who participate in wilderness camps. But back in 2003, when it was just DeJong, her husband, and a black Labrador named Jackson, this place looked totally different. “It was a drape of darkness,” DeJong recalls. “We had a dog, and we thought, ‘Oh, let’s take him into the woods.’ And it was on that first walk when we discovered, ‘Oh, this isn’t a wel- coming place.’” The place was thick with blackberries and curtains of English ivy.
