offer many benefits for people and communities, the environment, wildlife and the local economy. The overall provision of publicly accessible open space is low in Tower Hamlets compared to most other London Boroughs and national standards, and some parts of the borough are acutely deficient. The borough has a growing population which combined with plans for additional housing presents a changing picture of need over the coming years. 1.2 A strategic approach is required to protect existing spaces and to ensure that the most effective use is made of resources for improvements to access, quality and availability of publicly accessible open space. A key function of the Strategy is to identify the measures required to mitigate the impacts of a growing population based on an assessment of future need relative to current provision. 1.3 Updating the Strategy focuses on refreshing the quantitative and qualitative assessment of open space in Tower Hamlets to guide future investment in new and existing open space. The update also ensures that the Strategy remains consistent with the refreshed Community Plan. The Strategy is not intended as a day to day guide to service management but as a tool for safeguarding the benefits of open space for future residents. 1.4 Tower Hamlets covers an area of less than 8 square miles. It has an estimated population of over 250,000, which is growing rapidly with an increase of over 60,000 since 2001. Tower Hamlets now has one of the highest population densities in London and one of the highest levels of high- rise housing. These two facts have a profound implication for the provision, role and quality of open space in the borough. 1.5 At the same time as seeing significant job growth in the financial sector, Tower Hamlets remains one of the most deprived areas in the country. About three-quarters of children living in Tower Hamlets are in low-income families. Unemployment rates are significantly above London and national rates. The percentage of claimants who are long-term unemployed (over 6 months) is significantly higher than for both Greater London and England. 1.6 Open spaces, and particularly parks, are playing an increasingly important role for tourism by providing some of the most striking images of the borough and an important infrastructure to support some of the largest festivals and events in the UK. The potential for open spaces to contribute to economic regeneration must continue to be developed, but increased event usage needs to be managed carefully. 1.7 Tower Hamlets’ population is ethnically diverse. The GLA 2010 Round Ethnic Group Projections identify that in 2011 almost half (46.6%) of the population is made up of minority ethnic groups. The largest of these groups is the Bangladeshi community, comprising 29.6% of the population. It is the largest 4 single minority ethnic population of any London borough. There are also sizeable Chinese and African groups, including a growing Somali community. 1.8 A significant number of young people live in Tower Hamlets. 19.3% of the population is under 15 years old, compared to 19.1% for Greater London. The 20 - 39 year old age group represents 46.7% of the total population compared to 35.2% for Greater London. 1.9 With such

    October 2013 Household income in Tower Hamlets Insights from the 2013 CACI Paycheck data 1 Summary of key findings The Corporate Research Team has published the analysis of 2013 CACI Paycheck household income data to support the Partnerships knowledge of affluence, prosperity, deprivation and relative poverty and its geographical concentration and trends in Tower Hamlets. The median household income in Tower Hamlets in 2013 was £ 30,805 which is around £900 lower than the Greater London average of £ 31,700. Both were considerably above the Great Britain median household income of £27,500. The most common (modal) household annual income band in Tower Hamlets was £17,500 in 2013. Around 17% of households in Tower Hamlets have an annual income of less than £15,000 while just below half (48.7%) of all households have an annual income less than £30,000. 17% of Tower Hamlets households have an annual income greater than £60,000. 10 out of the 17 Tower Hamlets wards have a household income below the Borough’s overall median income of £30,805.     November 2016 Brick Lane Born: Exhibition and Events Gilbert & George contemplate one of Raju's photographs at the launch of Brick Lane Born Our main exhibition, on show until 7 January is Brick Lane Born, a display of over forty photographs taken in the mid-1980s by Raju Vaidyanathan depicting his neighbourhood and friends in and around Brick Lane. After a feature on ITV London News, the exhibition launched with a bang on 20 October with over a hundred visitors including Gilbert and George (pictured), a lively discussion and an amazing joyous atmosphere. Comments in the Visitors Book so far read: "Fascinating and absorbing. Raju's words and pictures are brilliant. Thank you." "Excellent photos and a story very similar to that of Vivian Maier." "What a fascinating and very special exhibition. The sharpness and range of photographs is impressive and I am delighted to be here." "What a brilliant historical testimony to a Brick Lane no longer in existence. Beautiful." "Just caught this on TV last night and spent over an hour going through it. Excellent B&W photos." One launch attendee unexpectedly found a portrait of her late father in the exhibition and was overjoyed, not least because her children have never seen a photo of their grandfather during that period. Raju's photos and the wonderful stories told in his captions continue to evoke strong memories for people who remember the Spitalfields of the 1980s, as well as fascination in those who weren't there. Georgina Green My purpose in writing this little book is to tell how the ordinary people have used Epping Fo rest in the past, but came to enjoy it only in more recent times. I hope to give the reader a glimpse of what life was like for those who have lived here throughout the ages and how, by using the Forest, they have physically changed it over the centuries. The Romans, Saxons and Normans have each played their part, while the Forest we know today is one of the few surviving examples of Medieval woodland management. The Tudor monarchs and their courtiers frequently visited the Forest, wh ile in the 18th century the grandeur of Wanstead House attracted sight-seers from far and wide. The common people, meanwhile, were mostly poor farm labourers who were glad of the free produce they could obtain from the Forest. None of the Forest ponds are natural . some of them having been made accidentally when sand and gravel were extracted . while others were made by Man for a variety of reasons.
