  • 1 a Conversation with Robert Fisher of Willard Grant
A Conversation with Robert Fisher of Willard Grant Conspiracy by Frank Goodman (Puremusic.com, 5/2004) A publicist friend of mine drew me aside in cyberspace one day and told me about someone that I needed to cover. I think it was his polite way of saying that I might not be acquainted with this person’s music, but that I ought to be. Of course he was right, as he tends to be in these matters. I was aware that there was a legend of sorts attached to the band called Willard Grant Conspiracy, but only that. It centers around Robert Fisher, the only current founding member of a revolving cast of characters spread the four corners of the globe. WGC has had over thirty members, in fact. (Robert says something like, “If anyone says that they play with us, they probably do…”) It’s set up so that people can contribute when that works in their life, coming in and out as circumstances allow. The band itself is originally from the Boston area. Fisher spent several decades there, and he and longtime cohort Paul Austin recorded four CDs, three put out by Rykodisc, that have become cult favorites: 3 a.m. at Fortune Otto’s (1996), Flying Low (1998), Mojave (1999) and Everything’s Fine (2000). The new album, Regard the End, is on the Kimchee label. It’s a beautiful folk Gothic kind of work, serious material joyfully rendered. After it was completed, Robert moved back to the home of his youth, the Palmdale/Lancaster area of southern CA, where both Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart grew up.

  • KURT WAGNER of LAMBCHOP Interview Although the Band Had
KURT WAGNER of LAMBCHOP Interview Although the band had been together in one permutation or another for a time before the event, it really is ten years since Lambchop released its debut album. Time waits for no lamb. With that collection of beautiful, twisted songs, this strange, double-strange, many-legged Nashville outfit went a long way to ensure that the average discerning listener could never view the genre known as ‘country’ in the same way again. In either I Hope You’re Sitting Down (sleeve) or Jack’s Tulips (spine), we were presented with country music seemingly from some parallel dimension, where everything is kinda blurred and opaque. But, though country is just how Lambchop had somehow ended up largely sounding, there has always been so much more to the experience than that. As is, say, Tindersticks, this is a soul band, a rock band, a jazz band, a lounge band and a punk band. In a short, a band that just follows instincts and one that has freely explored any genre it saw fit, charting new territory with old maps. Lambchop’s has been an unforced, meandering and gentle evolution to this point, where they can be called nothing but an endlessly entertaining, thrilling, heartbreaking and hilarious, great band - way, way beyond Nashville, yet still holding its greater traditions dear. Considering that decade and that ten years is a traditionally convenient block of time over which to take stock or reminisce, there appears a neat synchronicity with that record and the recorded offerings of Lambchop 2004. Whereas that first album seemed to bear two titles, the band has progressed to such a position of critical comfort and respectable sales that it can be afforded the privilege of releasing two albums that, in Awcmon and Noyoucmon almost bear the same title! A tenuous-to-pointless observation, perhaps, but there you go.

  • Lambchop - Damaged: an Evening with the Dafo String Quartet and Hands Off Cuba
2006-08-22 17:43 CEST Lambchop - Damaged: An evening with The Dafo String Quartet and Hands Off Cuba 13.10 Stockholm - Södra Teatern 14.10 Göteborg - Trädgår'n Kurt Wagner har med sitt kollektiv Lambchop under åren, skiva för skiva, förfinat sitt sound. Wagner sjunger att han vill find a 27 inch color TV / Has to be non working / An RCA cause I need the parts.

A revolution in roots-rock began in the late 1980s in Chicago with Souled American and Uncle Tupelo, and in the 1990s became a new genre altogether. It was Nashville's country music transposed into the small bedrooms of the disaffected youth in the small towns of the heartland. Those bands had rediscovered country and folk music for the hardcore generation: their descendants dumped hardcore for the most spartan and traditional of sounds. Led by singer-songwriters Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy, Uncle Tupelo (1) pretty much invented a new genre when they released No Depression (1990), a collection of country ballads played with the fury of hardcore. Abandoning the punk edge and focusing on the depressed stories, the acoustic tour de force of March 16-20 1992 (1992) invented more than a genre: it created a movement for sincere, populist and political music. Anodyne (1993) hinted at the mainstream appeal of this idea. After they parted ways, the two leaders would form two of the most influential bands of the 1990s: Son Volt and Wilco.
