Within the last financial year Australia has participated in four Davis Cup ties and members will recall that the year commenced with a changing of the guard with the retirement of John Fitzgerald as team Captain and the appointment of Patrick Rafter as his successor. Pat started on a successful note in July 2011 by leading Australia back to a World Group Play-off with a 3/1 win over China in Beijing. The successful team was comprised of Lleyton Hewitt, Chris Guccione, Bernard Tomic and Marinko Matosevic. It was then off to the Royal Sydney Golf Club over the weekend 16-18 September 2011 for the World Group Play-off against Switzerland where our team of Lleyton Hewitt, Chris Guccione, Bernard Tomic and Matthew Ebden suffered a narrow 3/2 defeat at the hands of the Swiss lead by Roger Federer. Consequently, Australia was once again relegated to the Asia/ Oceania Group I with a first round tie against China PR which was played at the Geelong Lawn Tennis Club over the weekend 10-12 February 2012. There, the team of Lleyton Hewitt, Chris Guccione, Bernard Tomic and Matthew Ebden enjoyed a comfortable 5/0 victory. The venue for the second round tie was the Queensland Tennis Centre in Brisbane. With Lleyton Hewitt unavailable for selection due to injury, he was replaced by Marinko Matosevic who was joined by Chris Guccione, Bernard Tomic and Matthew Ebden. Pleasingly, Australia defeated the team of the Korean Republic 5/0. It is with a particularly heavy heart that I must acknowledge the passing, albeit beyond the end of the year under review, of two THE AUSTRALIAN DAVIS TENNIS FOUNDATION annual report 2012 4 former office-bearers whose respective contributions to the Foundation throughout its formative years are, in each case, immeasurable. First, on 8 August 2012 and in his 97th year, our inaugural Treasurer Rev Fr Gerry Sullivan, who served in this capacity for 17 years and was meticulous in his oversight of our financial records. Two days later, on 10 August 2012, we lost our mentor and friend, Jack May. Jack was the second elected President of the Foundation in which capacity he served for 21 years and these were followed by a further 15 years as our Immediate Past President. He will be remembered for the warmth of his friendship and for his consummate management and marketing skills which were reflected in the growth and consolidation of our membership throughout the period. Jack's guiding presence and influence will be sorely missed. I am also pleased to report that the appointment of Robert Parker as our Marketing Administrator has been an outstanding success. Robert has developed a close working relationship with Judy Pullyblank in the operation of the Foundation’s Secretariat. The same can be said about Robert Jamieson who, in addition to discharging his onerous responsibilities as our Honorary Treasurer has demonstrated his superb IT skills which have been applied with considerable advantage to enhance communications between the Foundation and its membership. Our Honorary Secretary, Graeme Cumbrae-Stewart, has continued to discharge his corporate responsibilities in an exemplary manner and I am indeed most grateful for his wise counsel for which I thank him on behalf of all members. I must also express our gratitude to Zanity, which has designed and developed our unique website to the stage that it can provide valuable historical as well as current topical information for the benefit of those who access it via www.adctf.org. Finally, thanks are also due to Rod May and to Ray Briggs who have each continued to discharge the responsibilities entrusted to THE AUSTRALIAN DAVIS TENNIS FOUNDATION annual report 2012 5 them. I also thank my fellow Directors for their ongoing contributions and I look forward to their continuing support as we endeavour to fulfil the Objectives of the Foundation as it prepares for what can be perceived to be more difficult and challenging times ahead. Under normal circumstances we like to give news about some of our junior tennis players as well as the various age group County teams. As tennis at all levels has been severely disrupted since March, the contents of this year’s handbook will be different in that we have very few results to include but hopefully the changes we have made will prove both interesting and informative. We thought it would be a change to ask some of our junior county players to write about their tennis experiences so we asked Rhona Cook (18U Cheshire Junior Champion) to give an insight into what it was like playing in the 18U Junior County Cup event (played in February).
