For more information, please contact [email protected]. “The Most Patient of Animals, Next to the Ass:” Jan Smuts, Howard University, and African American Leadership, 1930 Abstract: Former South African Prime Minister Jan Smuts’ 1930 European and North American tour included a series of interactions with diasporic African and African American activists and intelligentsia. Among Smuts’s many remarks stands a particular speech he delivered in New York City, when he called Africans “the most patient of all animals, next to the ass.” Naturally, this and other comments touched off a firestorm of controversy surrounding Smuts, his visit, and segregationist South Africa’s laws. Utilizing news coverage, correspondence, and recollections of the trip, this article uses his visit as a lens into both African American relations with Africa and white American foundation work towards the continent and, especially, South Africa. -

SUBMERGED DIFFUSION AND THE AFRICAN -AMERICAN ADOPTION OF THE GANDHIAN REPERTOIRE * Sean Chabot Amsterdam School for Social Science Research (ASSR) University of Amsterdam As a recent graduate from Howard University, James Farmer moved to Chicago in August 1941, where he found a job as race relations sec- retary of the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR). The one thing these two institutions had in common was their close a Ynity with the Gandhian philosophy of nonviolence. On the one hand, Farmer’s mentor at Howard University, Howard Thurman, had personally met and spoken with Gandhi at his ashram, while Mordecai Johnson, the university presi- dent, was famous for his eloquent speeches on India’s nonviolent strug- gle for independence. On the other hand, as an interracial and Christian paci st organization, the FOR had long been interested in the Gandhian approach to activism. This social environment, as well as his childhood confrontations with racial bigotry in the Deep South, inspired the young Farmer to formulate a plan for adapting the Gandhian repertoire of contention to the situation faced by African-Americans. After discussing his ideas with friends and fellow activists, he wrote a memo to FOR president A.J. Muste entitled “Provisional Plans for Brotherhood Mobil- ization.” In it, Farmer proposed a Gandhian framework for ghting racial injustice in the United States: From its inception, the Fellowship has thought in terms of developing de nite, positive and e Vective alternatives to violence as a technique for resolving con ict. It has sought to translate love of God and man, on one hand, and hatred of injustice on the other, into speci c action. -

PRIDE 2020 The Strategic Plan for Delaware State University PRIDE 2020: Personal Responsibility in Delivering Excellence Statement from the President It is with tremendous pride and pleasure that I present to you the Strategic Plan for Delaware State University – Personal Responsibility in Delivering Excellence – or PRIDE 2020. Delaware State University is a public, comprehensive 1890 land-grant university established by the Delaware General Assembly on May 15, 1891. In these 123 years, DSU has gone from being a State College offering five courses of study in agriculture, chemistry, the classics, engineering and science to a University offering its 4,505 students 52 baccalaureate, 25 master’s and five doctoral degree programs through 21 academic departments. The University has an Honors Program and a number of strategic international partnerships. In addition to its 356-acre main campus with 50 buildings, DSU also has two farm properties, locations in Wilmington and Georgetown, and a fleet of planes for the Aviation Program with a base of operations at the Delaware Air Park in Cheswold. It has been quite a journey from our humble beginnings. DSU has made significant strides along the way to the year 2014. But that was then, and this is now. PRIDE 2020 outlines for you the steps we will collectively take as we begin our journey toward the next decade – a journey that insures we are a University that prepares tomorrow’s leaders, invests in the community’s well-being and meets global challenges. I charged the University Strategic Planning Council with delivering a plan that was comprehensive, challenging and concise. -

INTRODUCTION hen I consider the magnificent richness of the human relationships that have filled my life with gifts of hope, loving guidance, and deep inspiration, I can never find Wadequate thanks for the powerful presence of Howard Thurman. And because this son of Africa’s people in America was so great a gift to me, I am very happy to share him with you in this introductory selection of audio recordings from his vast storehouse of life-giving wisdom. I am convinced that this man, who died almost 30 years ago, is a voice that our nation needs to hear now, a spirit whom we need to engage now, as we struggle to understand ourselves as a people—our identity, our purpose, and the meaning of our marvelous diversity. I think that we need him now because we are still trying to understand our own role as members—loving, caring, sharing members—of the human community. It was as a graduate student at the University of Chicago in the 1950s that I first met Thurman on the pages of Jesus and the Disinherited, his classic message of hope, challenge, and encouragement to those (as he put it) who stand at a moment in human history with their backs against the wall. -
