Martin Spengler's work focuses on built environments and the ongoing Furtherm ore Spengler uses whitew ash to reunify the surface and graphite relation betw een con struction an d decon struction . Th e artists' exploration to s tre s s th e c o n to u rs a n d fo rm s w ith in th e w o rk s . E a c h p a rt o f th e p ro c e s s of m aterial introduces his unique technique and aesthetic which he has rem ains visible in the final resu lt: the ch aracteristic texture of the matured over many years. His work invites us to engage with structures cardboard and the treatm ent that has been applied to it. and m aterials in new and unexpected ways in which we are asked to challenge the function of these form s and their im pressions. As the m an- Spengler com bines two manners of sculpting: building by adding material made is ever-growing and expanding within the world, it is an important onto a base and building by taking aw ay m aterial. Thus the artist is working tim e to c o n s id e r th e s tru c tu re s w e s u rro u n d o u rs e lve s b y. W ith th e s e in tw o old techniques of sculpting w ith a very contem porary and fragile' questions in mind, and coinciding with the Chicago Architecture Biennial, material that takes his work into the present times. The complex this is the perfect tim e to consider the w orks of S pengler on such a large fabrication process, the visual dynam ism and the ornam ental dim ension of scale within Expo Chicago. Martin Spengler's works is recognizable at first sight and unique on the current art scene. Within his technique Spengler layers sheets of corrugated cardboard, norm ally used in packaging, to form a block from which he cuts the details Spengler studied painting at the Akadem ie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, of his m otifs. This literal cut and puncture of material is what makes his Germany, where he was a masters student of Karin Kneffel (2010). His work abstract work so notable. Coming closer, the viewer identifies urban landscapes as well as contem porary and gothic architecture. Com ing even closer, the im age blurs up again and the lines of the material replace the motif. At every stage of this optical gam e, the view er can appreciate the com plexity and subtlety of th e w o rk s .

Our booth will feature a free standing sculpture, a diptych and a relief trip tyc h , re p re s e n ta tive o f th e a rtis t's c u rre n t p ro d u c tio n . T h e s e w o rk s illustrate the artists interest in m an m ade objects –as he states, w ith “stru ctures that reflect a particu lar social even t or arch itectural fun ction ”. The triptych represents facades of modern housing blocks interrupted in one of the panels by a large fracture, as indicated by its title “S ollbru ch stelle” (predeterm ined breaking point). Th e w ork at on ce considers the weight and the fragility of the structures it resem bles. In the free standing sculpture “K athedrale” the structure reassem bles an allover com position that seem s to continue further as the black wooden plinth is carved to follow the lines of the sculpture, em phasizing its vertical movement.
