The colorful festival of Holi is just around the corner, taking your enthusiasm to the next level. But 8 days before joyous festival considered highly unfavorable. This period is known as ‘Holashtak’. StartingMarch 22, Monday, the most ominous days of the year are about to begin. Holashtak Meaning Holashtak is a Sanskrit word made from the conjunction of ‘Hola’ + ‘Ashtak’, meaning 8 days before Holi. This adverse period begins on the Ashtami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Phalgun maah and continues till the Purnima Tithi – the day of Holi. Holashtak is mainly celebrated in North Indian states like Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Holashtak Period 2021 This year in 2021, Holashtak starts on March 22, Monday and ends on March 1 https://www.acharyavshastri.com/ Festivals Blogs By - Acharya V Shastri www.acharyavshastri.com 28, Sunday (Holi). Why is Holashtak unfavorable? This time of 8 days before Holi is considered ominous because planets like Sun, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Venus are said to undergo furious changes, causing a bad impact on the lives of people, during this term. Things to Avoid during Holashtak During this bad time of Holashtak, doing unfavorable things must be abstaining. People do not do any auspicious ceremonies like marriage, naming of a child, engagement and housewarming celebrations. And also do not starts or purchase anything new in this period like buying property, jewellery or a vehicle, making vital investments, giving an interview, taking loans and starting a new business or partnership. There is no auspicious work before the ritual of Holika Dahan. Doing so is said to bring bad luck and you do not get any good results from things started during this ominous period. Things to Do during Holashtak The 8 days of Holashtak are considered very satisfying for doing good deeds, donating alms, helping others and doing charity. If someone dies during Holashtak, his ‘Shanti Kriya’ must be doing before incinerating the body. On the 1st day of Holashtak, people choose a crossroad (chauraha) for doing Holika Dahan, clean this place and sprinkle the Gangajal in this area and place some dried wood, grass and dung uple here. On each day of Holashtak, people collect and add dried branches and twigs, which represent negative energies. All of these are then burnt on the day of Holika Dahan. All over the Hindu world Hindus celebrate MAHASHIVRATRI on Chaturdashi that falls on 24th Feb and they are fine with that. Why are few among us comparing Herath with MahaShivratri? Our Hyreath deciding factor is Triyodashi and Mahashivratri is based on Chatrudashi as per Dharam Sindu. This is the reason Triyodashi Festival cannot be celebrated on chaturdashi. 4. At what time Triyodashi starts on 23rd Feb? Triyodashi is starting at 09-19 PM on 23rd Feb which decides the Hyreath to be solemnized on 23rd Feb. 2017. 5. What is sparsh and what is its importance? • Bhakti: the Mystica
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL FOR INNOVATIVE RESEARCH IN MULTIDISCIPLINARY FIELD ISSN – 2455-0620 Volume - 3, Issue - 7, July - 2017 Bhakti: The Mystica Richa Sharma PhD Scholar , Department of English, University of Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir, India Email.- [email protected] Abstract: The devotional worship of God with the ultimate object of attaining moksha or salvation is called Bhakti. The cult of Bhakti is as old as the Indian religious traditions going back to the prehistoric times of the Indus valley civilization and culture. We find mention of Bhakti in the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Epics and the Puranas. The most significant saints related to Bhakti Cult were Sankaracharya, Ramanuja, Ramananda, Kabir, Guru Nanak, Vallabhacharya, Mirabhai and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The basic significance of the Bhakti saints was their partial success in creating a climate of understanding between Hindus and Muslims and providing a framework within which they could meet without synthesis. Thus, the Bhakti movement had profound significance in the religious, social, economic and cultural spheres of its contemporary times. Key Words: devotional worship, Bhakti movement, Bhakti cult, lord Krishna. 1. INTRODUCTION - BHAKTI: THE MYSTICA: The devotional worship of God with the ultimate object of attaining moksha or salvation is called Bhakti. The word “Bhakti” comes from the root word “bhaj” which means “faith, devotion, attachment, worship or adoration to God” and also from the root word “bhaj sevayam”, which means “to serve”. Therefore, the word “bhakti” stands for affection, love or service. We find mention of Bhakti in the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Epics and the Puranas. The Narada Bhakti Sutra, a well-known sutra venerated within the traditions of Hinduism, starts off by defining “Bhakti” to be the form of supreme love.

  • Indian Calendrical Calculations
Indian Calendrical Calculations Nachum Dershowitz Edward M. Reingold† Abstract We analyze various Indian calendars. We discuss the Indian day count, a generic solar calendar that generalizes various calendars including the mean Indian solar calendar, the true and astronomical Indian solar calendars, a generic lunisolar calendar that generalizes the Indian version, and the true and astronomical Indian lunisolar calendars. We also discuss aspects of the traditional Indian calculation of the time of sunrise and the determination of lunisolar holidays. The months of the Hindus are lunar, their years are solar; therefore their new year's day must in each solar year fall by so much earlier as the lunar year is shorter than the solar.. If this precession makes up one complete month, they act in the same way as the Jews, who make the year a leap year of thirteen months. , and in a similar way to the heathen Arabs. —Alberuni's India. 1 Introduction The world's many calendars are of three primary types: diurnal, solar, and lunar—see our Calendrical Calculations: Millennium Edition [5] (henceforth CCME). All three are represented among the many calendars of the Indian sub- continent. ¡ A diurnal calendar is a day count, either a simple count, like the Julian day number, or a complex, mixed-radix count, like the Mayan long count. The classical Indian day count (ahargana) is used for calendrical purposes. ¡ Solar calendars have a year length that corresponds to the solar year. All modern solar calendars add leap days at regular intervals to adjust the mean length of the calendar year to better approximate the true solar year.

Lord Sri Krishna was born on the 'Rohini' nakshatram (star) on Ashtami day. The festival Sri Krishna Jayanti is also known as Gokulashtami and Janmashtam. The actual day of celebration can be on two different days as the star 'Rohini' and Ashtami may not be on the same day. This occurs between August and September on the Christian calendar. According to mythology, Krishna was the eighth child of Princess Devaki and her husband Vasudeva who belonged to the Yadava clan of Mathura. Devaki's brother Kansa, who was the king of Mathura at that time, killed all children that were given birth by Devaki in order to prevent him from a prediction that said that Kansa would be killed by Devaki's eighth son. When Krishna was born, Vasudeva took baby Krishna to his friend's house in Gokul, a district in Mathura. Thereafter, Krishna was brought up by Nanda and his wife Yashoda at Gokul. According to traditional sources, the Janmashtami is observed on the day when the Ashtami Tithi occurs at midnight.
