  • Calder and Sound
Gryphon Rue Rower-Upjohn Calderand Sound Herbert Matter, Alexander Calder, Tentacles (cf. Works section, fig. 50), 1947 “Noise is another whole dimension.” Alexander Calder 1 A mobile carves its habitat. Alternately seductive, stealthy, ostentatious, it dilates and retracts, eternally redefining space. A noise-mobile produces harmonic wakes – metallic collisions punctuating visual rhythms. 2 For Alexander Calder, silence is not merely the absence of sound – silence gen- erates anticipation, a bedrock feature of musical experience. The cessation of sound suggests the outline of a melody. 3 A new narrative of Calder’s relationship to sound is essential to a rigorous portrayal and a greater comprehension of his genius. In the scope of Calder’s immense œuvre (thousands of sculptures, more than 22,000 documented works in all media), I have identified nearly four dozen intentionally sound-producing mobiles. 4 Calder’s first employment of sound can be traced to the late 1920s with Cirque Calder (1926–31), an event rife with extemporised noises, bells, harmonicas and cymbals. 5 His incorporation of gongs into his sculpture followed, beginning in the early 1930s and continuing through the mid-1970s. Nowadays preservation and monetary value mandate that exhibitions of Calder’s work be in static, controlled environments. Without a histor- ical imagination, it is easy to disregard the sound component as a mere appendage to the striking visual mien of mobiles. As an additional obstacle, our contemporary consciousness is clogged with bric-a-brac associations, such as wind chimes and baby crib bibelots. As if sequestered from this trail of mainstream bastardi- sations, the element of sound in certain works remains ulterior.

  • Pinotfile, Vol 6, Issue 54
PINO: Price is no object PinotFile Volume 6, Issue 54 The First Wine Newsletter Exclusively Devoted to Pinotphiles March 3, 2008 Inside this issue: Santa Maria Valley In a quest to try to satisfy my pinotlust, I traveled recently to the Santa Maria Valley Ambullneo 7 and discovered a region that is quietly, but quickly, becoming a major destination Cottonwood Canyon 10 for wine enthusiasts. Located in the northernmost reaches of Santa Barbara Bianchi Winery 14 County, it is an appellation that has been overshadowed by its neighbors to the Kenneth Volk Vnyds 15 south, the Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Rita Hills, whose popularity has been fueled by the post-Sideways Pinot craze. Part of Sideways was actually filmed on the Small Sips of Santa 16 Foxen Canyon Wine Trail in Santa Maria Valley but this has been largely unrecog- Maria Valley nized. To the north, the nearby Arroyo Grande Valley and Edna Valley in San Luis Obispo County have assumed more notoriety for cool-climate wine enthusiasts, in Pinot Briefs 18 part because of a more publicized and established wine growing history, and in Long & Winding 20 part due to the close proximity to the town of San Luis Obispo. Pinot Road, Part VI The Santa Maria Valley encompasses the cities of Santa Maria and Guadalupe and includes the unincorporated communities of Orcutt, Sisquoc and Tepusquet. The Valley is tucked between the Sierra Madre Mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean coastline to the west. 25% of Santa Barbara County’s population resides here and Santa Maria recently eclipsed its more famous neighbor to the south, Santa Barbara, in population.

  • Winery of the Month
April 2020 WINERY OF THE MONTH ® RealReal Food. Food. Real Real People People..® OLIVER’S IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE SEBASTIANI VINEYARDS & WINERY AS THE WINERY OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL. Sebastiani’s first century in Sonoma winemaking began when Samuele Sebastiani emigrated from Italy in 1895 and started Sebastiani nine years later. A stonemason by trade, he quarry-mined the Sonoma hills for cobblestones that were used to build the streets of San Francisco. The winery was the only one in Sonoma County to continue operations through Prohibition, making a small amount of sacramental and medicinal wines. It has been joked, and perhaps with some grain of truth, that during this time there was a resurgence of people becoming very religious. Samuele believed in hard work and asked the same of everyone at the winery. At the same time, he was a strong supporter of the land and the people of Sonoma. When the combination of Prohibition and the Depression hit hard, Samuele initiated major projects at the winery to create employment for his neighbors. Shortly after Samuele’s death in 1944, his son, August, and August’s wife Sylvia purchased the winery from the estate and began the expansion of the facilities and the product line, adding new varietal wines and proprietary blends. August was recognized as one of America’s most skilled and innovative winemakers of the time. He respected the craftsmen of Sonoma and made use of their skills at the winery; the famous hand-carved Sebastiani barrels, which are still on display at the winery, were completed by Earle Brown in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
