The route between Taunton and Creech St Michael is wheelchair and pushchair friendly. The Great Somerset Walk is for everyone! Toddlers, teens, twenty-somethings and seniors are all welcome. You can even bring your dog! Not only do you get the benefits of fun, fitness and a great day out, every pound you raise will help provide hospice care for thousands of patients and their families in Somerset. The Great Somerset Walk offers you a chance to enjoy the wonderful scenery we are so lucky to have on our doorstep whilst helping raise funds for Somerset’s largest charity. You will receive a free hospice sunflower badge at your start registration point, so you can proudly show your support on the route. You will also be able to learn about the area as you walk with the Great Somerset Walk quiz. Walkers can register on line at http://www.somerset-hospice.org.uk/Fundraising/CharityWalk2012, find a registration leaflet at St Margaret’s shops or by ringing the Fundraising Office on 0845 345 9671. If you would like any further information, St Margaret’s Fundraising Office will be pleased to help. 3 Thank you for your walks in this programme! On 6th June 2012: Please submit your walks for the next programme GENERAL INFORMATION Websites For information about Mendip Ramblers’ activities, news, programmes, our local history, photographs etc. visit www.mendipramblers.co.uk. Follow any directions given by the leader or back marker Banana and orange peel These are not biodegradable in the British climate and are very unsightly when carelessly disposed of. Please take them home. Banana skins can go in the compost heap (reputed to be excellent for roses) or the waste food recycling caddy, while orange peel can be cut into small (3mm) squares and sprinkled on the garden or lawn to discourage cats. • Walters, H B, the Church Bells of Somerset, Part II, Volume 66
Cfje Cfmrcb TBelte of Somerset BY H. B. WALTERS, M.A., F.S.A. IN 1875, now forty-five years ago, the Rev. Canon H. T. Ellacombe of Clyst St. Mary, Devonshire, published a monograph on the Church Bells of Somerset, in continuation of his previous work on those of Devonshire. After a brief intro- duction in which something was said of the inscriptions on the mediaeval bells, and somewhat less of their founders, a list was given of the inscriptions on all (or rather, nearly all) the bells of the Somerset churches, ancient and modern. The indefatigable author had then reached the ripe age of eighty, and the book is a monument of an old man's industry. But for this very reason he was necessarily dependent upon the assistance of correspondents and helpers for all his informa- tion/and although he personally visited every tower but one in Devon (previously to 1867), it is probable that he never actually saw a single bell in Somerset. He tells us in fact, in his preface, how his information was all obtained by diligent posting of letters to incumbents, churchwardens, and even parish clerks. The result of this, however, was that his descriptions of the bells were by no means either as full or as accurate as could have been wished. Many of his correspondents were doubtless inexperienced in reading inscriptions, especially in old lettering, and they were liable to miss ornaments or marks in unusual positions. Thus at Hornblotton and at Lovington mediaeval bells are passed over in silence ;* at other places inscriptions 1.

  • Somerset Geology-A Good Rock Guide
SOMERSET GEOLOGY-A GOOD ROCK GUIDE Hugh Prudden The great unconformity figured by De la Beche WELCOME TO SOMERSET Welcome to green fields, wild flower meadows, farm cider, Cheddar cheese, picturesque villages, wild moorland, peat moors, a spectacular coastline, quiet country lanes…… To which we can add a wealth of geological features. The gorge and caves at Cheddar are well-known. Further east near Frome there are Silurian volcanics, Carboniferous Limestone outcrops, Variscan thrust tectonics, Permo-Triassic conglomerates, sediment-filled fissures, a classic unconformity, Jurassic clays and limestones, Cretaceous Greensand and Chalk topped with Tertiary remnants including sarsen stones-a veritable geological park! Elsewhere in Mendip are reminders of coal and lead mining both in the field and museums. Today the Mendips are a major source of aggregates. The Mesozoic formations curve in an arc through southwest and southeast Somerset creating vales and escarpments that define the landscape and clearly have influenced the patterns of soils, land use and settlement as at Porlock. The church building stones mark the outcrops. Wilder country can be found in the Quantocks, Brendon Hills and Exmoor which are underlain by rocks of Devonian age and within which lie sunken blocks (half-grabens) containing Permo-Triassic sediments. The coastline contains exposures of Devonian sediments and tectonics west of Minehead adjoining the classic exposures of Mesozoic sediments and structural features which extend eastward to the Parrett estuary. The predominance of wave energy from the west and the large tidal range of the Bristol Channel has resulted in rapid cliff erosion and longshore drift to the east where there is a full suite of accretionary landforms: sandy beaches, storm ridges, salt marsh, and sand dunes popular with summer visitors.

  • 1 Introduction
1 Introduction Why are we here? We want to share our emerging plans for South Frome, understand what issues are important to you, and your views on the initial plans for this area. This will help us take local opinions into account as the project progresses. Land Value Alliances (LVA) and a Landowner Consortium are seeking to deliver a mixed-use development to the south of Frome known as Selwood Garden Village (SGV). The first phase will deliver a mixed-use development, including around 1,500 new homes, employment land and a local centre which will include social infrastructure and a local community hub. Who are we? LVA are a market leading business in the strategic land and planning promotion sector. Our portfolio consists of over 60 projects throughout the UK including one of the first Zero Carbon schemes in the region. During the planning process we positively engage with planning authorities, Parish and Town Councils, communities, consultees and developers. We believe in forming co-operative relationships between all the stakeholders. We believe that our approach of creating working ‘alliances’ leads to better development. We engage with the community and their representatives in the planning phase. We work together in producing the right development sites in the right locations and the right form of development. Our aim is to meet and listen to the community and its representatives whether in the planning offices, Parish / Town Councils, neighbourhood planning committees or in open public consultations. We believe in trying to establish and agree the community benefits which flow from suitable sustainable development.
