    Cfje Cfmrcb TBelte of Somerset BY H. B. WALTERS, M.A., F.S.A. IN 1875, now forty-five years ago, the Rev. Canon H. T. Ellacombe of Clyst St. Mary, Devonshire, published a monograph on the Church Bells of Somerset, in continuation of his previous work on those of Devonshire. After a brief intro- duction in which something was said of the inscriptions on the mediaeval bells, and somewhat less of their founders, a list was given of the inscriptions on all (or rather, nearly all) the bells of the Somerset churches, ancient and modern. The indefatigable author had then reached the ripe age of eighty, and the book is a monument of an old man's industry. But for this very reason he was necessarily dependent upon the assistance of correspondents and helpers for all his informa- tion/and although he personally visited every tower but one in Devon (previously to 1867), it is probable that he never actually saw a single bell in Somerset. He tells us in fact, in his preface, how his information was all obtained by diligent posting of letters to incumbents, churchwardens, and even parish clerks. The result of this, however, was that his descriptions of the bells were by no means either as full or as accurate as could have been wished. Many of his correspondents were doubtless inexperienced in reading inscriptions, especially in old lettering, and they were liable to miss ornaments or marks in unusual positions. Thus at Hornblotton and at Lovington mediaeval bells are passed over in silence ;* at other places inscriptions 1.

    FRACKING IN NORTH-EAST SOMERSET HOW MANY WELLS AND WHERE MIGHT THEY BE? The present government is keen to promote an American style unconventional gas revolution in Britain. This could mean big industry moving into our neighbourhood with the attendant disruption, potential risks, and effect on house prices. Parts of Somerset have been licensed for exploration and development. Industry interest has focused primarily on coalbed methane (CBM) with shale gas as a secondary possibility. Fracking may be used for both. Extraction of CBM is likely to be occur much nearer the surface than shale. How many wells & where? In 2000 the American CBM company GeoMet Inc.evaluated the CBM potential of the 400 km2 area shown in Fig. 1 Its report was retrieved from publicly available sources by Frack Free Chew Valley (FFCV) and is available with a detailed commentary. In its 2000 assessment GeoMet decided to concentrate on areas with coal measures at optimum depth , shown in grey in Fig. 1, and to exclude urban areas and areas where the coal had been previously worked. There seems to be no reason why CBM might not be extracted from other coal seams, but it appears that GeoMet first concentrated on the least complicated areas. This "developable" area, 108 km2 , GeoMet stated, could "accommodate" about 300 gas wells. Fig. 1 gives an indication of their location, according to FFCV's assumption of even distribution.

    SOMERSET GEOLOGY-A GOOD ROCK GUIDE Hugh Prudden The great unconformity figured by De la Beche WELCOME TO SOMERSET Welcome to green fields, wild flower meadows, farm cider, Cheddar cheese, picturesque villages, wild moorland, peat moors, a spectacular coastline, quiet country lanes…… To which we can add a wealth of geological features. The gorge and caves at Cheddar are well-known. Further east near Frome there are Silurian volcanics, Carboniferous Limestone outcrops, Variscan thrust tectonics, Permo-Triassic conglomerates, sediment-filled fissures, a classic unconformity, Jurassic clays and limestones, Cretaceous Greensand and Chalk topped with Tertiary remnants including sarsen stones-a veritable geological park! Elsewhere in Mendip are reminders of coal and lead mining both in the field and museums. Today the Mendips are a major source of aggregates. The Mesozoic formations curve in an arc through southwest and southeast Somerset creating vales and escarpments that define the landscape and clearly have influenced the patterns of soils, land use and settlement as at Porlock. The church building stones mark the outcrops. Wilder country can be found in the Quantocks, Brendon Hills and Exmoor which are underlain by rocks of Devonian age and within which lie sunken blocks (half-grabens) containing Permo-Triassic sediments. The coastline contains exposures of Devonian sediments and tectonics west of Minehead adjoining the classic exposures of Mesozoic sediments and structural features which extend eastward to the Parrett estuary. The predominance of wave energy from the west and the large tidal range of the Bristol Channel has resulted in rapid cliff erosion and longshore drift to the east where there is a full suite of accretionary landforms: sandy beaches, storm ridges, salt marsh, and sand dunes popular with summer visitors.

She was of Huguenot descent through her father's side of the family and a member of the Huguenot Society of London for most of her life. Sometime between 1934 and '37, when she was in her mid-twenties, she enjoyed working, along with a number of other volunteers, for the archaeologist Sir Mortimer Wheeler who was excavating the site of the Iron Age Hill Fort at Maiden Castle in Dorset. This was the start of her interest in archaeology and a development of her interest and involvement in local history: something that was to remain with her throughout her life. She joined the Women's Land Army during the Second World War, working on a farm in Buckinghamshire. The hours were long and the work hard but she found it rewarding and made many friends. In 1941, she met the chauffeur of exiled King Zog of Albania who was living nearby. The story goes that she was courted by him, not with flowers but with kippers, which were left for her by the farm gates! These tactics were obviously successful because at the end of the war she and the chauffeur (William Barrington) were married. In the late 1940s, Delia and William went to Holsworthy in Devon where they ran a farm together but after a few years decided that it was not the life for them and they moved to Bristol where William was employed, once again, as a chauffeur until his retirement.

The festival is a marvellous collaboration and a huge thanks to all who contributed: Alan Gray, Banwell Bone Caves Heritage Group (voluntary), Butterfly Conservation, Elizabeth Devon, Earthlearningidea, Mendip Hills AONB, Mendip Society, Chris Richard, North Somerset Council, National Trust, Natural England, National Trust, Maple Leaf Orienteering, Plantlife, Quarry Faces Project, Radstock Museum, Somerset Earth Science Centre, Somerset Wildlife Trust, Wells and District Heritage Museum, and Westbury sub Mendip Quarry. The launch event involved classes from 4 local schools visiting Burrington Combe. 4 organisations kindly agreed to providing workshops – Butterfly Conservation: planting butterfly friendly plants to take home after learning about butterfly attracting limestone flora, Plantlife:lower plants survey on limestone woodland Somerset Earth Science Centre – interactive activity, learning how the rocks and gorge of Burrington were created Somerset Wildlife Trust – limestone grassland sensory activities It was also appreciated the enthusiasm and support shown by David Rowley, geology teacher at Wells Cathedral school who also attended and provided valuable volunteer assistanace from his 6
