Incoming Students General Information on Cyprus Application Procedure Staff Mobility To take part in the Erasmus Exchange Program at the University of Nicosia you have to first contact the International or Erasmus Office Staff Weeks at your Home Institution. This is in order to express your interest and examine if you are eligible for applying for an Erasmus Study Mobility. Events and Activities The University of Nicosia can only accept students under the areas of studies specified in the Bilateral Agreement between the two Announcements Institutions. If there is not a signed Bilateral Agreement then it will not be possible to accept the students. Relevant Links Once the Home Institution approves your application and officially nominates you for a Study Mobility at the University of Nicosia, we can then start the Application Procedure. Students satisfy the English requirements if their first degree was taught in English. Otherwise, they would need to present a minimum TOEFL score of 550 paper-based or 213 computer-based, GCSE “O” Level with minimum “C” or IELTS with a score of 6.5 or a score placement at the ENGL-100 level of the University English Placement Test. The University offers English courses at various levels to help students reach the required standard for admission to a graduate program. Nomination Deadlines Fall Semester: April 30 Spring Semester: October 25 Application Deadlines Fall Semester: May 30 Spring Semester: November 15 Academic Studies In order to choose classes for studying at the University of Nicosia you have to check the Schedule of Classes where you can find the list of offered classes for the upcoming semester. Each student is responsible to: - Ensure that courses selected are compatible with the ones offered at his/her home institution - Grant the approval of your home institution academic supervisor or Erasmus coordinator - Ensure that there is no time clash in the course selected and pre-requisites required Learning Agreement When planning your study schedule at UNic, you should first check the requirements of your Home Institution (and your academic supervisor) and then fill in the Learning Agreement. Please ask your Home University to provide you with the template of the Learning Agreement. The Learning Agreement is a confirmation of the list of the courses of the student and makes the credits-transfer easier. Bachelor Students can only register for Bachelor courses and Master students can only register for Master courses. Note that all courses with a code 300 or 400 (i.e. ACCT-450 Performance Management). Also all courses whose code begins with 5 or 6 (example MIREL-500) are master’s courses. Please be careful in your selection and ensure that your academic supervisor at your home institution agrees with the selected courses. 2. The students can take minimum 15 ECTS and Maximum 30 ECTS 3. Please ignore the UNic credits and consider only the ECTS 4. Ensure you have no timetable clashes in your schedule 5. Take into consideration the Prerequisites of the courses. If you have not done any courses similar to the prerequisite of the courses, then you cannot register in those courses. Changes to the Learning Agreement: Due to the existing internal regulation of the University of Nicosia changes to the Learning Agreement need to be finalized within the first two weeks of classes. Changes will be made ONLY in exceptional cases and where needed for academic purposes (i.e. ineligibility for graduation). The agreement should be updated immediately when changes occur. Please keep in mind that after arriving at UNic you might have to modify the Learning Agreement for specific reasons, such as, cancellations of classes or timetable clashes. The students can fill in the Learning Agreement only when they receive the final Course List for the prospective semester. The signed form should be sent via email to [email protected] Academic Calendar The Academic Calendar serves as an information source and planning document for the students. The calendar includes registration dates, class start day, exam dates, and holidays. UNISKO Program A month before the beginning of the Fall Semester, the University of Nicosia holds the UNISKO Orientation Program for all the new students. The Orientation Program aims at familiarizing students with their new environment, assisting in their integration with new and existing students, improving their English language skills and discovering the island before the beginning of the academic year. Please note that the participation is free of charge and not compulsory. Accommodation The University of Nicosia will provide support in finding accommodation based on the existing partnerships with landlords. Please note that irrespectively whether you will select the proposed accommodation or whether you will find housing on your own, the University of Nicosia is not responsible for the actual reservation, housing conditions, or contracts between the students and landlords. Moreover, Law 109 (I)/2005 [1] on the establishment and operation of private universities provides for the provision, by every private university, of graduate and/or undergraduate education of a high standard that accepts international recognition. A number of recent developments have further enhanced the international dimension in curriculum development. These include the adoption of the three-level qualifications framework and the diploma supplement; offering, under certain preconditions, programmes in foreign languages by public universities; offering trans-university programmes of studies that are related to European programmes, such as the Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses; permitting private universities to offer programmes in Greek and/or a foreign language provided that it is stipulated in the University Charter; and, the decision of the Council of Ministers to introduce a National Qualifications Framework for Cyprus, in line with the QF for the EHEA.     Andreas Demetriou Andreas Demetriou is a Greek Cypriot developmental psychologist and former Minister of Education and Culture of Cyprus. He received a PhD in psychology in 1983. He was a professor of Developmental Psychology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki until 1996. He then moved to the University of Cyprus, where he was a professor of psychology until he became the Minister of Education and Culture. Currently he is professor of psychology and President of the University of Nicosia Research Foundation. He is also President of the Pancyprian Association of Psychologists. Research His research focuses on cognitive development. From the very beginning he attempted to develop a comprehensive theory of cognitive development aiming to integrate the empirically valid aspects of Piaget's theory with psychometric and cognitive theory. That is, the theory aimed to describe and explain intellectual development through the life span, individual differences in the rate and directions of intellectual development, and the cognitive mechanisms underlying development and individual differences. According to this theory, the human mind is organised in three functional levels. The first is the level of processing potentials, which involves information processing mechanisms underlying the ability to attend to, select, represent, and operate on information. The other two levels involve knowing processes, one oriented to the environment and another oriented to the self. The level oriented to the environment includes thought processes and functions that specialise in the representation and processing of information coming from different domains of the environment. Six domains are specified: Categorical, quantitative, causal, spatial, propositional, and social thought. The self-oriented level includes functions and processes oriented to monitoring, representing, and regulating processing potentials and the environment-oriented systems.

    Review of UK transnational education in Cyprus: University of St Mark & St John and University of Nicosia November 2015 Executive summary The University of St Mark & St John (the University), an independent Church of England voluntary college formed from the combination in 1923 of the constituent colleges of St John's in Battersea and St Mark's in Chelsea, was granted taught degree awarding powers in 2007 and university status in 2012. The University offers undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes, with a focus on business, education, social sciences and sport. The University of Nicosia (UNIC) (formerly Intercollege), a private sector higher education institution founded in 1980, offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes from sites in Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca, across a range of disciplines including business, education, humanities, social sciences, sciences, and engineering. Under the partnership UNIC, through UNIC Online, offers three programmes validated by the University: a Master of Business Administration, approved in 2011, a BA (Hons) Business Studies, approved in 2012, and a BA (Hons) Accounting, approved in 2013, all delivered online. There are currently 950 students enrolled on the programmes. The partnership was established under the University's previous strategic plan, which had clear targets to extend its collaborative provision and to increase the number of international partnerships. Since then, following a change in strategic direction focusing on the development of onsite home provision, the University decided to terminate the partnership, considering that UNIC Online, as a private for-profit organisation, no longer provides a good strategic fit with the University. Student enrolment to the programmes ceased in October 2014.
