It is the intention of this series to provide a conven- ient survey of research on British history which has appeared in Ger- many, not least for scholars who do not usually use German-language materials. The abstracts were written by Research Fellows of the GHIL. Some features of this bibliographie raisonné have, however, been adapted to changing circumstances. It will now be published at shorter intervals, to keep pace with the increasing number of publications. It is anticipated that the bibliography will be published at intervals of two to three years in future. While every care has been taken to make this bibliography as com- plete as possible, the shorter interval between the publication of works and the publication of the bibliography has made it more rather than less dependent on the co-operation of authors and publishers, and it is inevitable that items which should have been listed have been over- looked. All we can do to explain shortcomings is to show how it was compiled.
