  • Tunnels, Deeper, Freefall, and Closer by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams
READING GROUP GUIDE Tunnels, Deeper, Freefall, and closer by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams Enter the terrifying world of Tunnels—a subterranean society under the streets of modern London, whose citizens are enslaved by a strange, cruel sect, the Styx, who plan to exterminate all Topsoilers. Can fourteen-year-old Will defeat the Styx, and rescue his missing father? Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams first met at college in London and have remained friends ever since. Gordon, a former investment banker, now lives with his wife and children in Norfolk, England; Williams, an installation artist, inhabits the city’s Hackney neighborhood, accompanied everywhere by his invisible dog. About their writing process, Gordon says: “When I lived in London, my house was only a ten-minute bike ride from where Brian lived, so he’d cycle round and we would work on Tunnels at my kitchen table. When I moved with my family to the country, we discussed Deeper over many late-night phone calls, and swapped sections by email. When I visit London we go to a couple of favorite cafés. They’ve gotten used to us and know that we can make a cup of coffee last several hours!” Tunnels A New York Times Bestseller About the book He’s a loner at school, his sister’s beyond bossy, and his mother watches TV all day long, but at least Will Burrows shares one hobby with his otherwise weird father: They’re both obsessed with archeological sites. When the two discover an abandoned tunnel buried below modern London, they think they’re on the brink of a major find.

  • Ten Views of a Landslip
Ten Views of a Landslip A personal appreciation and analysis of the Great Bindon Landslip in its historical and scientific context Peter Lincoln © Peter Lincoln & Lyme Regis Museum Detail from: View of the Axmouth Landslip from Dowlands – Plate V of Ten Plates etc., Mary Buckland, 30 December 1839 (LRM) Prologue The Land-slip has now become an object of so much curiosity and interest, not only to the idle tourist, but also to the philosopher and geologist, that some description of it in a compact and collected form, appears desirable and indeed absolutely necessary. P.O.H. Sidmouthiensis A Guide to the Landslip Near Axmouth Devonshire1 Coincidence has a powerful effect on the human imagination. Explanations based on the incontrovertible laws of probability are often less appealing than those invoking the occult or a vague feeling that ‘it was meant to be’. From the time of the Ancient Greeks the enterprise we now call ‘Western science’ has worked to establish rational causes for seemingly inexplicable natural events. But old habits die hard, and throughout history catastrophic events have been interpreted as punishments for sin or portents of a greater reckoning to come. The 1839 Christmas landslip or ‘earthquake’ at Bindon a few miles to the west of Lyme Regis on the South Devon coast, was no exception. It was a time of great change and uncertainty, a time of political reform. Cholera and insurrection were in the air, and now God was speaking. For many it could be no coincidence. This account of the event and the people connected to it is inspired by two more mundane coincidences occurring over a century apart.

  • A Handy Guide to Help You Pick Which Author/Series to Try Next
A handy guide to help you pick which author/series to try next. 1 The purpose of this leaflet is to help you pick what you would like to read next. It is often a problem if you have read all of the books by your favourite author, or just finished a good series, you can be unsure of what to pick up next. This leaflet has been created from Miss Lang’s knowledge and has had a lot of input from the invaluable book ‘Who Next—A Guide To Children’s Authors’ (available to look at as a reference item in the School Library) and using the website www.fantasticfiction.co.uk. This leaflet is intended to be a thorough guide to assist you in using the School Library so it is aimed at boys of secondary school age. It is not an exhaustive list but hopefully a useful tool and a pointer in the right direction. Some authors are recommended but do not have a dedicated page—this is due to the School Library only holding a few titles. Only authors stocked by the School Library are recommended. 2 Authors are listed alphabetically from the first page with other ideas on how to choose, as well as information on the Carnegie Shadowing Scheme at the back. If you like an author and want to read their books in order there is no better resource than www.fantasticfiction.co.uk which lists authors’ work within series and in order rather than retail websites such as Amazon which often list by publication date—which the publishing of hardbacks and paperbacks can throw 3 Douglas Adams 1952-2001 Most famous for: ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ series Writes: Fantasy Want to try some of Douglas Adams work? The order of the Hitchhikers Guide series: 1.
