  • Meet Me in the Land of Hope and Dreams Influences of the Protest Song Tradition on the Recent Work of Bruce Springsteen (1995-2012)
Ghent University Faculty of Arts and Philosophy Meet me in the Land of Hope and Dreams Influences of the protest song tradition on the recent work of Bruce Springsteen (1995-2012) Supervisor: Paper submitted in partial Dr. Debora Van Durme fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of “Master in de Taal- en Letterkunde: Nederlands- Engels” by Michiel Vaernewyck May 2014 Word of thanks The completion of this master dissertation would not have been possible without the help of several people that have accompanied me on this road. First of all, thank you to my loving parents for their support throughout the years. While my father encouraged me to listen to an obscure, dusty vinyl record called The River, he as well as my mother taught me the love for literature and music. Thanks for encouraging me to express myself through writing and my own music, which is a gift that money just cannot buy. Secondly, thanks to my great friends of the past few years at Ghent University, although they frequently – but not unfairly – questioned my profound passion for Bruce Springsteen. Also, thank you to my supervisor dr. Debora Van Durme who provided detailed and useful feedback to this dissertation and who had the faith to endorse this thesis topic. I hope faith will be rewarded. Last but not least, I want to thank everyone who proofread sections of this paper and I hope that they will also be inspired by what words and music can do. As always, much love to Helena, number one Croatian Bruce fan. Thanks to Phantom Dan and the Big Man, for inspiring me over and over again.

The Banks of Ohio 3:32 Chorus: I asked my love to take a walk, I took her by her lily-white hand, Just to walk a little way, I led her down where the waters stand. And as we walked and as we talked I picked her up and pitched her in, Of our golden wedding day. And watched her as she floated down. Chorus: Chorus: Then only say that you'll be mine, In no other arms you'll find. I started back home twixt twelve and one, Down beside where the waters flow, Crying, "My God! What have I done - On the banks of the Ohio. I've murdered the only woman I love Because she would not be my bride." I drew a sword across her breast, Gently in my arms she pressed, Chorus: Crying, "Willie, Oh Willie, don't you murder me, For I'm unprepared for eternity!" www.folkways.si.edu 2. You are My Sunshine 1:46 Chorus: J. H. Davis-C. Mitchell Oh, springtime has come You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, We're just out of jail, You make me happy when skies are gray. Without any money, You'll never know, dear, how much I love you, Without any bail. Please don't take my sunshine away. Chorus: The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping, I dreamt I held you in my arms. 4. The Foggy Dew 1:59 When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken, And I hung my head and cried.

    60) Murder Incorporated So the comfort that you keep's a gold-plated, snub-nosed .32 Not quite sure why this doesn’t get more plays. It is a real belter, pumps you up, would be a great show opener. Would have been right at home on Darkness. Has you rocking from go to woe. Bruce leaves nobody behind on this and you’re taken on a six minute power ride, and there is no time for stopping. This was initially recorded back in 1982 with the Born In The USA sessions, but did not see an official release until the release of greatest hits in 1995. From the get go it sounds like classic Springsteen. The thud of Max’s drums, followed with the intro of the guitars. The organs feature prominently too. And for the next six minutes, you feel compelled to tap your foot to the beat and fill with anger, because let’s face it, this song doesn’t exactly put a smile on your face. That’s not to say songs need to have a happy vibe about them to enjoy them. The sax solo feels like it’s just been shoved in for the sake of it. But somehow Bruce managed to make it work. Nils’ wows us with a blistering solo before the bridge and we are treated to one final verse and raspy Bruce belts out a “I could tell you were just frustrated livin with Murder Incoporated.” Bruce struts his stuff and nearly sets his guitar on fire, Stevie throws a punch back (much like the Saint duel at Hammersmith), but Bruce shows why he’s Boss.

APPROACHING POPULAR MUSIC IN THE FIELD OF ENGLISH: CRITICAL BOUNDARIES, REMEDIATION, AND PERFORMANCE THEORY A Thesis Presented to The Faculty of Western Washington University In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts by Christopher Reid Kerr May 2008 iv Abstract In light of current disciplinary shifts toward digital media and multi-modal textual analysis, this thesis explores how the field of English can take up popular music for scholarly study. Through a blend of text and context, the first chapter maps a methodology to discuss central zones of analysis which include audience, author, composition, media, and cultural context – fluid zones of analysis which hold textual relationships. The second chapter isolates two forms of media, the audio recording and live performance, to discuss specific features of authorship, authenticity, audience rituals, and remediation. As an application of the theory, chapter three explores the artistic craft of popular musician Bruce Springsteen to survey his literary voice which enacts strong bonds between artist, text, and audience.

  • 1 Prepared Remarks of Chairman Julius Genachowski Federal Communications Commission Future of Music Coalition Policy Summit Wash
Prepared Remarks of Chairman Julius Genachowski Federal Communications Commission Future of Music Coalition Policy Summit Washington, D.C. October 5, 2009 I’d like to thank Jean Cook and Michael Bracy with the Future of Music Coalition for the invitation and for the stellar work they do for musicians through this organization. I hope no one expects me to sing my remarks, or whip out a harmonica like former Commissioner Adelstein. Though I can’t sing, and my guitar-playing days are behind me, I do want to discuss something that’s been described to me as “music to the ears” of many artists and independent, creative people across the country -- and that’s the preservation of the free and open Internet. Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, invoked an artistic metaphor when describing the essential openness of the Web. He called it “a blank canvas,” where anyone could paint their ideas and pursue their inspiration, without obtaining prior permission from anybody else to do so. I believe we must keep the Internet open for the creativity and innovation that is just around the corner -- for the inventors, writers, and artists in basements, dorm rooms, and garages. Music really does bring out the creativity in people. I’d like to share with you a riff on Net Neutrality developed by one of my staff members, a big Bruce Springsteen fan as you’ll see. He wasn’t sure where exactly The Boss stands on Net Neutrality, but believes that everywhere from the Streets of Philadelphia to My Hometown in New York, every Bobby Jean and every Jersey Girl should be counting on the Internet remaining free and open, not Counting on a Miracle.
