TRANSCRIPT ‘SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE’ AND PRESIDENTIAL POLITICS PANEL DISCUSSION Saturday Night Live has provided an irreverent yet influential perspective on American presidential politics since its debut season in 1975. Two days after kicking off its fall 2008 season with a sketch portraying Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton, SNL was the subject of a panel discussion with series creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels, selected by Time Magazine as one of the world’s 100 most influential people; cast members and Weekend Update co-anchors Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers; and veteran SNL writer James Downey. The program celebrated the launch of the 2008 edition of the Museum’s website, The Living Room Candidate (www.livingroomcandidate.org), an archive of American presidential campaign commercials. Panel discussion with James Downey, Lorne but Lorne created the show, and it had certain Michaels, Seth Meyers, and Amy Poehler, characteristics. It had brilliant writing, the casting moderated by Chief Curator David Schwartz was outstanding, and most important, Lorne was (September 15, 2008): not afraid. He was willing to test the limits of what the executives would permit, and test the ROCHELLE SLOVIN: Now, to introduce Lorne audience, as well. He was willing to put pins into Michaels: Herb Schlosser, Chairman of the Board balloons, say outrageous things, and he created of Trustees of the Museum of the Moving Image. something new. While Herb was president of NBC, he put Saturday Night Live on the air, so there’s no one Lorne got the respect of the audience—we had more fitting as an introducer tonight.

The Case of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (TDS) by ELENA-DANIELA (DANA) NEACSU Dissertation Director: John V. Pavlik, Ph.D. For the last decade, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (TDS ), a (Comedy Central) cable comedy show, has been increasingly seen as an informative, new, even revolutionary, form of journalism. A substantial body of literature appeared, adopting this view. On closer inspection, it became clear that this view was tenable only in specific circumstances. It assumed that the comedic structure of the show, TDS ’ primary text, promoted cognitive polysemy, a textual ambiguity which encouraged critical inquiry, and that TDS ’ audiences perceived it accordingly. As a result I analyzed, through a dual - encoding/decoding - analytical approach, whether TDS ’ comedic discourse educates and informs its audiences in a ii manner which encourages independent or critical reading of the news. Through a multilayered textual analysis of the primary and tertiary texts of the show, the research presented here asked, “How does TDS ’ comedic narrative (primary text) work as a vehicle of televised political news?” and “How does TDS ’ audience decode its text?” The research identified flaws in the existing literature and the limits inherent to any similar endeavors.

  • Norm Macdonald
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NOVEMBER 21, 2008 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT PRESENTS NORM MACDONALD LIVE AT THE RIVER ROCK SHOW THEATRE SATURDAY, JANUARY 17 Perhaps best known for his offbeat delivery of “the fake news” on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” for five seasons, Norm Macdonald is a major comedic presence. The Quebec City-born actor and comedian began performing in comedy clubs across Canada in the mid-80’s. He eventually moved to Los Angeles where he became a writer for “The Dennis Miller Show” and later for the ABC sitcom, “Roseanne.” It was in 1993 when Macdonald joined the cast of NBC's "Saturday Night Live" after being discovered by producer Lorne Michaels during one of his stand-up routines. Once cast on the show, he ended up doing impressions of Bob Dole, Larry King, Charles Kuralt, David Letterman and Burt Reynolds. His most notable position on SNL however was his three-year stint as anchor of Weekend Update beginning each of his newscasts with his trademark line, “And now the fake news.” After leaving SNL in 1998, he starred in his own sitcom, “The Norm Show” which ran for three seasons on ABC followed by his second sitcom, “A Minute with Stan Hooper” which aired on FOX in 2003. In addition, he has done several motion pictures including Billy Madison (1995), Milos Forman’s Academy Award- nominated The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996) and Dirty Work (1998). His voiceover work includes the role of “Lucky” in Eddie Murphy’s Doctor Dolittle films and the character of “Death” on FOX’s “Family Guy.” His sketch comedy album, Ridiculous was released by Comedy Central Records in 2006.

This thesis examines if and how the Internet viewers of Saturday Night Live skits were influenced by the video skits. The viewers’ online comments were read, categorized and analyzed for content to explore and discuss how the viewers “read” the text of the online video skits. Each video in which candidates John McCain, Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama appeared is summarized and analyzed through viewers’ comments. A sample of skits including actors’ portrayals of McCain, Palin, Clinton, Obama and Joe Biden is also summarized and analyzed to find and discuss how the viewers’ perceptions were influenced by the portrayals. 20 FUN FACTS ABOUT THE LEGENDARY PAUL SHAFFER, BANDLEADER OF THE WORLD'S MOST DANGEROUS BAND While most people know Paul Shaffer as a musical director and David Letterman's sidekick, there is much more to this multi-talented musician... Before Letterman * Shaffer began playing piano at age six in his hometown of Fort William / Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. * Shaffer got his first big break in 1972 when composer Stephen Schwartz hired him as musical director for the Toronto production of "Godspell." The cast included the then unknown Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Victor Garber, and the late great Gilda Radner. * In 1975, another Canadian, Lorne Michaels, came to New York and hired Shaffer to play piano in the band and compose special musical material for the original cast of "Saturday Night Live." In SNL's fifth season, Shaffer also became a featured performer. Man Behind the Music * Shaffer wrote (with Paul Jabara) the 1980s' #1 dance hit "It's Raining Men” performed by the Weather Girls and later by Geri Halliwell for the Bridget Jones's Diary soundtrack, topping the British pop charts in 2001. * Shaffer composed the "Late Show" theme song. * In 2002, Shaffer received his first Grammy®, Best Country Instrumental, for the Earl Scruggs and Friends album, Foggy Mountain Breakdown. * Shaffer was awarded a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame and, in 2008, he received the Order of Canada, Canada’s highest civilian honor. * Shaffer's own albums include: Coast to Coast (1989), The World's Most Dangerous Party (1993), and his latest -- Paul Shaffer & The World's Most Dangerous Band (2017), featuring vocalists such as Bill Murray, Darius Rucker, Jenny Lewis, Dion, Shaggy, and the incomparable Valerie Simpson.

Tina Fey Acceptance Mark Twain Prize 2010 TINA FEY: Thank you. Wow. Thank you very much. Thank you so much. Thank you all for dressing up. God. Listening to all of these speeches and performances for the last two hours, I cannot help but feel grateful that I put a bag of pretzels in my purse. I want to thank everyone involved with the Kennedy Center, or, as it will soon be known, the Tea Party Bowling Alley and Rifle Range – you can get about nine lanes in here. I want to thank everyone at WETA and PBS not just for televising this event, but for showing “The Benny Hill Show” so much when I was a kid. I don’t know how that qualified to be on PBS. We may never know. I – I promise to put this award in a place of honor, to make sure that my daughter does not pretend it is Barbie's older husband – who lost his body in an accident. I never dreamed that I would receive the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Mostly, because my style is so typically Austrian. I never thought I would even qualify for the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. I mean, maybe the “Nathaniel Hawthorne Prize for Judgmental Nature” or, the “Judy Blume Award for Awkward Puberty,” or, the “Harper Lee Prize for Small Bodies of Work.” But never this. And, yet, I hope that, like Mark Twain, a hundred years from now, people will see my work and 2 think, “Wow! That is actually pretty racist.” Apparently, I’m only the third woman ever to receive this award, and I’m so honored to – to – to be numbered with Lilly Tomlin and Whoopi Goldberg, but I do hope that women are achieving at a rate these days that we can stop counting what number they are things.

return to updates Saturday Night “Jive” by “Kevin” Since its inception in 1975, “SNL” has launched the careers of many of the brightest comedy performers of their generation. As the New York Times noted on the occasion of the show’s Emmy-winning 25th anniversary special in 1999, “in defiance of both time and show business convention, ‘SNL’ is still the most pervasive influence on the art of comedy in contemporary culture” This paper is an attempt to discover the players behind this “pervasive influence”. This is an opinion piece compiled with information readily available from an array of internet sources. In the beginning, there was… (wikipedia) In 1974, NBC Tonight Show host Johnny Carson requested that the weekend broadcasts of “Best of Carson” come to an end. To fill in the gap, the network brought in Dick Ebersol – a protege of legendary ABC Sports president Roone Arledge – to develop a 90-minute late-night variety show. Ebersol’s first order of business was hiring a young Canadian producer named Lorne Michaels. There’s the starting gun. Let the search for red flags begin. (wikipedia) Duncan “Dick” Ebersol (born July 28, 1947) was born in Torrington, Connecticut. The son of Mary (nee) Duncan and Charles Roberts Ebersol, a former chairman of the American Cancer Society. He and Josiah Bunting III are half-brothers. In 1975, Ebersol and Lorne Michaels conceived of and developed Saturday Night Live. Named as Vice President of Late Night Programming at age 28...
