  • Gillian Armstrong Gillian Armstong Came to Prominence in the 1970S
Gillian Armstrong Gillian Armstong came to prominence in the 1970s as an outstanding young Australian film director, who has gone on to achieve sustained international success. Alongside filmmakers like Bruce Beresford, John Duigan, Phil Noyce, Fred Schepisi and Peter Weir, her early work was supported by a new national film industry, giving expression to an individual creative vision and an Australian content. Gillian Armstrong’s father was an amateur photographer, and as she grew up, she had her own camera and interest in photography. She studied a Diploma of Art (Film and Television) at Swinburne Technical College, graduating in 1971, Originally enrolled in costume design, she started attending the film course and became entranced with the medium and with the work the students were doing ... turning more and more to still photography and then to film’ (Stratton 1980, p.213). It was the first course in film and television in Australia, initially offered by Swinburne Art School within the Department of Graphic Design. Armstrong ‘experienced great stimulus from the art side of the course — for her the philosophy of film as a means of expression and vision came from the first two years of the course in art and graphic design’ (Paterson 1996, p.46). She graduated with the experimental film The Roof Needs Mowing , 1970. Brian Robinson, first head of the Swinburne Film School, was significant in the development and operation of this innovative course, and the creative learning experience of the small student intake. Regarding them as artists being trained in the technical skills of filmmaking, he thought they should all ‘aim at being producers and directors’ (Paterson 1996, p.

For more than a year now, Khleifi and Sivan have dedicated themselves to producing what they consider a cinematic act of faith: a film co-directed by a Palestinian and by an Israeli. In the summer of 2002, for two long months, they travelled together from the south to the north of their country of birth, traced their trajectory on a map and called it Route 181. This virtual line follows the borders outlined in Resolution 181, which was adopted by the United Nations on November 29th 1947 to partition Palestine into two states. As they travel along this route, they meet women and men, Israeli and Palestinian, young and old, civilians and soldiers, filming them in their everyday lives. Each of these characters has their own way of evoking the frontiers that separate them from their neighbours: concrete, barbed-wire, cynicism, humour, indifference, suspicion, aggression…Frontiers have been built on the hills and in the plains, on mountains and in valleys but above all inside the minds and souls of these two peoples and in the collective unconscious of both societies.

  • Introduction
INTRODUCTION The wuxia film is the oldest genre in the Chinese cinema that has remained popular to the present day. Yet despite its longevity, its history has barely been told until fairly recently, as if there was some force denying that it ever existed. Indeed, the genre was as good as non-existent in China, its country of birth, for some fifty years, being proscribed over that time, while in Hong Kong, where it flowered, it was gen- erally derided by critics and largely neglected by film historians. In recent years, it has garnered a following not only among fans but serious scholars. David Bordwell, Zhang Zhen, David Desser and Leon Hunt have treated the wuxia film with the crit- ical respect that it deserves, addressing it in the contexts of larger studies of Hong Kong cinema (Bordwell), the Chinese cinema (Zhang), or the generic martial arts action film and the genre known as kung fu (Desser and Hunt).1 In China, Chen Mo and Jia Leilei have published specific histories, their books sharing the same title, ‘A History of the Chinese Wuxia Film’ , both issued in 2005.2 This book also offers a specific history of the wuxia film, the first in the English language to do so. It covers the evolution and expansion of the genre from its beginnings in the early Chinese cinema based in Shanghai to its transposition to the film industries in Hong Kong and Taiwan and its eventual shift back to the Mainland in its present phase of development. Subject and Terminology Before beginning this history, it is necessary first to settle the question ofterminology , in the process of which, the characteristics of the genre will also be outlined.
