    Let Her Finish: Gender, Sexism, and Deliberative Participation In Australian Senate Estimates Hearings (2006-2015) Joanna Richards School of Government and Policy Faculty of Business, Government and Law University of Canberra ABSTRACT In 2016, Australia ranks 54th in the world for representation of women in Parliament, with women ​ accounting for only 29% of the House of Representatives, and 39% of the Senate. This inevitably ​ inspires discussion about women in parliament, quotas, and leadership styles. Given the wealth of research which suggests that equal representation does not necessarily guarantee equal treatment, this study focuses on Authoritative representation. That is, the space in between winning a seat and making a difference where components of communication and interaction affect the authority of a speaker.This study combines a Discourse Analysis of the official Hansard transcripts from the Senate Estimates Committee hearings, selected over a 10 year period between 2006 and 2015, with a linguistic ethnography of the Australian Senate to complement results with context. Results show that although female senators and witnesses are certainly in the room, they do not have the same capacity as their male counterparts. Both the access and effectiveness of women in the Senate is limited; not only are they given proportionally less time to speak, but interruption, gate keeping tactics, and the designation of questions significantly different in nature to those directed at men all work to limit female participation in the political domain. As witnesses, empirical measures showed that female testimony was often undermined by senators. Results also showed that female senators and witnesses occasionally adopted masculine styles of communication in an attempt to increase effectiveness in the Senate.

I have zero interest in politics, however, here in Tasmania the opposition Labor party have shown massive interest in this cause for legalisation.

    Transgender outrage Branch slams Colbeck over vote ROBERT INGLIS ONE of the biggest Liberal Party branches in southern Tasmania has delivered a stinging rebuke of the state’s most senior federal Liberal MP, saying its members are in “sheer disbelief” that he refused to back a controversial Senate motion condemning medical treatment for transgender children. The Tasmanian Liberals’ Howrah branch, which has about 40 paying members, met on Thursday to discuss its concern over Aged Care Services Minister and Tasmanian Liberal Senator Richard Colbeck’s decision to vote against a motion put by One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts, which sought to condemn the use of “experimental and unproven” medical treatment on children experiencing gender dysphoria. The motion, which was ultimately defeated 35-23, called for a “wait-and- see” approach to the issue, claiming that “70-90 per cent of young people’s gender dysphoria resolves itself by puberty”. Tasmanian Senator Richard Colbeck Senator Colbeck was the only Tasmanian Liberal Senator who did not support the motion, with senators Eric Abetz, Claire Chandler, Jonathon Duniam and Wendy Askew all backing it. In a letter addressed to the five senators, obtained by the Mercury, the Howrah branch blasts Senator Colbeck and praises Senator Chandler for standing against the participation of transgender people in women’s sport. “At a meeting of the Howrah Branch held earlier today, I was requested by branch members to write to you to express … our sheer disbelief and serious objection to the recent conduct of Tasmanian Liberal Senator and Federal Minister for Sport, Senator Richard Colbeck, for aligning himself with Labor and the Greens to vote against the sensible ‘wait and see’ motion proposed in the senate on the 15th of June 2021,” branch president and Clarence councillor Brendan Blomeley writes.

Dr Kathie Muir Senior Lecturer, Gender, Work and Social Inquiry, School of Social Science, University of Adelaide Email: [email protected] Abstract The ACTU’s ‘Your rights at work’ campaign has broken new ground in employing SkyChannel and television advertising to deliver a unified and slick message about the dangers of the government’s WorkChoices legislation. President Sharan Burrow applauded ‘courageous working Australians’ prepared to stand up for their rights, families and communities by fighting to preserve national values of fairness, decency and a fair-go in the face of an ‘unprecedented attack’ on the rights of ordinary working people by the Howard government. The campaign therefore relied upon romanticised visions of nationalism as fairness, decency and people caring for each other, which Secretary Combet argued ‘beat as strongly in the hearts of [contemporary] Australians as they have for generations’. The appeal of this vision of fairness was (and is) essential to their on-going campaign to defeat the legislation and the coalition at the next federal election. Similarly, the government has sought to delegitimise the union campaign as undemocratic, bad for the economy, and out of date with current workplace realities; in other words, ‘unAustralian’. This paper examines the competing ways nationalism, fairness and choice have been deployed within both the government’s promotion of WorkChoices legislation and in the ACTU’s campaign to overturn the legislation.
