When both parent breeds have diseases in common, those diseases have a greater risk of being passed down to the Labradoodle puppy. Poodles are also somewhat prone to obesity, and the same care must be taken with this breed as with Labradors. Diet and exercise must be adequate to the challenges of an aging dog. All available testing for common Poodle health problems should be carried out on the Poodle parent. To see what tests are suggested, visit the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. To learn more about the diseases and health conditions that commonly affect Poodles of all sizes, refer to our article on Standard Poodles. Any health problems that a Labradoodle could inherit from both parents poses a greater risk to the mix puppy. Hip and elbow dysplasia and PRA are definite concerns. A study published in showed that Labradoodles in the UK at least had a higher prevalence of Multifocal Retinal Dysplasia than Labradors. A thorough eye exam of parents before breeding is therefore essential. And both the Labrador and the Poodle parent of your puppy should have good hip and elbow scores. Both Labs and Poodles have a tendency to become overweight pretty easily. Ensure that you feed a healthy diet and give your Doodle plenty of exercise in order to keep him fit. Obesity does not lend itself to good hip and joint health! There are benefits to a wider gene pool, but you cannot assume your Labradoodle puppy will be healthier than a Labrador or a Poodle, just because he is a cross breed. You still need to make sure that his parents have been tested for conditions known to afflict the parents. In theory, you might expect a mixed breed dog to have a similar life expectancy to one or both of its parent breeds. But several studies have shown that mixed breed dogs have a greater life expectancy than most pure breeds. So it is possible that your Doodle will live longer than either of their parents. Labs have a life expectancy of 12 years. And Poodles have a life expectancy of years, with smaller Poodles outliving larger ones. Are Labradoodles hypoallergenic, or non-shedding? But based on the information regarding the difference in hair coat between various generations of Doodles, this definitely is not the case. The allergen to which some people are sensitive can be found in every home where there is a dog. This is true regardless of breed. You can read more about the facts and myths regarding non-shedding dogs in this article about hypoallergenic dogs. Just know that your particular allergies can still be triggered by a dog that seems to be hypoallergenic for someone else. Most of the time, a good brush once or twice a week should keep their coats in great shape. Second and later generations of Labradoodles will need daily brushing if their curls are kept longer. Sometimes, the Labradoodle coat can be a problem for owners that lack the time or inclination for thorough grooming. Just as with Poodles, lack of grooming can occasionally become a health issue, with matted fur getting out of hand and covering the dogs eyes and bottom. This can escalate as the owner becomes embarrassed to seek help. Labradoodles are highly energetic breeds that do best in an equally energetic and interactive home. A fenced in yard would be perfect for one of these guys. However, Labradoodles are very family friendly, and tend to make very good pets for families with children, as kids also have lots of energy. They do tend to be a little bit larger dogs, though, as well as rambunctious. Are you interested in checking out some other breeds that have a lot in common with the Labradoodle? We have some possibilities for you. To start off, have you heard of an Australian Labradoodle? The cross is very similar, just a few generations on. An Australian Labradoodle is a term often used for dogs that are bred Labradoodle to Labradoodle. This is effectively attempt to create a new breed. Australian Labradoodles also have some Spaniel influences in their blood. What about a mini Labradoodle? This mixed breed dog is the result of a Labrador crossed with a Miniature Poodle. For more information on how Goldendoodles and Labradoodles compare, check out this article. This means that while you may not get a puppy, you will get a lovely mature dog who is ready for a new life spent relaxing with you and your family! Adult Labradoodle adoption can be a very rewarding choice for both you and the dog you bring home. You might also be able to find a Labradoodle in your local shelters, but this is less than likely. Dogs are most often dropped off at shelters due to behavioral problems. Due to their popularity, general good health, and pleasant, trainable temperament, Labradoodles are not often put in that position. Many Labrador and Poodle breed specific rescues with have Labradoodles in from time to time. And you can also find Doodle rescues on Facebook. Have you come across other Labradoodle rescues? Leave us a comment and let us know, and we can add them to the list! To find the right breeder however, you do need to dig a little. You can use the puppy search procedure set out on The Happy Puppy Site to avoid potential problems and to help you find the best pup for your family. You can also make use of the Labradoodle Clubs and Associations that have now been formed in various parts of the world. People that care about their dogs and want to see breeders meet good standards create these clubs. Most of these clubs have a set of rules or breeders guidelines which include health checks. It is vital when buying any puppy that you find a responsible breeder. And it is true that when a new hybrid breed first becomes popular, there are often unscrupulous breeders who jump on the bandwagon. Unscrupulous breeders are only interested in money. This has potentially grave consequences to dog welfare. Fortunately, with the growing popularity of Labradoodles, and the growing public awareness of the need for health checks when buying puppies, there is now a corresponding increase in responsible Labradoodle breeders. There are breeders with several decades of experience who are actively health testing their breeding stock and raising their puppies with care. Make sure to get proof of health tests for the parent dogs. There are 3 different coat types associated with this breed:. The Labradoodle can come is a palette of beautiful colors, such as gold, apricot, caramel, white, black, red, chocolate, blue and parti-color. Depending on whether the Poodle parent is Standard, Miniature or Toy can affect whether the Labradoodle will be one of the following size variations:. No responsible breeder will guarantee that their Labradoodle puppies will definitely grow to be an exact size. Labradoodle or Goldendoodle? You can learn more about the Australian Labradoodle here. This Poodle and Schnauzer mix hangs with the small-sized dogs, reaching 15 lbs 7 kg in weight. It makes a great companion or service dog. Learn more about the Schnoodle here. Though not aggressive, Labradoodle temperament can vary. Agility, quick thinking skills and a lustrous coat of hypoallergenic curls have made it an outstanding show dog, as well as a favored breed by those who suffer from allergies. Labrador Retrievers are highly popular in North America and the UK, especially for their use as service dogs for the disabled. Highly intelligent and sharp as a whip, this breed is in-tune with feelings and actions, learning quickly, displaying loyalty and taking on the role of caretaker. As a Retriever breed, the Labrador has a reputation for being a phenomenal hunter and water dog. They love to swim! This is a big dog, weighing in at up to 80 lbs 29—36 kg. Its coat is short, dense and water resistant. It can come in three colors: black, yellow and chocolate. With all those sporty Labrador genes and intelligent Poodle genes, the Labradoodle is not one to sit idle! Watch those leather loafers! Because of their size and energetic personality, plenty of space is recommended for a Labradoodle to blow of steam. That means small apartments and long hours in a crate do not benefit this stimulated hybrid. Take your Labbidoo out for a jog or let her splash in your swimming pool if you have one. The differences between a multi-generational Australian Labradoodle and other Labradoodles. The term Labradoodle has become quite confusing since we began breeding these dogs in Most of the breeders were breeding true Australian Labradoodles. Since that time we have watched our amazing and magical breed of dogs become a world wide phenomenon with Labradoodles taking over everywhere. From being in the movies to being the number one choice for commercials, print ads and funniest video stars, Labradoodles are everywhere. With this profound movement of the love of all things Labradoodle, the purity and purpose of what Labradoodles were originally bred for has become convoluted with many types of doodles. The Labradoodle breed itself is becoming a confusing mixture of levels of breeds, types of infusions into the bloodlines, etc. Australian Labradoodles are produced when multiple generations of the original Australian bloodlines, Rutland Manor and Teagan Park are bred together.

© www.rubytuesdaybooks.com/scienceKS2 Crossbreeding Dogs Over thousands of years, humans have created and bred hundreds of different dog breeds for hunting, protection and companionship. Each breed has physical features, mental abilities and a personality suited to its job. Some dogs are cross-bred to have desirable features from both parents. • Doodle Generations Explained
General Description-#1 handout As with most hybrids, no one description will adequately describe all the possible varieties seen in these dogs. Generally speaking, Golden/Labra Doodles can have the coat of either parent (Poodle or Golden Retriever/ Labrador Retreiver) or a combination of the two. Colors include apricot, black, brindle, chocolate, cream, gold, merle, phantom, red and silver. Coats can be straight, wavy, or loosely curled. All three types are soft to the touch. Shedding varies by the particular crossbreed but is usually minimal. My pups are in the warm color range-creme to apricots to reds. Understanding the different genetic crosses available may help you find the right Golden/Labra Doodle for your family. F1: First Generation Hybrid This puppy is the product of a Golden/Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. The resulting litter is likely to exhibit what is referred to as hybrid vigor: a level of good health and hardiness that exceeds that of either parent breed. Each puppy in a litter will be half Golden Retriever/Labrador, half Poodle, but they may look nothing like one another. F1b: Backcross (75% poodle) This puppy will be produced by taking a hybrid puppy (from an F1 breeding) and crossing it back with one of the origin breeds. My puppies are a hybrid crossed with a poodle, to enhance the non-shedding and low-dander traits. In proportional terms, you can view this pup as being three quarters Poodle, one quarter Golden or Labrador Retriever.F2: Second Generation Multi-Gen- These dogs are created by breeding two Doodles; results here are somewhat random, as more traits evince in each litter.

Introduction: Purebred dogs of many breeds and even mixed breed dogs are prone to specific abnormalities which may be familial or genetic in nature. Often, these health problems are unapparent to the average person and can only be detected with veterinary medical screening. This booklet is intended to provide information about the potential health problems associated with various purebred dogs. Directory Section I A list of 182 more commonly known purebred dog breeds, each of which is accompanied by a number or series of numbers that correspond to the congenital and heritable diseases identified and described in Section II. Section II An alphabetical listing of congenital and genetically transmitted diseases that occur in purebred dogs. Each disease is assigned an identification number, and some diseases are followed by the names of the breeds known to be subject to those diseases. How to use this book: Refer to Section I to find the congenital and genetically transmitted diseases associated with a breed or breeds in which you are interested. Refer to Section II to find the names and definitions of those diseases.

  • Doodle Coat Structures
The Doodle as the ideal mixed breed Every Doodle enthusiast knows that the Doodle was once bred to be the ideal service dog and pet dog. Not only because of his character (gentle, intelligent and serviceable) but especially because of his hypoallergenic coat. A lot more research and work has been done on this topic than I touch upon here, so I will limit myself to the simple facts and logic since enough books are written on the subject. In order to develop a coat that is as hypoallergenic as possible six different breeds were used. All six had different coat structures, hair colors and tasks, so they had different characters. Number seven, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, was only used a few times because of the color and features of its coat. Shedding Not only do the colors and coat structures of the ancestors of the Australian Labradoodle differ but so does the shedding cycle for every breed. Coat maintenance Every breed needs its own specific coat maintenance to keep the coat healthy, clean and free of tangles. Insight into the coat structure and shedding cycle of all ancestor breeds provides a clearer picture of the required coat maintenance of a Doodle. Doodle coat structures So, a Doodle has a mixed coat as a result of six different coat structures. Labrador Retriever In order to optimally carry out its task the coat is short and shiny with a water-repellent wiry coat and a woolly, soft, weather resistant undercoat. A Labrador Retriever originally sheds twice a year but currently sheds almost constantly, making daily brushing a must.
