EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

Students learn. That is why people become students. It is my role as an educator to assist and facilitate that student/learner-centered process. This should be accomplished in a clear, concise manner in which expectations are well defined, and guidance is offered as to how goals may be achieved. Myriad lines of research demonstrate that learners incorporate and process information in various ways; sometimes best via a single modality, often through several different, complementary mechanisms. These include traditional didactic lectures, self-study, group interactions, problem- or case-based exercises, auditory input, visual input, peer-teaching, and others. As such, I provide video and audio recordings of my didactic lectures, facilitate several online courses and discussions, mentor small group discussions, utilize an audience-response system in large lectures, and require team projects. Another component of the educational process is assessment. Learners do best when given frequent, timely feedback regarding their performance and status. As course director, it is important to maintain faculty awareness of this goal, and assist them to the extent possible. Quizzes are utilized as both formative and summative assessments in my courses. These techniques and technologies are not used for their own sake, but rather as support for the concept that learners learn, not that teachers teach. That is my guiding principle.
