PM Addressing on the Occasion PM addressing on the occasion. 1 Speaking on the occasion, Chairman, PAEC, Mr. Anwar Ali said “Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission owes its success to its excellent human resource, most of which has received education and training in our own institutions-with PIEAS being the mainstay of our training programme. The graduates of PIEAS now form the backbone of the PAEC programmes. PAEC’s educational programme also supplements the much more extensive programme of higher education and training undertaken by the government under which HEC is sending hundreds of young scholars abroad for higher education. PAEC is also benefiting from its programmes. Already, more than 90 PAEC scientists have gone abroad under various HEC schemes”. Prime Minister awarding certificate of distinction to a student . Global Strategic & Security Studies Review, V(I), 23-31. doi:10.31703/gsssr.2020(V-I).03 Politics of Protest in Pakistan: Causes and Features of the PTI (2014) Dharna in Islamabad, Pakistan Pages: 23 – 31 | Vol. V, No. I (Winter 2020) Yaseen Ullah* | Manzoor Ahmad† | Syed Wasif Azim‡ Abstract Public protests, agitations and demonstrations are part of the democratic political process. In Pakistan’s history, protest or pressure politics have played a significant role. They have been held against ‘election riggings’ including the recent one against 2013 general elections. This study discusses the recent protest ‘popularly called Dharna’ staged by Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf (PTI) under the leadership of the present Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad for 126 days against the alleged rigging of elections of 2013. It explores the causes of PTI Dharna based on the primary data collected through interviews from students, lawyers and political activists in May-June 2019 in Lahore, Nowshera and Peshawar, Pakistan. We argue that the Dharna has multiple features long continued presence, participation of multiple groups, violence and media coverage. The significant reason of PTI for staging protest against Nawaz Sharif, inter alia, was the alleged rigging in the general elections of 2013. Key Words: Causes, Dharna, Features, Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf, Protest Politics Introduction Public protests, agitations and demonstrations are part of the democratic political process (Segalov 2015). It shapes the polity of a country and transforms social, political and economic aspects.

  • The Problematique of Education in Pakistan
Journal of Management and Social Sciences Vol. 5, No. 1, (Spring 2009) 13-21 The Problematique of Education in Pakistan Manzoor Ahmad * Formerly, Rector, International Islamic University, Islamabad ABSTRACT Education in Pakistan hasn’t made any headway. Neither the planners nor the implementers have succeeded in realizing the aims and objectives set forth in the successive Educational Policies. This paper attempts to study the causes which have resulted in the resent stalemate. The author thinks that one of the reasons is the lack of emphasis on the acquisition of critical mass of modern education. The dichotomy of faith and reason in Pakistan’s educational policies has not allowed the emergence of that critical mass of intellectual vigour which could promote independent thinking among the students. The author is of the opinion that the concept of the “Ideology of Pakistan” has had its share in the intellectual stalemate obtaining today. On top of the above cited malaise the commercialization of education rampant in the world nowadays has also had its salutary effect on the Third World countries and Pakistan is no exception. What is urgently required by Pakistan is that due emphasis should be paid to the study of social sciences. The Think-Tank of Social Scientists, Anthropologists, Philosophers and Historians should start a reexamination of the paradigm and suggest alternatives without sacrificing the basic value system. 1. THE PROBLEMATIQUE Education is still a problem area in Pakistan may be a platitude but it is stark reality. There exists a basic contradiction between the socio-political paradigm on the one hand and education on the other.
