Agnote No: E46 December 2005 Some Important Forage Plants of the Alice Springs District C. Allan, Pastoral Production, Alice Springs The Alice Springs district extends from the South Australian border north to Tennant Creek and east-west from the Queensland border to the Western Australian border. The area occupied by pastoral properties covers some 300,000 km2. This Agnote describes some of the important forage plants in this region. An associated Agnote "Rangeland Pastures of the Alice Springs District" (G4) describes the major plant communities of the region. Plants growing in the Alice Springs district can be considered in three broad categories: • Woody plants (trees and shrubs). These species browsed by cattle are called topfeed. • Grasses (both annual and perennial species). • Herbage (also called forbs). TREES AND SHRUBS Specific information on the description/recognition, nutritive value and grazing management of topfeeds can be found in the booklet "Fodder Trees and Shrubs of the Northern Territory" (copies available from Technical Publications, Department of Primary Industry, Fisheries and Mines). Some of the important trees and shrubs are: Mulga (Acacia aneura) - useful topfeed on better soil types. Easily killed by fire. Hot fires followed by wet years promote re-establishment. Also increases in wet years in the absence of fire. Witchetty bush (Acacia kempeana) - useful topfeed. Re-sprouts after burning. Can increase in wet years on country north of Alice Springs. Rabbits have impacted on its regeneration on much of the calcareous country south of Alice Springs. Ironwood (Acacia estrophiolata) (not to be confused with the poisonous type in the Top End) useful topfeed when accessible to cattle. -

Shrubs Shrubs 86 87 biibaya Broom bush Language name biibaya (yuwaalaraay) Scientific name Melaleuca uncinata Plant location Shrubs The biibaya (Broom Bush) is widespread through mallee, woodland and forest in the western part of the Border Rivers and Gwydir catchments. It often grows on sandy soils. Plant description The biibaya is an upright shrub with many stems growing from the main trunk. It grows between 1 to 3 metres high. The bark on older stems is papery. It has long, thin leaves which look like the bristles on a broom. Many fruit join together in a cluster which looks like a globe. Traditional use Can you guess what this plant was used for from its common name? The stems and girran.girraa (leaves) of the biibaya provided a useful broom. Bungun (branches) can also be cut and dried for use in brush fences. Paperbark trees (plants belonging to the genus Melaleuca) had many other uses also. The papery nganda (bark) was used to wrap meat for cooking and as plates, as well as being used as bandages, raincoats, shelter, blankets, twine and many other things. The nectar from the gurayn (flowers) could be eaten or drunk, steeped in water, as a sweet drink. Crushing the girran.girraa provides oil. Young girran.girraa can be chewed, or pounded and mixed with water, to treat colds, respiratory complaints and headaches. This mixture was also used as a general tonic. Inhaling the steam from boiling or burning the leaves provides relief from cold, flu and sinusitis (Howell 1983, Stewart & Percival 1997). The gurayn were also used for decoration. -

Dwarf Nettle Urtica urens Weed management guide for Australian vegetable production INTEGRATED WEED MANAGEMENT Identification Dwarf nettle (Urtica urens) is an annual herbaceous plant, native to Mediterranean Europe, that grows between 10 and 75 cm in height. Leaves are up to 6 cm in length but often 1-3 cm, oval to elliptical in shape, deeply toothed or serrated on the edges, green to dark green, and covered with scattered stinging hairs. Clusters of small, greenish-white flowers form where 1 the leaves join the stems. Dwarf nettle is also known in Australia as small nettle, lesser nettle, or stinging nettle. Vegetable farmers are likely to be very familiar with it where it is found on their farm, and to be well aware of how to identify it. However depending on its stage of growth, it may be possible to mis-identify it as tall nettle (Urtica dioica), native scrub 2 nettle (Urtica incisa) or potentially deadnettle (Lamium amplexicaule), particularly where the plants are recently germinated. Figure 1 includes a series of photos of dwarf nettle at different life stages in order to facilitate correct identifica- tion on-farm, from a young seedling through to a mature 3 flowering plant. Dwarf nettle may be mis-identified as native scrub nettle (Urtica incisa), a common species native to Australia. 4 Compared to dwarf nettle, native scrub nettle reaches up to 1m in height, has longer lance-shaped leaves (up to 12 cm) that are paler beneath, fewer stinging hairs, and spike-like clusters of flowers that can be longer than the leaf stalks. -

DECEMBER 2009. ______________________________________________________________________ 323 Philp Ave Frenchville Qld. 4701 12/12/2009 Dear Members and subscribers, Another ANPSA (formerly ASGAP) biennial conference and seminar has come and gone - the latest in Victoria at Geelong. I haven't heard anything much from this one yet, as no-one from Rockhampton attended, but I'm looking forward to reading the paper on bush foods that was presented by Dr Beth Gott. However, I also need to pass on the information that Philip Robinson has stepped down as ANPSA Study Group Co-ordinator to undertake other roles within APS Victoria, and the new Co-ordinator is Geoff Lay, Vice President of APS Maroondah, also in Victoria. We sincerely thank Philip for his work and assistance over recent years, and wish him well in his future endeavours. Also from the Conference comes the news of the passing of New South Wales APS stalwart Lyn Thompson after a short illness. Lyn was NSW Study Group Liaison Officer, and I knew her personally through attendance at many past conferences, as well as in our "official" capacities. She will be greatly missed. On the local front, the major concern has been the prolonged dry after reasonable falls in early summer twelve months ago. As we haven’t received a drop since, the countryside is looking very sad, and the town itself resembles a brown wasteland rather than the tropical green oasis of former years. The only green visible in the Berserkers (the mountains which form the backdrop to the city, separating it from the coast) are the pockets of Vine Scrub in the steeper gullies and along the creeks, as the rest of the vegetation (open grassy woodland) burnt to bare earth in the October fires, the worst in recorded history. -

Conservation Advice for the Karst Springs and Associated Alkaline Fens of the Naracoorte Coastal Plain Bioregion
The Threatened Species Scientific Committee provided their advice to the Minister on 31 July 2020. The Minister approved this Conservation Advice on 3 December 2020 and agreed that no recovery plan is required at this time. Conservation Advice1 for the Karst springs and associated alkaline fens of the Naracoorte Coastal Plain Bioregion This document combines the approved conservation advice and listing assessment for the threatened ecological community. It provides a foundation for conservation action and further planning. Karst springs and alkaline fens, Ewen Ponds © Copyright, Anthony Hoffman Conservation Status The Karst springs and associated alkaline fens of the Naracoorte Coastal Bioregion is listed in the Endangered category of the threatened ecological communities list under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). The ecological community was assessed by the Threatened Species Scientific Committee, who found it to be eligible for listing as Endangered and recommended that a recovery plan is not required at this time. The Committee’s assessment and recommendations are at Section 6. The Committee’s assessment of the eligibility against each of the listing criteria is: Criterion 1: Vulnerable Criterion 2: Endangered Criterion 3: Insufficient data Criterion 4: Endangered Criterion 5: Insufficient data Criterion 6: Insufficient data The main factors that make the threatened ecological community eligible for listing in the Endangered category are its historic losses to drainage, clearing and resulting fragmentation, and ongoing threats to its integrity and function, particularly from hydrological changes. The Karst springs and associated alkaline fens of the Naracoorte Coastal Plain Bioregion occurs within country (the traditional lands) of the Boandik and the Gunditjmara peoples. -
