Bauhaus Transfers to Mandatory Palestine Introduction A “Bauhaus style” would be a setback to academic stagnation, into a state of inertia hostile to life, the combatting of which the Bauhaus was once founded. May the Bauhaus be saved from this death. Walter Gropius, 1930 The construction activities of the Jewish community in the British Mandate of Palestine represents a prominent paradigm for the spread of European avant-garde architecture. In the 1930s, there is likely no comparable example for the interaction of a similar variety of influences in such a confined space. The reception of architectural modernism – referred to as “Neues Bauen” in Germany – occurred in the context of a broad cultural transfer process, which had already begun in the wake of the waves of immigration (“Aliyot”) from Eu- rope at the end of the nineteenth century and had a formative effect within the emancipating Jewish community in Palestine (“Yishuv”). Among the growing number of immigrants who turned their backs on Europe with the rise of fas- cism and National Socialism were renowned intellectuals, artists, and archi- tects.     ‘Where were you on Sept. 3, 2011?’ The signs all over Tel Aviv leading up to the big demonstration read: “Where were you on September 3, 2011?” Well, I was together with 450,000 Israelis on the streets, over 300,000 in Tel Aviv alone, with another 50,000 in Jerusalem, and 100,000 in Haifa and the north. Bibi: ‘You’re fired’ As I headed out for Habima Square, I felt a slight anxiety attack: there seemed to be too few people heading towards the Rothschild Blvd. Tent City headquarters. But the people kept coming. When I arrived at the “command headquarters”, everyone was in the midst of making makeshift homemade signs to carry, alongside the professional placards. Faces of ‘revolution’ The main attraction was a French artist who set up a photographic studio on the square, and lines of people were entering to have their photo taken and then converted into a placard which presented the face of the revolution – you and me, every one of us. The placards were plastered above the nearby banks and supermarkets which are among the targets of the demonstration, on the square itself, and later held on high by some of the model/demonstrators, some carrying their own image, some carrying images of others. In this digital age it was hard to tell the formal media from the citizen digital journalist/artist/documentarians since everyone was taking pictures of everyone else. People seemed to want to have a record that they were there on this historic day. Among the attractions at the starting point was a protester proudly waving a Che Guevera flag, a man in an Israeli flag mask and costume, and even a life- size mannequin on the back of a motorcycle of kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, now past his fifth year in captivity in Gaza.

Processes of urban design preservation and renewal in Tel- Aviv; HaBima Square Michal Silbiger 1 Processes of urban design preservation and renewal in Tel-Aviv; HaBima Square Based on my MA thesis at the Unit of Culture Research, Tel Aviv University (Silbiger, 2012) Urban planning and restoration have at their basis a need to allocate resources to those who build and design. The process of allotting resources is fundamentally of a social nature, combining individual intentions with communal aspirations. The theoretical framework utilized by urban sociologists to describe this process is eclectic and vastly interdisciplinary. Some sociologists of the city draw a connection between urban development and economic forces. Others call upon cultural ties based on interpersonal relationships and the multifaceted fabric that these relationships engender (also but not limited to socio-economic elements) as key points to understanding the urban makeup. The latter school of thought believes that the physical construction of the city bears testament to the beliefs and ambitions of diverse communities within the city who join forces to create the urban landscape. Such conceptualization of the forces operating within the city sees cultural symbols as a collective ideal made possible by a localization process that symbols undergo in order to make them emblematic of a given city.     Out of control: city branding and protest in Tel Aviv Eleonora Pasotti University of California, Santa Cruz [email protected] RC-21 Conference in Berlin, August 29-31 2013 Session 17.1 ABSTRACT To attract tourist and investors local governments develop city brands. How does city branding affect opposition to urban redevelopment? I propose that the adoption of city branding by local governments shift privileges “creatives,” whose skills rest specifically in the crafting of emotional experiences and messages. However, the political discourses that emerge are open to appropriation by rival political entrepreneurs. The analysis of Tel Aviv politics over the last decade and in-depth semi-structured interviews with protest organizers and participants shows how city branding was challenged by “creatives” to foment the largest protests in Israeli history. Yet, protest organizers too lost control of their message. Protests failed to produce notable policy results because organizers privileged maximizing mobilization over delivering specific platforms. Subsequently, protest values were co-opted by a rival political entrepreneur, landing a historical victory and displacing for the first time security from preeminence in Israeli national elections. Material redevelopment is pursued as a strategy to augment municipal revenues through permits, fees, and taxes from investors, residents and tourists. Yet, the symbolic aspect of redevelopment is also essential. Mayors undertake branding to compete with other cities (Anholt 2007), to attract investment (Greenberg 2008), and to raise political clout and legitimacy (Pasotti 2009).
