ACE's Scandinavian Sojourn
ACE’s Scandinavian Sojourn : A Southerner’s Perspective Story by: Richard Bostic, assisted by Ronny Cook When I went on the ACEspana trip back in 2009, it was by far one of the most amazing vacations I have ever experienced. In addition to getting to visit parks in a different culture than we see here, it is also a great opportunity to spend time with fellow enthusiasts and grow friendships while enjoying our common interests. When Scandinavia Sojourn was announced for the summer of 2011, I knew it was a trip I could not miss. Since the 2009 trip was my first trip to Europe I thought that there was no way the over- all experience could be better in Scandinavia. I was wrong. We landed in Helsinki, Finland around 1300 the day before we were required to be at the hotel to meet with the group. Helsinki is an interesting city and fairly new compared to many cities in Europe. Walking around the city you can see the Russian influence in the city’s architecture. In fact, many movies during the cold war would use Helsinki to shoot scenes that are supposed to be set in the Soviet Union. After making our way to the Crowne Plaza Hotel and getting a quick lunch at the hotel restaurant we decided to spend the remaining time that afternoon checking out some of the sites around our hotel. Some of these sites included the Temppeliaukio Church inside of a rock formation, the train station, Routatientori Square and National Theater, and a couple of the city’s art museums. -

Design of Roller Coasters
Aalto University School of Engineering Master’s Programme in Building Technology Design of Roller Coasters Master’s Thesis 24.7.2018 Antti Väisänen Aalto University, P.O. BOX 11000, 00076 AALTO www.aalto.fi Abstract of master's thesis Author Antti Väisänen Title of thesis Design of Roller Coasters Master programme Building Technology Code ENG27 Thesis supervisor Vishal Singh Thesis advisor Anssi Tamminen Date 24/07/2018 Number of pages 75 Language English Abstract This thesis combines several years of work experience in amusement industry and a litera- ture review to present general guidelines and principles of what is included in the design and engineering of roller coasters and other guest functions attached to them. Roller coasters are iconic structures that provide safe thrills for riders. Safety is achieved using multiple safety mechanisms: for example, bogies have multiple wheels that hold trains on track, a block system prevents trains from colliding and riders are held in place with safety restraints. Regular maintenance checks are also performed to prevent accidents caused by failed parts. Roller coasters are designed using a heartline spline and calculating accelerations in all possible scenarios to prevent rollbacks and too high values of accelerations, which could cause damage to riders’ bodies. A reach envelope is applied to the spline to prevent riders from hitting nearby objects. The speed and curvature of the track combined create acceler- ations that need to be countered with adequate track and support structures. A track cross- section usually consists of rails, cross-ties and a spine, while support structures can vary depending on height and loads. -

Jungle Adventure for SFDK
Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is in the northern California Bay Area and is themed after animals. It has 8 roller coasters and many animal exhibits, including many marine animal attractions along with safari animals like lions, giraffes, and elephants, and more. The park was originally an oceanarium that added a land animal park to it, later one it was converted into an amusement park with roller coasters and other small attractions and bought by Six Flags. Discovery Kingdom currently has 8 coasters. There are 7 steel coasters, 2 of which are inverted, while the rest are sit down, including 1 wooden roller coaster. The 8 coasters are: - Boomerang Coast to Coaster o Steel, Sit Down, Made By: Vekoma, 2 inversions: . Cobra Roll . Loop - Cobra o Steel, Sit Down, Made by: Zierer, No inversions - Kong o Steel, Inverted, Made By: Vekoma, 3 inversions: . Roll Over . Sidewinder . Double In-Line Twist - Medusa o Steel, Sit Down, Made By: B&M, 5 inversions: . Dive Loop . Zero-G Roll . Roll Over . Corkscrew (x2) - Roadrunner Express o Steel, Sit Down, Made By: Zamperla, Family/Kid ride - Roar o Wood, Sit Down, Made By: GCI - Superman Ultimate Flight o Steel, Sit Down, Made By: Premier Rides, 2 inversions . In-Line Twist . Non Inverted Loop - V2: Vertical Velocity o Steel, Inverted, Made By: Intamin, Twisted Impulse Coaster Since Discovery Kingdom did not start out as an amusement park, I believe that the park is lacking a bit in roller coasters, especially since there is only one wooden roller coaster. Also, the park is animal themed and although they name rides after the animals, they do not really theme the rides that much, which is something that is really disappointing. -

The top is a circular arc, matched to Cornu (Euler) spirals at about 70° from the top. Read more about roller coaster loop shapes at Phys. Ed. 51 (3) 013016 IV. The riders, both in front and back of the train move faster over the top than the middlerof the train. The difference is about 0.4g (which you can work out form the angle in the nearly circular arc at the top). During most rides in Kanonen, riders in the middle experience small "negative g's" (around -0.2g) and riders front or back around +0.2g. The brakes in the launch section are there to stop the train in the case of a "rollback" – if the train doesn't reach the top (read about magnetic brakes) V. Balder: I counted three beams of parabola, i.e. 7.5m, which takes about 1.2s on the way up and then 1.2s on the way down. More about Balder VI. The train moves with essentially the same speed all three times. -

Park, Coaster, and Site Selection: Six Flags America ● Last new rollercoaster was added in 2012 - an uncomfortable (from experience) stand up rollercoaster ● The other major parks in the Maryland-Virginia-DC area include Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion, both of which are very well-received parks ○ Six Flags needs to step up their game - so a new rollercoaster will be beneficial to the park ○ Many year end trips from schools go to amusement parks, and if SFA wants to be the site of that excursion, they need something new and exciting. ● SFA does not have a great layout - there is a long path that only leads to Batwing. Not only is this inconvenient for park-goers, but it is inefficient as people have to walk a long way, only to find one ride. Video Watching/Reflecting Liked 1. Interactions between two rollercoasters (Dualing Dragons) 2. Dueling rollercoasters look very complex when intertwined and can add to the park’s scenery (Dragon Challenge) 3. Two completely different rollercoasters in one ride. In Battlestar Galactica (Universal Studios Singapore) both ride experiences are completely different, and have different highlights catering to the interests of many different people. One track may be less intense and family friendly, while the other track might be more for a rollercoaster enthusiast. Disliked 1. Rollercoasters such as (Dragon Challenge) might have too many inversions and be less appealing to those who get nauseous easily. 2. Wooden rollercoasters tend to be really rough, in particular Gwazi. 3. Some dueling rollercoasters did not focus on enough exciting elements (Fiorano GT Challenge) and were also really short (Batman and Robin: The Chiller). -

How Roller Coasters Work by TOM HARRIS & CHERISE THREEWITT
How Roller Coasters Work BY TOM HARRIS & CHERISE THREEWITT If you enjoy studying physics (and who doesn't), there are few more exhilarating classrooms than roller coasters. Roller coasters are driven almost entirely by basic inertial, gravitational and centripetal forces, all manipulated in the service of a great ride. Amusement parks keep upping the ante, building faster and more complex roller coasters, but the fundamental principles at work remain basically the same. In this article, we'll examine the principles that keep coaster cars flying around on their tracks. We'll also look at the hardware that keeps everything running, as well as the forces that make the rides so much fun. The amusement-park industry has experienced a coaster boom of sorts in recent years. New catapult launching techniques, hanging-train designs and other technological developments have opened a world of options for designers. There are now coasters that give riders the experience of flying, and those that shoot riders down long stretches of spiraled tracks. "Fourth dimension" coasters spin or rotate seats as the ride twists, turns and free-falls. Keep reading as we loop you in on all the newest features and innovations in roller coaster. Roller Coaster History Roller coasters have a long, fascinating history. Roller coasters are the direct ancestors of monumental ice slides — long, steep wooden slides covered in ice, some as high as 70 feet (21 meters) — that were popular in Russia in the 16th and 17th centuries. Riders shot down the slope on sleds made of wood or blocks of ice, crash-landing in a sand pile [source: Levine]. -
