As a result of the demands of the metal-works and the needs of the Buckley potteries, the coal miners of Flintshire were freed from their dependence upon the markets of Chester and Dublin, and they enjoyed considerable prosperity in the last decades of the 18th Century. John kindly sent me copies of materials he had obtained from Stella Meaton of Crewe, including George Kelsall’s petition and pedigree charts. I later received many significant documents obtained by Andrew Kelsall Pearson. I am especially indebted to Pat Spode, Robert Speake and Stan Brassington of the Audley Family History Society for obtaining and translating wills from Lichfield and for translating additional wills I had obtained from Chester. I have also obtained assistance from many others including: Helen Kelsall Wilson, Margaret Pember, Ian Bailey, Robert Mayer, Ian Bloor, Joan Dobson, and David Kelsall. Last, but certainly not least, I am of course indebted to my parents, Charles and Joan Kelsall of Buckley. https://d.docs.live.net/a6f0465d10ca93df/Documents/Genealogy/Kelsall/My Kelsall family/Main Kelsall Files/KELSALL.docx 4 ©Peter Kelsall, 2019 Introduction Our Kelsall family can be traced with reasonable certainty to James Kelsall and Johanna Short who were married in Audley, Staffordshire in 1563. James moved to Audley from Cheadle in Cheshire sometime before 1539 and died in Audley in 1583. Originally the Kelsall name was derived from the Cheshire village of the same name, and traces back at least to Adam de Kelsall in the 1290’s. From James to my children, Angie and Ian, we can trace 14 generations of the Kelsall name. The Kelsall history in Buckley is traced back to the late 1700s through family records, the Hawarden parish registers, and the 1841 to 1881 censuses. It appears that the family originated in Buckley with Richard Kelsall and Mary Birks who moved with their children from Staffordshire to Buckley most probably between 1750 and 1755. Richard Kelsall was involved with coal in Audley and it is likely that the family moved when new coal mines were opening in the Buckley area. The connection to Audley was originally obtained from the family history of Richard Kelsall found in the LDS Ancestral File submitted by Mr. John McNamara of Queensland, Australia. I have since verified or corrected part of this by reference to the Mold, Hawarden and Audley parish registers. The Kelsall history in Cheshire and Staffordshire is obtained from these main sources: ➢ The Kelsall family tree in Audley prior to about 1720 is largely derived from the “Kelsall Pedigrees”, a manuscript held by the Staffordshire Record Office1. ➢ various “Kelsall Pedigrees”, originally compiled by William Kelsall (1641- 1720) and used by George Kelsall in 1833 in connection with a property claim; these pedigrees and
