THE "SETON-GORDONS " Of the cadet branches of the family of Seton by- far the most Important, and the largest, is that which, only two generations after its emergence from the parent stem, dropped the patronymic and. assumed the surname of the heiress of Gordon. In so far as the history of Scotland is concerned, this family of "Seton-Gordons", i.e. the Gordons who originated from the Setons, was a more consistently im- portant factor in the affairs of State than the main line, from the early 15th Century onwards. To their undoubted success many factors contribu- ted. When Alexander de Seton, second son of Sir William de Seton, married in 1408 Elizabeth de Gordon he became through her, and her maternal relations, the .possessor of large properties. He found himself at once in the position of one of the great land owners in the North; and he and his successors were particularly skilful in "birsing yorifj;" their boundaries.

PREFATORY NOTE. This volume completes the Index to this Commissariot, so far as it is proposed by the Society to print the same. It includes all Testaments recorded before 31st December 1800. The remainder of the Record down to 31st December 1829 is in the General Register House, but from that date to the present day it will be found at the Commissary Office. The Register for the Eighteenth Century shows a considerable falling away in the number of Testaments recorded, due to some extent to the Local Registers being more taken advantage of On the other hand, a number of Testaments of Scotsmen dying in England, the Colonies, and abroad are to be found. The Register for the years following on the Union of the Parliaments is one of melancholy interest, containing as it does, to a certain extent, the death-roll of the ill-fated Darien Expedition. This was primarily due to its strategic importance as the northern gateway into the Hebrides to the west, and Caithness and Sutherland to the north. The power derived from the earldom’s strategic situation was enhanced by the status of its earls. From 1215 to 1372 the earldom was ruled by an uninterrupted MacTaggart comital dynasty which was able to capitalise on this longevity to establish itself as an indispensable authority in Scotland north of the Forth.

A study of how the Kennedys extended their influence across south-west Scotland and acquired an earldom has never been undertaken. This thesis aims to fill the significant gap in our understanding of how lordship operated in this region. In particular, analysis of the interactions between the Kennedys and the earls of Carrick, usually the monarch or his heir, demonstrates that the key factor in their success was their policy of close alignment and support of the crown.

  • Wardlaw Family
GENEALOGY OF THE WARDLAW FAMILY WITH SOME ACCOUNT OF OTHER FAMILIES WITH WHICH IT IS CONNECTED DATE MICROFILM GENEALOGICAL DEPARTMENT ITEM ON ROLL CAMERA NO CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS CATALOGUE NO. iKJJr/? 7-/02 ^s<m BY JOSEPH G. WARDLAW EXPLANATION OF CHARACTERS The letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H denote the generations beginning with Robert (Al). The large figures indicate the heads of families, or those especially mentioned in their generation. Each generation begins with 1 and continues in regular sequence. The small figures show number, according to birth, in each particular family. Children dying in infancy or early youth are not mentioned again in line with their brothers and sisters. As the work progressed, new material was received, which, in some measure, interfered with the plan above outlined. Many families named in the early generations have been lost in subsequent tracing, no information being available. By a little examination or study of the system, it will be found possible to trace the lineage of any person named in the book, through all generations back to Robert (Al). PREFACE For a number of years I mave been collecting data con cerning the Wardlaw and allied families. The work was un dertaken for my own satisfaction and pleasure, without thought of publication, but others learning of the material in my hands have urged that it be put into book form. I have had access to MSS. of my father and his brothers, Lewis, Frank and Robert, all practically one account, and presumably obtained from their father, James Wardlaw, who in turn doubtless received it from his father, Hugh.

  • The Chiefs of Colquhoun and Their Country, Vol. 1
Ë D IMBUR6H I 8 6 9. THE CHIEFS OF COLQUHOUN AND THEIR COUNTRY. Impression: One Hundred and Fifty Copies, In Two Volumes. PRINTED FOR SIR JAMES COLQUHOUN OF COLQUHOUN AND LUSS, BARONET. No. /4 ?; ^ Presented to V PREFACE. AMONG the baronial families of Scotland, the chiefs of the Clan Colquhoun occupy a prominent place from their ancient lineage, their matrimonial alliances, historical associations, and the extent of their territories in the Western Highlands. These territories now include a great portion of the county of Dumbarton. Upwards of seven centuries have elapsed since Maldouen of Luss obtained from Alwyn Earl of Lennox a grant of the lands of Luss; and it is upwards of six hundred years since another Earl of Lennox granted the lands of Colquhoun to Humphrey of Kil- patrick, who afterwards assumed the name of Colquhoun. The lands and barony of Luss have never been alienated since the early grant of Alwyn Earl of Lennox. For six generations these lands were inherited by the family of Luss in the male line; and in the seventh they became the inheritance of the daughter of Godfrey of Luss, commonly designated " The Fair Maid of Luss," and, as the heiress of these lands, she vested them by her marriage, about the year 1385, in her husband, Sir Eobert Colquhoun of Colquhoun. The descendant from that marriage, and the repre sentative of the families of Colquhoun and Luss, is the present baronet, Sir James Colquhoun. The lands and barony of Colquhoun also descended in the male line of the family of Colquhoun for nearly five centuries; and although the greater part of them has been sold, portions still a VI PREFACE.
