  • Divergent Movie Review & Film Summary
In Memoriam 1942 – 2013 | ★ ★ ★ ★ ROGEREBERT.COM Choose a Section REVIEWS DIVERGENT ★ ★ ☇ | Christy Lemire March 21, 2014 | ☄ 13 "Divergent" is all about identity—about searching your soul and determining who you are and how you fit in as you emerge from adolescence to adulthood. So it's all too appropriate that the film version of the wildly popular young adult novel struggles a bit to Print Page assert itself as it seeks to appeal to the widest possible audience. Like 23 It's the conundrum so many of these types of books face as they become pop-culture juggernauts and film franchises: which 2 elements to keep to please the fervent fans and which to toss in the name of maintaining a lean, speedy narrative? The "Harry Tweet 19 Potter" and "Hunger Games" movies—which "Divergent" resembles in myriad ways—were mostly successful in finding that balance. In bringing the first novel of Veronica Roth's best-selling trilogy to the screen, director Neil Burger ("Limitless") and screenwriters Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor have included key moments and images but tweaked others to streamline the mythology and move the story along. The results can be thrilling but the film as a whole feels simultaneously overlong and emotionally truncated. Folks who've read the book will probably be satisfied with the results, while those unfamiliar with the source material may dismiss it as derivative and inferior. (Stop me if you think you've heard this one before: "Divergent" takes place in a rigidly structured, dystopian future where one extraordinary girl will serve either as its destroyer or its savior.) But the performances—namely from stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James and Kate Winslet in a juicy supporting role—always make the movie watchable and often quite engaging.

Discussion Questions for Divergent by Veronica Roth These discussion questions were prepared by the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) for the Reader with a Cause book club on Goodreads. If you like our questions please feel free to use them – and don’t forget to join the conversation online at https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_folder/221831 1. Tris: “My will is mine...I shall not make it soft for you.” -Aeschylus, Agamemnon Roth describes this quote as “integral to my discovery of Tris’s voice. I wanted to create a character who could and would deliver that line...Her voice is clipped, direct, and strong, just like these lines.” After being told she was Divergent, and ultimately choosing Dauntless, Tris struggled with her identity and sense of belonging. In the end, she finds her strength and direction by defining herself as more than just her faction. “I have no home, no path, and no certainty. I am no longer Tris the selfless, or Tris the brave. I suppose that now, I must become more than either.” (Chapter 39) What do you think of our slight, yet strong heroine? Did you like her or identify with her? Are there any passages from the book that really made you understand or empathize with Tris? How do you think she compares to heroines in other contemporary Young Adult series – like Bella Swan (Twilight), Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games), Hermione Granger (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone), or Clary Fray (City of Bones)? 2. Book vs. Movie: A movie adaptation premiered in theaters March 21, 2014 and pulled in a cool $56 million in its opening weekend alone (the sequel is already in the works).

CRITICAL DISABILITY DISCOURSES/ DISCOURS CRITIQUES DANS LE CHAMP DU HANDICAP 9 Pulling the Rug Out From Under (Neuro)Divergence in the Divergent Universe Alyssa Hillary Zisk* Alyssa’s pronouns: they/them/theirs University of Rhode Island, Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program [email protected] Abstract Veronica Roth’s Divergent series explicitly portrays neurological diversity, along with questions of identity, family, class, choice, values, and power. It is often considered an empowering narrative for people who do not fit in, a common experience among the teen readers who are the intended audience of most young adult literature. However, it is not clear that this narrative truly supports neurodivergent people, despite neurogenetic differences being the explicit form of diversity the series’ events hinge upon. This article critically examines the portrayal of neurological difference in Roth’s universe through the neurodiversity paradigm, and finds that neurotypicality is significantly privileged by the narrative. Keywords Neurodiversity; young adult literature; Veronica Roth; representation; autism *Alyssa is a doctoral candidate in the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program at the University of Rhode Island. They are interested in neurodiversity and representation, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), both in terms brain computer interfaces and as used by autistic adults, and actually putting academic and neurodivergent community knowledge together to good use. Alyssa uses AAC part time as a student, teacher, and researcher. • Divergent Trilogy
DISCUSSION GUIDE ABOUT THE BOOK In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions—Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite—each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue. Now that she’s sixteen, Beatrice must select the faction to which she will devote the rest of her life and decide between staying with her family or being who she feels she really is. But she also has a secret—one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. As Beatrice chooses her path and starts training to become a contributing member of society, she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel the very foundations of the world she knows. She also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . or it might destroy her. A “perfect society” unravels, revealing an electrifying dystopian world, in this first book of the Divergent trilogy. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. What purpose does each of the five factions serve in society? What personality types are drawn toward each faction? Do you think these factions represent every basic personality type and fulfill all the basic needs of people? If not, what faction(s) would you create to fill in any gaps? 2. What was the reason behind the creation of the factions? Do you think the factions are working “toward a better society and a better world” (p. 44) as they say they are? What about the structure seems to be working for Tris’s society? What doesn’t seem to be working at all? 3.

  • Allegiant by Veronica Roth Harpercollins Publishers ©2013
Allegiant by Veronica Roth HarperCollins publishers ©2013 Science Fiction 526 pages The Final Fight By Jordan Imagine a future where humans are considered either “pure” or “damaged”. Equality is merely an idea that can only be dreamed of for the “damaged”. In the book, Allegiant, by Veronica Roth, named after a group of rebels, one person who is “pure” fights for an equal world alongside her friends who are considered “damaged". Their struggle for equality is the basis for this, the third book in the series. Building from the story in the first two novels of the series, Roth takes the main character, Tris Prior, on a journey of awakening as Tris learns the truth of the world around her. Set in a futuristic dystopian Chicago, Tris volunteers to leave the city with her friends with the help of a group known as Allegiant. The primary goal of the group, Allegiant, is to bring back the old society which was overthrown by those who were rejected by it. Equality is a major theme in the book. The author is drawing a parallel with real life with the point that everyone is different but everyone is equal and should be treated as such. Veronica Roth tries to show that even though everyone is unique, everyone has an equal right to be and no one person is more important than anyone else. Roth has a unique way of keeping the reader interested and involved in the book. She creates cliffhangers and suspenseful situations that keep the reader wanting to know what’s next.
