GOLD, INSTRUCTOR-PIPER HIGH SCHOOL Bronte Falls 2 OVERVIEW OF EMILY BRONTË Emily Brontë has become mythologized both as an individual and as one of the Brontë sisters. She has been cast as Absolute Individual, as Tormented Genius, and as Free Spirit Communing with Nature; the trio of sisters–Charlotte, Emily, and Anne–have been fashioned into Romantic Rebels, as well as Solitary Geniuses. Their lives have been sentimentalized, their psyches psychoanalyzed, and their home life demonized. In truth, their lives and home were strange and often unhappy. Their father was a withdrawn man who dined alone in his own room; their Aunt Branwell, who raised them after the early death of their mother, also dined alone in her room. The two oldest sisters died as children. For three years Emily supposedly spoke only to family members and servants. Their brother Branwell, an alcoholic and a drug addict, put the family through the hell of his ravings and threats of committing suicide or murdering their father, his physical and mental degradation, his bouts of delirium tremens, and, finally, his death. As children, Charlotte, Branwell, Emily, and Anne had one another and books as companions; in their isolation, they created an imaginary kingdom called Angria and filled notebooks describing its turbulent history and character. Around 1831, thirteen-year old Emily and eleven-year old Anne broke from the Angrian fantasies which Branwell and Charlotte had dominated to create the alternate history of Gondal. Emily maintained her interest in Gondal and continued to spin out the fantasy with pleasure till the end of her life. -

History of Education Researcher. 97: 1-3.] Editorial: ‘Ad fontes’ Lord Asa Briggs of Lewes sadly passed away on March 15th this year. Perhaps better known for his social history of the Victorian era, than his institutional histories of the BBC and Marks and Spencer, Briggs had played a key role in the Second World War as a member of Intelligence Corps staff in Hut 6 at Bletchley Park, a fact that featured prominently in a recently broadcast BBC documentary.1 A memoir, Secret Days: Codebreaking in Bletchley Park: A Memoir of Hut Six and the Enigma Machine, was published in May 2011 to coincide with Lord Briggs’ 90th birthday, and recounted his five years working alongside the likes of Alan Turing and Gordon Welchman. As is well known, central to the work of Hut 6 was the instrumental exploration of an abundance of encrypted messages. These were the only source of information, yet from them, complex codes were cracked ‘sometimes even before they were read by their intended recipients’.2 The members of Hut 6 sifted these messages, looking for unique insights into the contents of individual communications, as well as mapping patterns and protocols used between them; their methods varied, developed and advanced, but their sources remained steady. Briggs, as a historian, was perhaps particularly able to ascertain the significance of individual messages to their senders and receivers. Possibly less widely known was Briggs’ interest in the history of education, being a contributor to the first ever edition of our sister publication, History of Education. -

Asa Briggs, Baron Briggs of Lewes, 1921-2016
Professor Pat Thane, Honorary President of the Social History Society, looks back on the life of her predecessor, Asa Briggs, who served in the role from the Society’s foundation in 1976 until he died in the spring of 2016. Asa Briggs, Baron Briggs of Lewes, 1921-2016 Keighley Asa Briggs was born on 7 May 1921 in Keighley, Yorkshire. He received the unusual name, Asa, in memory of his mother’s younger brother of the same name who died just before he was born. A biblical name, it originated in the Nonconformist, Congregationalist faith of his mother and her family.1 His father, William, was a skilled engineer who had worked for Vickers naval yard in Barrow-in-Furness, but in Asa’s early years he ran a greengrocer’s shop established and previously run successfully by his wife, Jane’s, father, once a small farmer, driven off the land as agriculture declined. The family, including Asa’s sister, Emma, lived upstairs and Jane, and Asa as a young boy, helped in the shop. William was a reluctant shopkeeper, less successful than his father-in-law, driven to it by the depression which hit northern manufacturing from late 1920 and the desire to keep it in the family. As the depression deepened in the 1930s the shop failed and he returned to work as an engineer in a local textile engineering plant. Briggs recalled Keighley as a small, smoky, industrial town, hard hit by the depression but relieved by the presence of moorlands nearby and Haworth, Brönte country. The family lived in a working class district and he had a ‘happy childhood, despite money worries… [ but]… with no sense of economic security or prosperity’.2 ‘We were not straight working class but very near to it’ he said later.3 His father was a skilled pianist and his mother sang in her chapel choir: the family really did sing together around the piano.4 It was different from Margaret Thatcher’s experience around the same time (she was born in 1925) as a shopkeeper’s daughter in the relative security of Grantham. -

Charlotte Brontë and the Politics of Cloth: the ‘Vile Rumbling Mills’ of Yorkshire
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by ChesterRep 1 Charlotte Brontë and the Politics of Cloth: The ‘vile rumbling mills’ of Yorkshire Deborah Wynne This essay examines Charlotte Brontë’s engagement with the textile industry from her earliest writings to her 1849 Condition of England novel Shirley in order to emphasise the role that Yorkshire and its staple industry played in her writing. Critics have discussed Brontë’s interest in textile production largely in relation to Shirley. However, her fascination with cloth manufacturing is evident in many of her Angrian tales and some of her unfinished novels. This essay argues that through her early representations of mills and mill owners Brontë formulated an understanding of political conflict and masculine power which helped to shape her mature writing. This culminates in Shirley with her critique of the taboo against educated women entering careers in trade and manufacturing. KEYWORDS ‘An American Tale’, Ashworth, Haworth, mills, politics, textile manufacturing, Shirley, The Moores, The Professor, ‘Something About Arthur’, Stancliffe’s Hotel, Yorkshire In 1837 Robert Southey famously wrote to the young Charlotte Brontë stating his view that ‘Literature cannot be the business of a woman’s life’.1 Yet in Shirley, published twelve years later, depicting the West Riding of Yorkshire’s textile industry at the time of the Luddite rebellion, she contemplates an even more prohibited career for genteel Victorian women in the form of textile manufacturing. Woollen textile manufacture, the staple industry of the West Riding, was a phenomenon Brontë was able to observe closely, for Haworth was dominated by mills and the workshops of wool-combers and weavers.2 Her fascination with the world of manufacturing is evident in many of her Angrian tales, as well as in some of her unfinished novels, and it is through her early representations of textile production that she 2 formulates ideas of masculine power. -

Asa Briggs (1921-2016) The British Association for Victorian Studies is very sorry to learn of the death of Lord Briggs. Our condolences go to Susan Briggs and the Briggs family. Historian, teacher, academic statesman, Asa Briggs was a towering figure who shaped the 'map of learning' (one of his favourite phrases) in profound ways. British higher education and the world of scholarship were both profoundly transformed by him. It is quite simply impossible to imagine the world of Victorian Studies without him. This short tribute cannot hope to do justice to his numerous achievements. Briggs's world view was formed by growing up in Keighley during the Depression and then serving in the War (when he worked at Bletchley Park). It left him with a strong work ethic and a commitment to reform and social improvement. He quickly became one of the major intellectuals who shaped post-war Britain, comparable to figures such as Michael Young (the subject of a biography by Briggs) and his friend Roy Jenkins. Beginning his teaching career at Oxford, he quickly went on to a Professorship at Leeds and was then given the opportunity to shape the curriculum at the new University of Sussex in the early 1960s. I went to Sussex as an undergraduate in 1979, three years after he had left, and I can still remember the feeling that Sussex was still very much Asa Briggs's university. He turned Sussex into the great interdisciplinary university of the age, insisting that students had to learn from different disciplines and bring them into conversation with one another.
