Vision Statement: To Welcome. To Inspire. To Transform. To Serve. A NOTE FROM FATHER DAVID This weekend we celebrate the great gift of the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ given to us as the central mystery of our Catholic faith. The traditional name of this feast is Corpus Christi Sunday. We may think that there is already a feast for the Eucharist: Holy Thursday. On that night, his presence is veiled as we recall his passion and death. In this feast, however, there is a different focus: we are in the afterglow of Easter time, seeing that the Lord’s glory is not hidden, but visible to all. So some parishes have Eucharistic processions on this day carrying the sacrament exposed in the monstrance. Let us pray for a renewed faith in the real presence of Jesus among us in this sacrament, and commit celebrating the Eucharist (mass) regularly. May we experience a more abiding unity through the Eucharist, and humbly yet courageously live this unity as joyful missionary disciples. Please consider joining us for mass this Friday morning in another devotion that honors God’s great love for us through Christ: The feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. GOD HAS BEEN GOOD TO ME With deep gratitude to God, I observe the 25th anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood this Tuesday, June 25. On that day in 1994 I was ordained a priest for the archdiocese of Detroit, along with Fr. Jeff Monforton, who is now the bishop of the diocese of Steubenville, Ohio. Retired Cardinal Adam Maida was the bishop who ordained us. Since ordination, I have been at the following parishes: associate pastor at Guardian Angels, Clawson, from 1994-97; associate pastor at St. Patrick, White Lake, from 1997-99; pastor at Immaculate Conception in Ira Township (Anchor Bay), from 1999-2008; pastor at St. Mary, Wayne, from 2008-13, and I have been at St. Mary since 2013. In my unworthiness, God has called, and I have tried to respond. I have been so blessed by the people whom God has sent into my life through my vocation. It is a privilege to accompany people on their spiritual journey, and help them to grow closer to Jesus Christ with a deeper faith. My faith has also been inspired by the witness and dedication of others who love the Lord and serve so selflessly. continued on page 7. . .

LAY LEANINGS By Deacon Mike Stewart © 2019 Mike Stewart Email: [email protected] Used with permission I know, I work too much. I’ve been told. The tendency to overwork has followed me throughout life. I’m expecting that I’ll have plenty of time to rest after God takes me home. My wife, on the other hand, has found more balance in her life, and with great patience she’s tried to help me find some too. This past week she once again provided a great example.

Since it was the final week of school for our grandsons, my wife and daughter declared a Mom’s-only ‘field day’. Not that I would have crashed the party anyway, but clearly, I was not invited. And this field day didn’t require a school bus or parent permission slips. Rather, it required only two Moms with the express intention to rest and play, while enjoying each other’s company and the beautiful sunny day God blessed them with.

I reflected later on that whole notion of taking a ‘field day.’ In a world that seems to consider un-purposed leisure a sign of inefficiency, the idea of just taking time directed at intentionally NOT ‘doing’ much of anything but rest and play, is almost rebelliously and refreshingly counter-cultural. And yet, it’s in the sometimes obsessive ‘doing’ to which many of us are enslaved, that we lose our balance on our life’s journey. If our lives revolve solely around work and family responsibilities, when and how do we take time to listen for God’s quiet presence in our lives? When and how do we take time to rejuvenate and recharge our drained batteries? And honestly, when was the last time you can remember just intentionally taking time to go play?

Since I minister regularly to teenagers, I annually take groups of high school seniors to volunteer at an inner-city grade school in Detroit for what we call simply a ‘Field Day.’ Sadly, many of these urban kids don’t routinely get the opportunity to go outside and just be kids at play. It was fascinating just to watch them run and play freely with our teenagers, oblivious to the brokenness of the world around them. I also had the opportunity to accompany a group of high school seniors to a remote mission in Guatemala. One day our kids challenged some local village kids to a game of soccer, and the result was almost magical. In both cases, it occurred to me that to ‘play’ – whether you are a child or an adult - is a universal language that transcends cultures and boundaries.

The bible is largely silent about the early years in Jesus’ life, and yet I love to imagine that what he learned as a child, he carried with him into adulthood – the value of just letting the inner kid come out once in a while.

Thus says the LORD of hosts: The city will be filled with boys and girls playing in its streets. Zechariah 8:4R5

The family and friends of Noreen Ellen Kibat gathered on Wednesday, June 12th to remember and give thanks to God for the blessings bestowed upon her throughout her earthly life. Noreen found fulfillment in caring for others. For many years she worked as a nurse’s aide as well as a “pink lady” volunteer at a hospital near her home. Additionally she shared her gifts and talents through the outreach of St. Vincent De Paul Society in Taylor as well as helping with funeral luncheons at her parish. Her faith in God led her to become an IHM Associate. Noreen and her husband Edwin Richard Kibat (d. 2007) shared sixty one years of marriage. They were blessed with three sons who survive her; Michael (Cheryl): Richard (Regina); and Russell (Kimberly). Six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild brought much joy to Noreen, who enjoyed baking for them especially for the holidays. In addition to spending treasured time with her family, Noreen enjoyed ceramics, vacations, puzzles and playing cards with friends. St. Mary Parish offers its prayerful support to Noreen’s family. May God bless each of you with His abiding presence and peace in the coming days and weeks as you grieve passing of your mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. May the memories and joys of former days console and comfort you as you wait in hope for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thank you, people of St. Mary and Monroe, for being a part of my journey over the past six years. I love you and want the best for you. As I take on the pastoral responsibility of St. John the Baptist on July 1st, I pledge to strive to serve God’s people in the midst of these interesting times in which we live as a joyful missionary disciple, which we are called to be through our baptism. It has been a joy to reconnect to people in Monroe, since I have family and school connections here in Monroe, as well as my father’s working at Monroe Auto Equipment (Tenneco) for almost 30 years, retiring in 1998. My faith was nourished and developed in Erie, in the parish life of St. Joseph Church (which is celebrating its bicentennial as a parish this year). I was blessed to have a family and community support system that helped me to hear and respond to God’s call to serve. I worked at Grodi’s farm in Erie and became active in the church at a young age. In a special way I would like to thank my parents, David and Marilyn, for their constant love and support. I am also blessed to have the example of four of my aunts who entered the religious life as Sisters of Notre Dame in Toledo, with their joy and dedication to the Lord. So, I ask for your prayers for me and all priests. Let us pray that we will not lose sight of God’s power to help us and give us hope in our daily life. We also pray that more men and women may hear and respond to God’s call to serve His people as humble, joyful disciples who bring the Good News to all who long to hear it. Thank you for your love and care, dear people of God as we look to whatever the future has in store for all of us who always remain God’s beloved children. AMAZING!

One of my favorite hymns has always been Amazing Grace. When taking my very first theology class, we studied this song and I found it very moving. Just the hearing word AMAZING brings to my mind a sense of wonder, something startling and marvelous, and something very astounding. This word brings about emotions. In today’s gospel account Jesus uses the word amazing, and he is not referring to His father (who we know is amazing). But he uses this word to describe Roman Centurian who asked for help for one of his servants. Jesus says he has not seen faith like this in all of Israel! Now this is Jesus who witnessed many people of faith. He also witnessed many people with little to no faith, who came to have great faith. But in this account, this Roman Centurian went to the top of Jesus’ list! Wouldn’t it be great if we all could have the kind of faith that amazed Jesus?
