Publicado por: Abdul Nasser Thabet Es habitual que cuando un ajedrecista gana en la súper élite se le rindan honores. También que se le critique un poco si cede. Pero con los empates pasa algo curioso: casi nadie se regodea en abordar una partida igualada. Las tablas se cogen por los pelos y se tiran para rellenar un hueco. Este viernes Leinier Domínguez (2734 puntos Elo) empató en el Grand Prix. Y no es relleno, es noticia. La paridad y el «dale al que no te dio» formado en la octava ronda del certamen lo acomodaron en el primer puesto. Su rival de turno en Khanty-Mansiysk, Rusia, fue el anfitrión Evgeny Tomashevsky (2749), líder del ranking general de la competición después de tres fases completas, con 252 unidades. Una bestia herida que ganó la tercera parada del circuito, acaecida en Tbilisi, pero que justo ahora en su país natal apenas araña la antepenúltima plaza. Protagonizaron un maratónico cotejo, el último en concluir. El «Toma» —llamémoslo así, cariñosamente— se plantó fuerte y furioso con piezas blancas, ansioso de maquillar su historial de tres armisticios con Domínguez. Abrió con d4 y el cubano respondió con la Grunfeld. Todo en calma hasta el medio juego, y de repente, pum, el dichoso «Toma» tomó a Leinier y le sacó ventaja de dos peones a la altura del paso 49. Ninguno de los dos imaginó que seguirían luchando hasta el lance 101. Mucho menos que el resultado sería el que fue. Leinier encontró el camino correcto debido a su maestría para pensar lo impensable y hacer lo indecible, pero sobre todo porque siempre tuvo ventaja en el reloj. Batallaron seis horas. De solo escribirlo me duele la cabeza. La gran sorpresa de la fecha fue el éxito del ruso Dmitry Jakovenko (2738) sobre el italiano Fabiano Caruana (2803), luego de 47 golpes de una apertura Ruy López, variante Berlín, en la que el favorito bambino llevó el blanco. También cantaron victoria el samurái americano Hikaru Nakamura (2799), con piezas oscuras en 80 movidas de una Peón Dama frente al georgiano Baduur Jobava, y el israelí Boris Gelfand (2744), con figuras claras ante el local Peter Svidler (2734) en 62 de una Grunfeld. Otro airoso en la jornada resultó el ruso Alexander Grischuk (2780), quien destrozó con blancas a su compatriota Sergey Karjakin (2753) tras 40 heridas de un Gambito de Dama. En tanto, el galo Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (2754) pactó la paz con el holandés Anish Giri (2776) en 32 caricias de otro Gambito de Dama. Así las cosas, Leinier comanda la lista en Khanty-Mansiysk, merced a cinco rayitas. Con idéntico acumulado aparecen Caruana y Nakamura. Gelfand, Jakovenko y Karjakin guardan 4,5 kilos, mientras Svidler y Grischuk acumulan 4. Giri suma 3,5 y Tomashevsky y Jobava solo 3. Vachier-Lagrave levanta la mano con el estómago vacío (apenas 2 unidades). Precisamente el francés verá al cubano en la novena fecha, pactada para el domingo tras el descanso sabatino. Este año Leinier ha jugado 26 partidas frente a sesudos de más de 2700, con un saldo de cuatro sonrisas (divididas en ambos colores) y 22 empates. Su única derrota fue ante Jobava. Lo curioso es que las cuatro víctimas del antillano han sido rusas: Andreikin, Grischuk, Jakovenko y Svidler. Since his first appearance in 1993, he has come seven times to Biel; it is precisely at this Festival that he earned one of his greatest victories: in 1993, he finished first in the Interzonal Tournament (which, by then, was the only qualifying competition for the world championship), out of 73 participating grandmasters (including Anand and Kramnik). His victory in Biel against Anand is mentioned in his book, My Most Memorable Games.

The first round of the championship began on Friday 17th with the record of 1173 players from 46 countries (104 titled players including 13 IM, 1 WGM and 4 WIM)! Most players came from Russia (186 players) and the Czech Republic (154 players). Entonces, como en las buenas películas, sobrevino un final desconcertante.
