CURRICULUM VITAE REVEREND FATHER SHANE MACKINLAY BISHOP-ELECT OF THE DIOCESE OF SANDHURST Shane Mackinlay was born in Melbourne in 1965 and attended the local government school until his family moved to Ballarat in 1975. In Ballarat, he was a student at St Francis Xavier Primary School and St Patrick’s College, where he was dux in 1982. He has two siblings and is the uncle of five nieces and nephews. He studied for the priesthood at Corpus Christi College, Clayton, completing theology studies at Catholic Theological College and a degree in physics at Monash University. As a deacon, he served in the parish of Warrnambool, before being ordained as priest for the Ballarat Diocese in 1991, and serving in the parishes of Hamilton, Colac and Ballarat Cathedral. He then undertook graduate studies in philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, where he completed a Master’s degree and a Doctorate. His doctoral thesis was published by Fordham University Press. Father Mackinlay was administrator of the Casterton parish for six months and parish priest of the Sebastopol parish for four years. He has been parish priest of the Bungaree parish since 2005; since 2009, he has also provided weekend sacramental ministry for the neighbouring parish of Gordon. For several years, he taught philosophy at Australian Catholic University, Ballarat. Most of his teaching has taken place at Catholic Theological College, Melbourne, where he has been Master since 2011. The following year, he was appointed Associate Professor by the University of Divinity. From 2012 to 2014 he was the spokesperson for the Catholic Church during the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and other Non-Government Organisations. He was secretary to the Bishop of Ballarat from 1998 to 2001, and has been the chairperson of the Bishop’s Advisory Council of the Ballarat diocese since it was established in 2009. .

Prof. Shane Mackinlay, Master of CTC, regarding the passing of Dr Rod Doyle cfc on Saturday morning: “Early on Saturday 30th July, Dr Rod Doyle cfc died peacefully in St Catherine’s home, where he has been living for some time. Br Rod commenced at Catholic Theological College in 1984 and has served the College with great devotion, generosity and humility since then. As well as twenty-two years as Academic Dean, he was a conscientious lecturer in biblical studies, where at times he single-handedly ensured the continuation of New Testament studies. He was appointed a Senior Fellow of CTC in 2006. After his retirement from lecturing, he continued to work at the College in supervising research students and assisting lecturers with advice and corrections, as well as his own research. Even in declining health over the last year or so, Rod ensured that he visited CTC regularly to update his displays in the Mannix Library, including the College’s collection of antique coins, which he curated with such care and attention. We will miss Rod’s scholarship, friendship, generosity, eye for detail and quiet wit, as well as the living connection he provided to the earlier life of our building as Cathedral College, where he had taught in the 1960s. CTC Community News Tolle Lege December 2019 . Community news An eventful year ends in prayer and thanksgiving On Friday 8 November, the CTC community gathered in the Knox Lecture Room for the End-of-Year Mass, which was celebrated this as a Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit. As the academic year drew to a close, this was a wonderful opportunity to come together in the presence of Christ, offering our prayers and thanks as we reflected on the events of the past year and our hopes for the year to come. Our former Master, Bishop Shane Mackinlay, joined us as chief celebrant, and our new Master, Very Rev. Dr Kevin Lenehan, delivered an apt and thoughtful homily (see facing page). The Mass was also an opportunity to present Bishop Shane with the College’s parting gift to him—a beautiful red chasuble and matching mitre. Following the Mass, refreshments were served with the generous assistance of the Student Representative Council, providing another less formal opportunity for the College community to farewell Bishop Shane and welcome Father Kevin to the role of Master of CTC. 3 2 | Tolle Lege . CTC Community News Tolle Lege SeptemberSeptember 20192019 Community news CTC farewells Bishop-elect Shane Mackinlay On 23 July, it was announced that Pope Francis had appointed Very Rev. Assoc. Prof. Shane Mackinlay as the eighth Bishop of Sandhurst, taking over from Bishop Les Tomlinson, whose resignation was announced on the same day. Fr Shane’s appointment as Bishop brings to an end his term as Master of Catholic Theological College, but not his association with the College, which will continue through his membership of the College Senate. Appointed to the position of Master in 2011, Fr Shane brought considerable gifts and experience at a time when the College’s relationship with the Univeristy of Divinity continued to develop and become more complex (see Dr Frances Baker’s tribute on page 4). Throughout his time as Master, he also continued in parish ministry, serving as a parish priest in the Ballarat Diocese in addition to his duties at the College. In taking up the role of Bishop of Sandhurst, he looks forward to continuing his ministry in regional Victoria. “I love teaching and also being involved with people in their local parish communities and I very much look forward to continuing those 1 two ministries in a different way in my new role,” he said. Australian Catholic Bishops Conference president Archbishop Mark Coleridge recalls teaching Fr Mackinlay and said the qualities he observed then have developed in the years since. “Bishop-elect Mackinlay combines high intelligence with good strategic ability, deep faith with a capacity to engage the culture,” Archbishop Coleridge said. “All of this will make him a fine Bishop of Sandhurst and a real gain for the Bishops Conference at this important and complex time. I congratulate Fr Shane and look forward to working closely with him in the years ahead.” Fr Mackinlay was born in Melbourne in 1965, his family moving to Ballarat 10 years later. CATHOLIC DIOCESE OUR DIOCESAN of BALLARAT COMMUNITY News around the Diocese No. 53 October 2017 TOWARDS 2020 The Catholic Church in Australia has commenced preparations for a Plenary Council to be held in 2020. A Plenary Council provides an occasion for the whole Church to discern what the Holy Spirit is saying to our Church at this time. For this to happen, wide consultation of the entire Australian Church will be necessary so that all voices have an opportunity to be heard. Processes that enable all to genuinely listen to each other will also be required. A new relationship of trust and confidence has to be created within the Church in Australia and the wider community. The last time a Plenary Council was held in Australia was eighty years ago in 1937. At that time those engaged in the Plenary Council were advised to “take care that provision is made for the pastoral needs of the people of God… and to decide what seems opportune for the increase of the faith, the organization of common pastoral actions and the regulation of morals and of common ecclesiastical discipline which is to be observed, promoted and protected.” A Plenary Council has legislative capacity that will be applicable to the Church in Australia. The idea of having another Plenary Council in Australia has been around for some years. The idea has been given fresh impetus by Pope Francis’ encouragement of a ‘synodal’ style of Church and also by the reflection on the lessons of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS CONFERENCE PLENARY MEETING November 25-29, 2019 On Monday 25 November, the Catholic Bishops of Australia gathered for the biannual Plenary Meeting at the Catholic Leadership Centre, East Melbourne. The eight Commissions of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference held meetings on the first day of the gathering, followed by the Plenary Meeting over the four subsequent days. Opening Mass The Mass of the Holy Spirit was concelebrated on Tuesday 26 November in St John the Evangelist Church. Conference president Archbishop Mark Coleridge was the principal celebrant and preached the homily. Welcome Archbishop Coleridge welcomed his fellow bishops and the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana. Archbishop Yllana concelebrated Mass, met bishops informally and addressed the Plenary Meeting. Archbishop Coleridge also welcomed the secretaries to the Apostolic Nunciature, Monsignor Emmanuel Fadeyi and Monsignor Giuseppe Quirighetti, as well as the observers from Catholic Religious Australia: president Br Peter Carroll FMS and vice-president Sr Patty Fawkner SGS.
