The Australianness of this literature manifests itself in seri- ous attempts to lay out for older child readers a distinctively Australian mythos by drawing on white colonial and indigenous stories, and for younger readers, in exuberantly comic celebrations of the eccentric, dis- gusting, and outrageous. For the first half of the century, Australian chil- dren’s literature follows a general line of development from its nineteenth-century colonial origins, with the superbly disrespectful excep- tion of Norman Lindsay’s The Magic Pudding. In the second half of the century, many Australian books for children follow British and American trends: in realist fiction toward the adolescent problem novel and in fan- tasy toward the high heroic quest. The taboo-smashing short story and novel for younger readers, a literary form pioneered by Australian writers, promises a significant contribution to international children’s literature in the formation of a new genre.

  • Carole H. Carpenter, "Monica Hughes: Canadian, Eh?"
Monica Hughes: Canadian, Eh? Carole H. Carpenter Many people responded to the proposed topic for this paper with considerable surprise: “the ‘Canadianness’ of Monica Hughes’s work and its relationship to and influence on Canadian science fiction and fantasy for children?! But Monica Hughes isn’t Canadian, is she?” The answer is a resounding yes, albeit Mrs. Hughes was born in Liverpool, England, in 1925; lived in Egypt from infancy to age six; went to school, then university in Scotland for a time; and worked for two years in Zimbabwe before traveling to Canada in 1952. She was en route to Australia but got waylaid by circumstances, the place, and the people, especially one significant person, her husband, Glen, whom she married in 1957, the year she also became a Canadian citizen. In the context of a discussion of the Canadianness of Mrs. Hughes’s work, it is noteworthy that she committed herself to Canada as soon as the five-year residency requirement was met. She obviously found in the “True North” an amenable home. Now, more than forty years, four children, and almost forty books later, Monica Hughes is the most widely recognized Canadian science fiction writer for children and was the first such writer of international caliber (Saltman 89). In The New Republic of Childhood, the single most comprehensive work on Canadian children’s literature to date, The Keeper of the Isis Light was proclaimed “a shining touchstone for judging children’s science fiction” worldwide, not just in Canada (Egoff and Saltman 283). This is high praise, especially given Sheila Egoff’s declaration in 1969 that “Science fiction for children is not literature” (390) and her opinion the year after Keeper was published that “science fiction for children, unlike that for adults, has no .

  • The Post-Apocalyptic Heroine and the Australian Girl Reader of Isobelle Carmody’S Obernewtyn Chronicles
McAlister The Obernewtyn Chronicles Macquarie University Jodi McAlister Girls growing up Gordie: the post-apocalyptic heroine and the Australian girl reader of Isobelle Carmody’s Obernewtyn Chronicles Abstract: Australian young adult (YA) fiction has a post-apocalyptic tradition that considerably pre-dates dystopia’s current global popularity. Long before characters like Katniss Everdeen and Tris Prior emerged into mainstream popular consciousness, Australian YA fiction gave us several strong heroines struggling for a better life in a post- apocalyptic setting. One such was Elspeth Gordie of Isobelle Carmody’s Obernewtyn Chronicles. The Obernewtyn Chronicles are unusual in that they have been published across a considerable span of time. The first book was published in 1987, while the final instalment is not due to be published until the end of 2015. Numerous readers of the series have, in many ways, grown up with it: discovering it as pre-teens or teenagers, and continuing to follow it into adulthood. The first Obernewtyn fan site – obernewtyn.net – was established in 1999, and continues to be active to this day. However, despite the current popularity of texts like The Hunger Games and Divergent, the Obernewtyn Chronicles are not especially well known outside Australia. This article will explore the ways in which fans interact with and respond to the Obernewtyn books, and the ways in which this has evolved and changed. It will investigate two key questions. Why have the Obernewtyn Chronicles appealed so strongly to an Australian audience? And why have they appealed so strongly to a girl audience? I will draw on several different critical theories to unpack this appeal, including postcolonial theory, feminist theory, girlhood studies, and auto- ethnography.
