ABST RACT This guide is a summary of bursaries, loans and other financial assistance available for obtaining a degree, certificate or diploma at a university, technikon or college in the Republic of South Africa, Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda or Ciskei. Bursaries are indexed under the headings: title of the award, 4ield of study for which the award is available, number available, financial value, duration of the award, institution where award is tenable, eligibility of applicant, service contract obligations, may the student apply, closing date for applications and address from which further particulars can be obtained. The book also contains an alphabetical list of the fields of study for which the awards are available and an alphabetical list of institutions where awards are tenable. Approximately 1500 entries have been compiled, mainly from the latest available bursary brochures of all the universities and technikons in the RSA and TBVC countries. This report is a useful aid for vocational guidance officers and a reference work for prospective students seeking financial assistance for further study. The guide will be revised every two years. 7 -iv- HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE The aim of this book is to provide a summary of financial assistance available for obtaining a certificate, diploma or degree after Standard 10 at a university, college or technikon. The bursaries, loans and other forms of financial aid appear under the heading 'Awards' and are arranged in alphabetical order and then numbered. The following suggestions will help you find information on the awards: Awards are usually offered for a specific field of study and the index of fields of study is a useful aid for tracing the awards. Look for the field of study in which you are interested and consult the numbers thereunder in order to locate the awards. Also look under related fields of study. For example: for awards under 'Chemistry', one can also look under 'Natural Sciences' and for 'Civil Engineering' under 'Engineering'. A large number of awards are not connected to a specific field of study. These awards are listed under the title 'Any field of study'.Also look under this heading for awards in which you are interested. Use the index of istitutions where awards are tenable in the same way as the index of fields of study. Apply for bursaries and loans in good time. The application form has to be obtained, completed and submitted before the closing date indicated under the award. Do not apply for bursaries and loans for which you are not eligible as bursary donors usually adhere strictly to the conditions of the award. Some organisations prefer not to make their bursaries widely known. This book istherefore not a complete account of allavailable financial assistance, but it does contain nearly all the awards available. If you do not find an applicable bursary/loan in it your chances of finding such a bursary/loan in another source are poor. -v- Bursaries which are only available for study overseas are not included in this book. Such information may be found in The Grants Register (Editors: C.A. Lerner and R. Turner, St. Martin's Press Inc., 175 Fifth Avenue, New York.) In this guide matriculant, means a person who intends to study at a university, technikon or college; student, means a person who is already studying at a university, technikon or college; matriculation examination, means the Matriculation Certificate examination or the Senior Certificate examination (matriculation exemption) equivalent examination; any tertiary institution, means any university, technikon or college which offers the course concerned and for which a Senior Certificate or equivalent is required; any university or any university in the RSA, means that some of these awards are also tenable for study abroad; bursary, means that the award is made on the basis of academic achievement, financial need and other conditions; scholarship or merit award, means that a person should have excelled academically to be eligible for this award; bursary loan, means that the award usually includes a service contract which on breach of contract becomes a loan, and prize, means that the prize money should be used for further study. Although the information in this publication has been compiled carefully, some of the bursaries and loans may not be valid. Applicants should thus ascertain when applying whether the award is still available. There may also be new awards which the HSRC is processing, details of which do not appear in this

CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Berner Fachhochschule: ARBOR Chris Walton Farbe bekennen.

  • Chapter 1: from Autonomy to Heteronomy: a Change of Paradigm in South African Art Music, 1980-2006
Chapter 1: From autonomy to heteronomy: A change of paradigm in South African art music, 1980-2006 Introduction Composition in South Africa has been an increasingly contested artistic and ideological space since the early 1980s. In this dissertation I argue that the demise of apartheid and the rise of democracy resulted in an institutional and aesthetic crisis for the field of composition, embodied in musical terms by a shift away from a Eurocentric paradigm to a cross-cultural one that embraced various ‘African elements’ within a framework of modernism and discourse of accessibility. In this chapter I consider the factors – both internal to the field of art music and those resulting from larger societal changes – that contributed to this artistic and ideological shift. Partly I am concerned with the politics of the field itself: the struggle for power within a highly contested cultural space. More broadly I am interested in the position of the field relative to changes in society at the macro level, in terms of race, class, and economic imperatives. A central question is, to what extent did the restructuring of the field in response to these changed imperatives affect the aesthetic choices of composers? The autonomy of art music during apartheid was challenged by the politicization of the field during the 1980s. The extent and rapidity of social and institutional change, and the new self-consciousness that it evoked in composers previously only concerned with “production for producers” (Bourdieu 1993:15), resulted in a crisis that foreshadowed an aesthetic revolution, or change of paradigm. In this chapter I present the theoretical basis for this claim and explain some of the historical reasons for its emergence.

So many individuals have played decisive roles, not only in the research that constitutes this thesis, but also in the fostering of my intellectual development, ethical sensibilities and spiritual well-being. In many different ways, each of these individuals and their views matter and have become important to me.
