Many patches of Deschampsia antarctica (Poaceae), the only indigenous Poaceae specie in Antarctic, were found dead, parasitized by a fungi pathogen. Based on the shape of its perithecia, with oblique neck, erumpent in the grass tissues, ascospore form and septation, the specie was identified as new to science. Flowering buds of plants growing in their natural habitats on King George Island and generative tissues of both plant species grown in a greenhouse were analyzed. Adaptations to autogamy and anemogamy were ob− served in the flower anatomy of both species. The microsporangia of the evaluated grasses produce a small number of three−celled pollen grains. Numerous pollen grains do not leave the microsporangium and germinate in the thecae. Deschampsia antarctica and P. annua plants harvested in Antarctica developed a particularly small number of microspores in pol− len chambers. In D. antarctica, male gametophytes were produced at a faster rate: genera− tive cells in pollen did not become detached from the wall of the pollen grain, they were not embedded in the cytoplasm of vegetative cells, and they divided into two sperm cells situ− ated close to the wall. The monosporous Polygonum type of embryo sac development was observed in the studied species. -

During this period, many extant plant lineages in temperate biomes evolved from tropical ancestors and adapted to seasonality and cool conditions. Among the Poaceae (grass family), one of the subfamilies that successfully shifted from tropical to temperate biomes is the Pooideae (temperate grasses). -

The northern shore is a beach of cobbles and boulders, approx 1.5km long, backed by steep vegetation- covered cliffs toward the east and gentler slopes to the west. FAUNA Confirmed breeders: gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua), kelp gull (Larus dominicanus), Antarctic tern (Sterna vittata), snowy sheathbill (Chionis alba), blue-eyed shag (Phalacrocorax atriceps), Wilson’s storm- petrel (Oceanites oceanicus), skuas (Catharacta spp.), snow petrel (Pagodroma nivea), pintado petrel (Daption capense). Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) and Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) regularly haul out. Leopard seals (Hydrurga leptonyx) often hunt near-shore. Measure 4 (2009) – Annex Management Plan for Antarctic Specially Protected Area No. 113 LITCHFIELD ISLAND, ARTHUR HARBOR ANVERS ISLAND, PALMER ARCHIPELAGO Introduction Litchfield Island lies within Arthur Harbor, SW Anvers Island, at 64°46'S, 64°06'W. Approximate area: 2.7km2. Designation on the grounds that Litchfield Island, together with its littoral zone, possesses an unusually high collection of marine and terrestrial life, is unique amongst the neighboring islands as a breeding place for six species of native birds and provides an outstanding example of the natural ecological system of the Antarctic Peninsula area. In addition, Litchfield Island possesses rich growths of vegetation and has the most varied topography and the greatest diversity of terrestrial habitats of the islands in Arthur Harbor. Proposed by the United States of America. Adopted through Recommendation VIII-1 (1975, SPA No. 17); renamed and renumbered by Decision 1 (2002); original management plan adopted through Measure 2 (2004). 1. Description of values to be protected Litchfield Island (Latitude 64°46'S, Longitude 64°06'W, 2.7km2), Arthur Harbor, Anvers Island, Antarctic Peninsula was originally designated as a Specially Protected Area through Recommendation VIII-1 (1975, SPA No. 17) after a proposal by the United States of America. It was designated on the grounds that “Litchfield Island, together with its littoral, possesses an unusually high collection of marine and terrestrial life, is unique amongst the neighboring islands as a breeding place for six species of native birds and provides an outstanding example of the natural ecological system of the Antarctic Peninsula area”. The current management plan reaffirms the original reasons for designation associated with the bird communities. -
