Rather than focusing on this event as a “first” in repatriation history or using it as a character assessment of the director of the museum, this account highlights the clan’s agency and resistance through an examination of their negotiation for the return of a sacred bundle and the objects they selected to provide in exchange. Through this example, we see how tribes have had to make hard choices in hard times, and how repatriation is a form of resistance and redress that contributes to the future of a community’s wellbeing in the face of a history of religious and colonial oppression. The New Criterion Art April 2014 Gallery chronicle by James Panero On the “Invitational Exhibition of Visual Arts” at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York, the “2014 Whitney Biennial” at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and “Volta NY” at 82 Mercer Street, New York Go see this year’s “Invitational Exhibition of Visual Arts” at the American Academy of Arts and Letters.1 Then go see it again. First off, this restorative show of more than 120 paintings, sculptures, photographs, and works on paper by thirty-seven contemporary artists offers an excuse to visit Audubon Terrace, one of New York’s most unexpected spaces, and one that deserves renewed attention. Located on a hillside of what was once John James Audubon’s family farm, this block west of Broadway between 155th and 156th Streets in upper Manhattan was purchased and developed as a cultural complex in the beaux-arts style by Archer Huntington, beginning in the first decades of the twentieth century. Its unusual location was perhaps a real-estate miscalculation, based on the belief that Manhattan’s center of development would continue to sweep northward, rather than skyward, as it soon proved to do through the development of the high-rise. But the relative remoteness of Audubon Terrace must now be seen as its saving grace. The pull of the skyscraper has never stretched the complex out of recognition like so many other institutions. Moreover, as the city’s peripheral places, extending in an arc from industrial Brooklyn to northern Manhattan and the Bronx, have now become new centers for living art in New York, Audubon Terrace feels like an old spirit with renewed vitality. -

This is why the top of the building is engraved with the names of famous explorers. HISTORY of AUDUBON TERRACE: ARCHER MILTON HUNTINGTON You are now standing within Audubon Terrace. It is a complex of eight Beaux Arts buildings from the early 20th century whose architects include some of the major stars of the period: Charles Pratt Huntington, Stanford White, and Cass Gilbert. Audubon Terrace was originally part of a farm belonging to painter and naturalist John James Audubon, who is best known for his paintings and descriptions of birds. -

ALL FOR ONE: NATION-MAKING AND THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by William Neal Skinner August 2009 © 2009 William Neal Skinner ABSTRACT In September 2004, the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in Washington DC provided the nation with another opportunity to self-narrate on both sub-national and national levels. For many Native and non-Native peoples, the newest Smithsonian Institution represented not only a new method of museological practice based on self-governance and representation but also that Native America existed prior to European Contact, continues today and is worthy of being understood as both part and precursor of a larger collective identity of the nation. This occurred with the museum’s successful Mitsitam Café whereby American cuisine was defined with a Native genesis. The landscape, as well, was scripted as begin original to the northeastern habitat of the United States, in contrast to the Beaux-Arts inspired landscapes of Europe which define the rest of the National Mall. A sensory engagement with both the Café and landscaped grounds, moreover, would separate this particular museal space- intended to be a Native place- from its neighbors. How the senses attend to an engagement with the museum is central to the planning behind the institution- as well as my analysis- whereby the sensorium is mediated both for public consumption and to meeting particular ideological ends. At the same time that Native America is re-presented in our nation’s capital, however, sub-national agendas are continually negotiated by the nation-state, whether aligned or not. -

The particular focus is the region around Mount Roraima on the triple border point of Brazil, Venezuela and what was then British Guiana. This was one the more isolated areas of Amazonia, an apparently pristine wilderness far from the encroachments of European colonization and an area frequently depicted in the media as a ‘lost world’, bypassed by history and home to unknown species of flora and fauna that had survived from earlier geological periods. The compilation of a new and accurate map of Roraima presented several problems for the AGS cartographers whose desire to create a rational, scientific representation of the region was continually confronted by colorful myths and legends promoted by novelists, journalists and cinematographers. NPS Form 10-900 USDI/NPS NRHP Registration Form (Rev. 8-86) OMB No. 1024-0018 THE HISPANIC SOCIETY OF AMERICA COMPLEX Page 4 United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Registration Form Summary The Hispanic Society of America Complex, located in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City, is nationally significant under NHL Criterion 1 as an exemplary representation of a nationally significant shift in both attitudes toward Hispanic culture and understanding of Hispanic-American history in the United States and under NHL Criterion 2 for its association with the nationally significant philanthropist, Archer M. Huntington. Founded in 1904 by Huntington, The Hispanic Society of America was created to “serve as [an] instrument…through which Americans could gain a direct knowledge of their heritage from Spain.”1 The Hispanic Society of America building, completed in 1908 with additions, and the North Building, opened in 1930, were constructed as part of Audubon Terrace, a cultural center in the Washington Heights neighborhood established by Archer M. Huntington and largely designed by his cousin, Charles P. Huntington. The property includes sculpture by Archer Huntington’s wife, Anna Hyatt Huntington. This grouping of cultural institutions was designed to promote and encourage cultural and intellectual activity, with The Hispanic Society of America Complex as one of its focal points. Audubon Terrace (contributing site) Audubon Terrace occupies most of an urban block bounded by Broadway on the east, Riverside Drive on the west, and 155th and 156th Streets on the north and south, respectively.
