INFORMATION Probably no one was in the recording studio more than Margie Singleton from 1955-1965. Her husband, Shelby, was head of A&R for MERCURY RECORDS and brought her onto sessions for his complete roster: pop, R&B, and country. She also made records her- self, first for STARDAY,then MERCURY,andthen UNITED ARTISTS, before she and her second husband, Leon Ashley, began ASHLEY RE- CORDS with a #1 hit, Laura (What's He Got That I Ain't Got).The untold story of Margie Singleton is here. She might just have been one of the most versatile women in music at that time. A natural singer, Margie sang on plenty of hits but didn't have the hits that should have been hers.     ALWAYS … PATSY CLINE Chronology October 2017, Jewel Theatre Company Shaun Carroll, Director © Susan Myer Silton, Dramaturge Key: DJ (disc jockey), NYC (New York City), UK (United Kingdom), US (United States), WWI (World War I) 1932 Patsy is born Virginia Patterson Hensley on September 8 at Winchester Memorial Hospital, Winchester, Virginia. 1932-1946 The events of Virginia (Ginny’s) life during these years are described narratively throughout the glossary, in the definitions and in her biography on pp. 1-10. 1946 – 1947 Virginia auditions for DJ Joltin' Jim McCoy at Radio Station WINC, Winchester. She wins a regular spot on McCoy's Saturday broadcast. 1948 Virginia catches the ear of Wally Fowler when Fowler brings his Oak Ridge Quartet to the Palace Theater in Winchester. Fowler invites Virginia to audition for WSM In Nashville. Ginny and Hilda travel to Nashville. Virginia auditions for Opry talent manager Jim Denney, but does not receive an immediate offer for employment. She returns to the clubs and taverns around Winchester. 1952 Virginia begins working with Bill Peer and his Melody Boys at the Moose Lodge in Brunswick, Maryland. Peer becomes her manager, and at his urging, she adopts the stage name "Patsy," derived from her middle name of Patterson. They become lovers, even though he is married. Peer manages Patsy’s career, getting her gigs and working tirelessly to ensure that she is seen and heard by people who will put her in the spotlight. He not only guides and nurtures her career, he bankrolls it out of his own pocket, working several jobs and often going into debt to do so.

    Leroy Van Dyke — Bio Leroy Van Dyke, of "Auctioneer" and "Walk On By" fame, star of the movie, "What Am I Bid?" is known around the world as an entertainer, recording artist, radio and television star, actor, auctioneer and veteran of the Nevada circuit. He has recorded over 500 songs, and probably holds the record for most repeat-performance bookings of any working, name country music entertainer. He has worked 40 to 70 fairs and livestock events per year for over five decades, in addition to a great variety of other engagements. He was born on a farm (not in a hospital) in rural Pettis County, Missouri, without the amenities of running water and electricity. Elementary schooling was in one-room country schools, then to high school at Sedalia, where he ranked third in a class of 180 graduates. Leroy is a graduate of the University of Missouri with a dual major: Animal Husbandry and Journalism, with a minor in Speech. He received a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, did one semester of graduate work, and was a member of both the junior and senior University of Missouri intercollegiate livestock judging teams. After serving as a special agent, U. S. Army Counter-Intelligence Corps, in Korea, Leroy was catapulted into show business while working as a journalist, when his self-penned "Auctioneer" recording went a million-plus just weeks after its release. He then joined Red Foley's ABC-TV Network "Ozark Jubilee" in Springfield, Missouri, as a regular member, and continued in that position for three years until the show left the air.

    LEROY VAN DYKE by Tamela Meredith Partridge “Herald & Review” newspaper Decatur, IL. © 2006 Country singer, Leroy Van Dyke, knew exactly what he wanted to pursue in life from the time he was a small boy growing up on a ranch in Missouri. "There are only four things I ever really had an obsession or passion about," Van Dyke says by tele- phone from his Smithton, Mo., farm. "One is singing, one is selling, one is writing and the other is raising livestock. Fortunately, I've had the opportunity to do all four." Van Dyke will perform on Saturday at Nashville North in Taylorville. Van Dyke, who charted nearly twenty country singles including "The Auctioneer," "Walk On By" and "If A Woman Answers (Hang Up The Phone)," is also a farmer, writer and auctioneer. "I'm a licensed and bonded auctioneer graduate of the Repperts School of Auctioneer- ing," Van Dyke says. "I also received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Missouri, where I majored in Animal Husbandry and Journalism, with a minor in Speech.” Van Dyke served in the army from 1952-1954 as a counter-intelligence special agent during the Korean War. ”Part of my job in Korea was to give security lectures to the troops up at the front lines, bunkers and trenches,” Van Dyke says. “One day, the assistant regimental commander asked if I would take my guitar with me when I gave those security lectures. So I did. I’d drive up in the hills in my jeep, take out my guitar, sing some songs, give my lecture and head back down the mountain.” While in Korea, Van Dyke wrote the song, “The Auctioneer,” which was inspired by his second cousin and premier auctioneer, Ray Sims.

  • 66 a Guitar Player, Leroy Had Spent Part of His Time in Korea
    A guitar player, Leroy had spent part of his time in Korea entertaining his buddies. It was during this time that he wrote “The Auctioneer,” about the life of his cousin, National Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame member Ray Sims. The song gave Van Dyke an opportunity to show off one of his growing list of professions, that of auctioneer (he himself was also later inducted into the Auctioneers Hall of Fame). The composition brought not only smiles from those who heard it, but also encouragement from a host of top brass who thought their man should try to market the tune. After his discharge, Van Dyke took their advice and performed “The Auctioneer” live on “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts” television show. Leroy won first place that night and was rewarded with a recording contract with Dot Records. Then he went to Chicago to perform the song on WGN Radio where he met Buddy Black, who was an announcer at the station. Black signed on to be Van Dyke’s manager, but during the legal negotiations, he sneaked in a document listing himself as co-writer of “The Auctioneer,” therefore giving him half the royalties for the song. Leroy was reluctantly okay with Black’s rather shady agreement, but he couldn’t follow it up with another hit. However, Van Dyke remained in the public eye by joining the cast of the highly- successful “Ozark Jubilee” television show, broadcast live each week from Springfield, Missouri on the ABC-TV Network. After that program ended its run in 1960, Leroy landed a new recording contract with Mercury Records, and was looking for a song that would re-start his career and place him back on the charts.
