Professor, Dept. of Economics, Rabindrasadan Girls’ College, Karimganj, Assam Abstract Assam, the land of blue hills and green forestry, is one of the tribal living states of India. The total number of tribal population is highest in Assam as compared to other North-Eastern states. Fourteen (14) schedule tribes inhabit in Assam. SonowalKacharis inhabit over upper Assam covering seven districts viz-Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat. Some of SonowalKachari people inhabit in Arunachal Pradesh also. Among these districts of Assam Dibrugarh district is the largest inhabitat of SonowalKacharis. According to 1991 population census the total SonowalKachari population was 2,51,727. It has increased to 3,12,656 in 2001 in the state of Assam. The development of a society requires full participation by all section of the population including women. Involvement of women in entrepreneurial activities would ensure effective utilization of labour, generation of income and hence improvement in quality of life. It is realized by all the nations that social and economic changes can be ensured mobilizing women to take up entrepreneurial activities. The present study seeks to examine the economic activities and also problems faced by them in their various entrepreneurial activities in the society. Thus the present paper carries a great importance to study about the position of entrepreneurial activities among women in sonowalkachari society. The present study is based on data collected from primary and secondary sources. The primary data are collected from field survey through direct personal interview with the help of well- designed questionnaire. The SonowalKachari women are in recent time very much interested in entrepreneurial work. But it has been observed that like other community women the rate of growth of women entrepreneurship is not enough among them. This is due to some basic problems arising in relation to entrepreneurial development in such societies. By considering all these sides the present paper is prepared with the objectives like, level of education, Causes of selecting this profession, age- group, training, finance etc. Based on all the objectives the present paper is presenting the main problems faced by the women entrepreneur like lack of education, lack of finance, lack of training etc. After identifying different problems the paper includes some suggestions to solve those. The traditional, ethnic and a primitive approach of the inhabitants to create built environment to establish the title of vernacular which is specific and critical to the region. The term vernacular is used to categories methods of construction to use locally available resources and traditions to address local requirements. Vernacular architecture tends to evolve over a period of time to reflect the traditional, climatic, cultural and historical context in which it exists. It has often been dismissed as crude and unrefined, but also has proponents who highlight its importance in present situation. This study initiates to understand the socio-cultural, economic and ethnic traditions of river island Majuli, Assam that is influencing over the years to develop the unique vernacular architecture of region. Three case studies of the dominant Mising, Deuri and Sonowal Kachari tribes have been made to showcase various character of tribal architecture of Majuli and analyse the local construction techniques and locally available building materials of the region.     2. People of Assam 3. People of Assam 3.1.Introduction Assam falls in one of the great migration routes of mankind and over the ages there have been waves of migration of diverse groups. The possible routes of migrations are: the northern passes of Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal, Assam- Burma routes on the eastern side, the valleys of the western side formed by the Brahmaputra- Gangetic plains and the sea route, by Bay of Bengal via Bengal and Burma (Choudhury, N.D., 1985, pp. 25-26). The migration which started thousands of years ago is continuing till present day. 3.2.Early Migrations As we trace the background of the people inhabiting Assam, we find literature referring to the earliest settlers. There is the mention of the Kiratas, Cinas, Nishada, and other tribes. When the Vedic Aryan people came to Assam, they encountered these communities. The literatures of ancient times also have some references about the physical features and skin colour of the people. Some anthropologists have used the term Nishada to denote the Australoids. The Kiratas were also mentioned in the ancient literatures. In The Ramayana, Mahabharata, and the Kalika Purana, references have been made to their yellow skin colour. These people were occupying the different regions of the Himalayas and the northeastern part of India. The Kiratas were regarded as Mongoloid people. The term ‘Kirata’ was first mentioned in the Yajurveda. The first ruler of ancient Kamarupa was Mahiranga Danav. He was a Kirata .The other rulers like Hatak Asur, Sambar Asur and Ratna Asur were also Kirata rulers and their subjects were all Kiratas .
