Theater of Enigma in Shakespeare’s England Michael West Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2017 Michael West All rights reserved ABSTRACT Theater of Enigma in Shakespeare’s England Michael West Theater of Enigma in Shakespeare’s England demonstrates the cognitive, affective, and social import of enigmatic theatrical moments. While the presence of other playgoers obviously shapes the experience of attending a play, I argue that deliberately induced moments of audience ignorance are occasions for audience members to be especially aware of their relations to others who may or may not share their bafflement. I explore the character of states of knowing and not-knowing among audience members and the relations that obtain among playgoers who inhabit these states. Further, I trace the range of performance techniques whereby playgoers are positioned in a cognitive no-man's land, lying somewhere between full understanding and utter ignorance—techniques that I collectively term “enigmatic theater.” I argue that moments of enigmatic theater were a dynamic agent in the formation of collectives in early modern playhouses. I use here the term “collective” to denote the temporary, occasional, and fleeting quality of these groupings, which occur during performance but are dissipated afterwards. Sometimes, this collective resembles what Victor Turner terms communitas, in which the normal societal divisions are suspended and the playgoers become a unified collectivity. At other times, however, plays solicit the formation of multiple collectives defined by their differing degrees of knowledge about a seeming enigma. -

The Department of History of The University of York. June, 2016. ABSTRACT. Families transact their relationships in a number of ways. Alongside and in tension with the emotional and practical dealings of family life are factors of an essentially moral nature such as loyalty, gratitude, obedience, and altruism. Morality depends on ideas about how one should behave, so that, for example, deciding whether or not to save a brother's life by going to bed with his judge involves an ethical accountancy drawing on ideas of right and wrong. It is such ideas that are the focus of this study. It seeks to recover some of ethical assumptions which were in circulation in early modern England and which inform the plays of the period. A number of plays which dramatise family relationships are analysed from the imagined perspectives of original audiences whose intellectual and moral worlds are explored through specific dramatic situations. Plays are discussed as far as possible in terms of their language and plots, rather than of character, and the study is eclectic in its use of sources, though drawing largely on the extensive didactic and polemical writing on the family surviving from the period. Three aspects of family relationships are discussed: first, the shifting one between parents and children, second, that between siblings, and, third, one version of marriage, that of the remarriage of the bereaved. -

THE FIRST QUARTO OF KING HENRY V The quarto text of Henry V is of unique importance. It has the authority of being transcribed by actors in Shakespeare’s own company as a record of their original staging of the play at the Globe in 1599. In this new edition Andrew Gurr argues that the Henry V quarto is probably the best surviving example of a Shakespeare playscript as it was actually performed. The speed with which it came to press only a year after its first staging marks its status as an official version of the play first seen by Elizabethan audiences. As a practical staging text it therefore does much to shed new light on what happened to scripts that the Shakespeare company bought from their resident playwright. The Henry V quarto is radically different from the 1623 First Folio version used in all other editions of the play. It is only half as long, eliminating entire scenes, transposing others, shortening long speeches and streamlining the text into something that could easily be put on as a two-hour performance. -

SYNOPSIS This thesis consists of an Introduction, followed by Part I (chapters 1-2) in which nineteenth- century criticism of the play is discussed, particular attention being paid to Helen Faucit's essay on Imogen, and its relationship to her playing of the role. In Part II the stags-history of Oymbcline in London is traced from 1785 to Irving's Lyceum production of 1896. Directions from promptbooks used by G-.P. Cooke, W.C. Macready, Helen Eaucit, and Samuel ±helps are transcribed and discussed, and in the last chapter the influence of Bernard Shaw on Ellen Terry's Imogen is considered in the light of their correspondence and the actress's rehearsal copies of the play. There are three appendices: a list of performances; transcriptions of two newspaper reviews (from 1843 and 1864) and one private diary (Gordon Crosse's notes on the Lyceum Gymbeline); and discussion of one of the promptbooks prepared for Charles Kean's projected production. -

PETR OSOLSOBĚ SIR THOMAS MORE: LESS COLLABORATIVE, MORE SHAKESPEAREAN Is Sir Thomas More, in all its fortuitous dramatic unity, the subtle symmetries of its characters, and its network of cross-references a collaborative work? As far as modern editors are concerned, there is a measure of agreement that the original play was the work of Anthony Munday and Henry Chettle, and was completed around 1592-94. Its manuscript contains a number of rewritten and additional passages, attributed to Chettle, Heywood, Dekker and Shakespeare. Gabrieli and Melchiori, in their admirable 1990 Revels edition of Sir Thomas More, support the assumption: playwriting at the time, at least for the public stage, was a collaborative practice between men of letters and actors and the men of the theatre, frequently on the basis of a ‘plot’ devised by a single author[. Besides,] all the extant or lost plays connected with Munday’s name [...] are written in collaboration. (Gabrieli and Melchiori 1990: 13) Munday’s claim to authorship is, furthermore, supported by his access to Harpsfield’s Life of More as well as to other rare recusant literature used in the play; Munday was the right-hand man of Richard Topcliffe, a notorious priest-catcher under Queen Elizabeth, and his close ‘collaborator’ in arresting and executing Roman Catholic priests Edmund Campion, Ralph Sherwin and Alexander Briant in 1581 (Gabrieli and Melchiori 1990: 8). Moreover, Munday was familiar with Latin tags and quotations which are abundant in the original text, always correct in spelling, grammar and syntax, owing to his daily usage of Latin during the months he spent as a spy in the Catholic English College in Rome from February to May 1579. -

Hamlet and the invention of Tragedy1 Helen Cooper UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, OXFORD The first thing that should be said about Hamlet is that he is a serial killer. He kills off a higher proportion of the speaking cast list, either directly with his own hand or indirectly, than any other Shakespearean character, including Richard III and Macbeth. To begin with, his victims include the entire Polonius family. He kills Polonius deliberately, though it is true that he believes him to be someone else at the time; but such an instance of mistaken identity, of killing B when one had set out with the intention of killing A, is not acceptable as an excuse for murder in a court of law. Laertes he kills with his own hand, though inadvertently; the text leaves open the opportunity, taken up in many productions, to have Hamlet engineer the change of swords deliberately as result of realizing that Laertes’ is unbated, but he cannot know that it is poisoned. Ophelia’s death he causes indirectly, but there can be no question but that he carries total moral responsibility for it, first tendering her affection, then proceeding through public humiliation to private violent abuse, and finally murdering her father. The First Quarto has Laertes make the double accusation of responsibility for the catastrophes to both Polonius and Ophelia explicit: Griefe upon griefe, my father murdered, My sister thus distracted: Cursed be his soule that wrought this wicked act.2 At no point, however, does Hamlet acknowledge his own role in bringing about her death, nor does he show any compunction over it. -

Schuler 2011 ABSTRACT This dissertation advances an account of how the genre of the chronicle history play enacts conciliar rule, by reflecting Renaissance models of counsel that predominated in Tudor political theory. As the texts of Renaissance political theorists and pamphleteers demonstrate, writers did not believe that kings and queens ruled by themselves, but that counsel was required to ensure that the monarch ruled virtuously and kept ties to the actual conditions of the people. Yet, within these writings, counsel was not a singular concept, and the work of historians such as John Guy, Patrick Collinson, and Ann McLaren shows that “counsel” referred to numerous paradigms and traditions. These theories of counsel were influenced by a variety of intellectual movements including humanist-classical formulations of monarchy, constitutionalism, and constructions of a “mixed monarchy” or a corporate body politic. Because the rhetoric of counsel was embedded in the language that men and women used to discuss politics, I argue that the plays perform a kind of cultural work, usually reserved for literature, that reflects, heightens, and critiques political life and the issues surrounding conceptions of conciliar rule. -

XXIV, no. 1/2, 1994, p. 185–202 ©UNESCO:International Bureau of Education, 2000 This document may be reproduced free of charge as long as acknowledgement is made of the source SIR THOMAS MORE (1478-1535) Keith Watson1 Sir Thomas More, or more accurately Saint Thomas More, since he was beatified by the Roman Catholic Church in 1886 and canonized as a saint in 1935, has been variously described as ‘the most attractive figure of the early sixteenth century’,2 ‘the voice of conscience’ of the early English Reformation3 and ‘one of the three greatest figures of the English Renaissance’.4 He was a scholar, lawyer, theologian, statesman and eventual martyr, whose influence was less on the development of the Reformation in England as upon creating a particular genre of futuristic and idealistic writing about society. His most famous book, Utopia, has come to be accepted as an everyday term in the English language and ‘utopian’ is often used to refer to an idea or concept that is idealistic and highly desirable, but which at the same time is completely impracticable and unrealistic. In terms of political science, both liberals and socialists lay claim to Thomas More as a founder of some of their ideas. There has even been a room in the Kremlin devoted to Thomas More because of his apparent espousal of communism as a political ideal.5 He was born into a period of intense political and social turmoil in English history as the House of York was overthrown by Henry Tudor in 1485 and as a new, ruthless dynasty was established, a dynasty that was to have a profound influence not only on the future shape of Church/State relations, and consequently on the development of parliamentary democracy in England and Wales, but above all on the future development of the Reformation in England. -

Many of these attributions are external, such as the explicit references on the title pages of The London Prodigal (1605), A Yorkshire Tragedy (1608), 1 Sir John Oldcastle (1619), The Troublesome Raigne of King John (1622), The Birth of Merlin (1662), and (more ambiguously) the initials on the title pages of Locrine (1595), Thomas Lord Cromwell (1602), and The Puritan (1607). Others, including Edward III, Arden of Faversham, Sir Thomas More, and many more, have been attributed much later on the basis of internal evidence. The first collection of disputed plays under Shakespeare’s name is usually understood to be the second impression of the Third Folio in 1664, which “added seven Playes, never before Printed in Folio.”1 Yet there is some evidence of an interest in dubitanda before the Restoration. The case of the Pavier quar- tos, which included Oldcastle and Yorkshire Tragedy among authentic plays and variant quartos in 1619, has been amply discussed elsewhere as an early attempt to create a canon of texts that readers would have understood as “Shakespeare’s,” despite later critical division of these plays into categories of “authentic” and “spu- rious,” which was then supplanted by the canon presented in the 1623 Folio.2 I would like to attend, however, to a much more rarely examined early collection of plays—Mucedorus, Fair Em, and The Merry Devil of Edmonton, all included in C. -
