Published for the first time more than a decade ago as a booklet in a modest cyclostyled shape by the Cultural Department of the Indonesian Embassy in India, it has been revised several times in Jakarta in the same form to keep up to date with new discoveries and current theories. Since it seemed to have filled a need felt by foreigners as well as Indonesians to obtain an elementary knowledge of Indonesia's past, it has been thought wise to publish it now in a printed form with the aim to reach a larger public than before. -
Representation of Pluralism in Literary History from Riau Island, Indonesia
Athens Journal of Philology - Volume 6, Issue 2 – Pages 83-104 Representation of Pluralism in Literary History from Riau Island, Indonesia By Mu᾽jizah One kind of the genre in literature is literary history, often called historiography traditional. In 17th--19th century this type of work was commonly found in the Riau Island manuscripts, especially in Pulau Penyengat. This area in ancient times became a scriptorium of Malay manuscripts. Several authors and scribes’ works, such as Raja Haji, Raja Ali Haji, Raja Ibrahim, and Salamah Binti Ambar and a descendant of Encik Ismail bin Datuk Karkun, were found in the region. Their works among others are Tuhafat An-Nafis, Silsilah Melayu, dan Bugis, and Hikayat Negeri Johor. In Indonesia, the manuscripts are kept in the National Library of Indonesia in Jakarta and Indrasakti Foundation in Riau Island. Some manuscripts among others were found in the Leiden University Library and KITLV Library in Netherlands. The historiography is useful to explore the source of historical knowledge, especially in search for understanding the process in the formation of Malay ethnic group with plural identities in Indonesia. The aim is to find representation of pluralism in the past Malay literary history which has contributed and strengthened nationalism. In the study we use qualititative research and descriptive methods of analysis. The research has found that the Malay ethnic group in Indonesia derived from various ethnic groups that integrated and became a nation with pluralities. According to the myth, the Malay ethnic group came from the unity between the upper-world or the angelic world and the under-world depicted as the marriage between Putri Junjung Buih and a human being. -

The historical approach was used in this study where the Heuristic activities were carried out to collect the main data. Document analysis of books, papers, journals and other relevant writings and interviews with customary figures were done. The results of the study found that the three ulamas came from Minangkabau and expertise in their respective fields and spread Islam. Datuk ri Bandang, who lived in Gowa had expertised in the field of jurisprudence, taught and propagated Islam by using Islamic sharia as its core teaching. -

BAB II. PASUKAN ELITE KERAJAAN MAJAPAHIT II.1 Landasan Teori II.1.1 Kerajaan Pada masa lalu Indonesia dihuni dengan macam – macam kerajaan diberbagai wilayah Indonesia, dari kerajaan Hindu, Buddha hingga Islam. Definisi Kerajaan adalah bentuk pemerintahan yang dipimpin oleh seorang aristocrat (bangsawan) yang jabatannya diperoleh dari garis keturunan penguasa, masa jabatan raja berlaku seumur hidup, kecuali raja itu sendiri yang mengundurkan diri (Suhelmi, 2007, h.233). Sistem pemerintahan kerajaan dapatdisebut monarki, arti kata monarki yang berasal dari Bahasa Yunani, kata mono yang artinya satu dan archeim yang artinya pemerintahan, jadi sistem pemerintahan monarki adalah suatu negara yang dipimpin oleh satu orang atau seorang raja (Rachmat, Sukidjo, Tukimo, 2002, h.26). Menurut (Mark), sistem pemerintahan kerajaan atau monarki adalah sistem pemerintahan yang tertua di dunia pada abad ke 3 SM, dilihat dari salah satu peradaban besar tertua di dunia yaitu bangsa Mesir Kuno yang pemimpin bangsanya adalah Fir’aun dengan sistem Monarki Absolut, raja pertama Mesir Kuno adalah Menes (https://www.ancient.eu/egypt, 29/01/2016, para 7). Pada periode kerajaan – kerajaan di Indonesia, kerajaan tidak dijadikan sebagai pusat pemerintahaan saja, tapi juga dijadikan tempat menyebarluaskan kepercayaan, dari agama Hindu, agama Buddha dan juga agama Islam. -

Pendekar Sanders had a very successful seminar in Ireland with Guru Liam McDonald on May 15-16, a very large and successful seminar at Guru Besar Jeff Davidson’s school on June 5-6 and he just returned from a seminar in England. The seminar at Guru Besar Jeff Davidson’s was video taped and the 2 volume set can be purchased through Raja Naga. Tape 1 consists of blakok (crane) training and Tape 2 has about 15 minutes more of blakok training followed by a very intense training session in various animal possessions including the very rare Raja Naga possession. Guru Besar Davidson and his students should be commended on their excellent portrayal of the art. Tape 1 is available to the general public, but due to the intense nature of tape 2 you must be a student. It is with great sadness that I must report that Guru William F. Birge passed away. William was a long time personal student of Pendekar Sanders and he will be missed by all of the people that he came into contact with. 1 Tribute to Guru William F. 1 Secularization of religion in Indonesia: From Custom to Pancasila and back to adat Stephen C. Headley (CNRS) [Version 3 Nov., 2008] Introduction: Why would anyone want to promote or accept a move to normalization of religion? Why are village rituals considered superstition while Islam is not? What is dangerous about such cultic diversity? These are the basic questions which we are asking in this paper. After independence in 1949, the standardization of religion in the Republic of Indonesia was animated by a preoccupation with “unity in diversity”. All citizens were to be monotheists, for monotheism reflected more perfectly the unity of the new republic than did the great variety of cosmologies deployed in the animistic cults. Initially the legal term secularization in European countries (i.e., England and France circa 1600-1800) meant confiscations of church property. Only later in sociology of religion did the word secularization come to designate lesser attendance to church services. It also involved a deep shift in the epistemological framework. It redefined what it meant to be a person (Milbank, 1990). Anthropology in societies where religion and the state are separate is very different than an anthropology where the rulers and the religion agree about man’s destiny. This means that in each distinct cultural secularization will take a different form depending on the anthropology conveyed by its historically dominant religion expression. For example, the French republic has no cosmology referring to heaven and earth; its genealogical amnesia concerning the Christian origins of the Merovingian and Carolingian kingdoms is deliberate for, the universality of the values of the republic were to liberate its citizens from public obedience to Catholicism. -

Art works such as paintings can also be called sign phenomena. The sign or symbol used by artists in creating a painting is the process of contemplation, feeling and artists' thoughts about the environment. The art installation by Aliansyah Chaniago entitled "Lanscape of Barus" conveys a message in a form of symbols hidden in the art work. That is the message about Aliansyah Chaniago’s memory on the Barus tree in his hometown. The method used to understand the value in Aliansyah's work is the method of interpretation analysis. Symbols that appear in the work of Aliansyah Caniago show the efforts of Aliansyah Caniago to provide information about the City of Barus and its glory, as well as the effects of excessive exploitation on natural richness in the future. Madras, India. Trade Contacts with the Indonesian Archipelago: 6th to 14th Centuries E. Edwards McKinnon Sea routes from South India and Sri Lanka to the Indonesian islands of Sumatra, Java, Bali, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and beyond appear to have been established by the beginning of the Christian era. Tangible evidence for such contacts appears in the form of Romano-Indian rouletted ware of the first or second centuries A.D. found in the Buni area of West Java (Walker & Santoso 1977) and, more recently, from controlled excavations at Sembiran on the north coast of Bali (Ardika 1989). An early bronze Buddha of Amaravati type from Sulawesi indicates possible connections with Sri Lanka by the c5. Evidence of Indianising influences, from Sanskrit inscriptions written in Tamil Grantha characters of the early/mid fifth century, appears in East Kalimantan and West Java. Monsoons: the crossing of the Oceans. The monsoon winds, which carried ships across the Indian Ocean, blow for six months of the year in one direction and for the other six in the opposite way. Although the changeover periods are somewhat squally, with unsteady winds, the monsoons themselves provide favorable conditions to blow ships from Arabia to China and back. From the end of October to January or February, the northeast monsoon carried ships from Java and Sumatra to Sri Lanka and South India in relatively fine weather. -

INTRODUCTION In this essay, I will review the various dynamic factors in the role of various major harbours, in the waters of the Selat Malaka (Straits of Melaka), Selat Sunda (Straits of Sunda) and the west coast of Sumatera from the c13 to the c17 CE. During the initial phase, between the c7 and c13 of this period, the rulers of Sriwijaya maintained hegemony over sailing and trade in the waters of the Selat Malaka, Selat Sunda and the Indian Ocean. During the second phase, between c13 to c17, it was the Islamic rulers of Samudera-Pasai and Aceh, Melak and Banten who controlled these waters. The Selat Malaka occupies a key role and is of prime importance in maritime history as an important sailing and trade route for merchants travelling between the Persian Gulf, the Indian Ocean and South China. It became the gateway for western merchants to enter southeast and eastern Asian waters and became the thorough fare for by the maritime Silk Route. During the above mentioned first phase of contact between east and west, from the beginnings of the Christian era until the c16, silk was an important, commodity brought from China to be traded in other regions.
