The GCTM platform is intended to support teachers as they promote learning through student engagement. This year’s conference program promises to offer ideas for the classroom where there is a balance of skill development, procedural fluency, conceptual understanding, and problem solving using appropriate technology. In addition to almost 200 sessions provided by classroom teachers and mathematics leaders, the program will include keynote addresses by State School Superintendent Kathy Cox, Glenda Lappan, Michigan State University, and Marcia Tate of Developing Minds Inc. LouAnn Lovin, coauthor with John Van de Walle of Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics, will lead the list of featured speakers. To promote active learning and discourse in the classroom, the program will also feature John Zola leading workshops on Socratic Seminar and Scored Discussions, and Teresa Barry guiding participants in understanding and using questioning strategies. The program will also feature Melodee Davis of the Georgia Department of Education Office of Assessment Services. She will be sharing results from the statewide testing programs as well as answering questions about test design. New activities for this year include an Open House, a set of pre-conference options from 3:00 – 5:00 PM on Wednesday. Experienced educators will provide a technology open house for conference attendees interested in an introduction to using graphing calculators, Geometer’s Sketchpad, spreadsheets, or interactive white boards. During the same time period, seasoned teacher-leaders will coach participants as they work through tasks and will share tips for incorporating tasks in classroom instruction. There will be tasks appropriate for each grade band: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Unlike the sessions on Thursday and Friday, the Open House will be ―drop-in‖ style. You are invited to come when you can, experiment with tasks and/or technology, ask questions, and leave when you are satisfied (or at 5 PM, whichever comes first). If you plan to get acquainted with Geometers’ Sketchpad, please bring a laptop computer. If you plan to work on a task, you might want to bring a colleague to serve as your partner. Recreational Activities will also be available during the 3-5 PM time period. The Georgia Mathematics Conference depends on the teachers and educators who provide their time and expertise for its success. The GMC and GCTM Boards extend their sincere appreciation to all those people willing to volunteer to help make each year’s conference great! ~ 3 ~ Conference Highlights Wednesday Kathy Cox, State Superintendent of Schools, will kickoff our conference at the opening session. This session includes the GCTM Business Meeting. It will conclude with door prizes. Following the opening session, enjoy music and complimentary refreshments at the EMC Senior Pavilion. This event is sponsored by Holt-McDougal. An alternate activity, a movie with popcorn, will be available in International Paper. Thursday The famous GCTM Mile Fun Run will begin at 4:45 PM at the Bankers Building. Come walk or jog this popular 5K ( 3.14 mile) fun run! Everyone is invited to participate – no pre-registration is required! Fun Run souvenir t-shirts provided by Carnegie Learning.
