Alaska Baptist Resource Network in Sunday worship average attendance was 4123, which is down from 4265 the previous year. Average Bible Study attendance was recorded as 2584, down from 2993 the previous year. Our numbers are impacted by the pandemic and we expect to see those numbers rise in the coming years. We need to continue reaching, teaching and keeping new members and making a diligent effort to reach out to believers who have not returned to our churches. How does your church keep up with the important accomplish- ments that are made through the year? I would hope that every church is tracking attendance, baptism and other important indica- tors of God’s working. One way to do this is through the Annual Church Profile (ACP), which will help you gauge how your church is doing. It has greater implications that involve funding for state and associational work if you post the report. Please make every effort to report your statistics. It truly was a good year to have so many report. If there are questions as to how to do this, call Debra Long in our office. She will help you. There are churches that have been doing this for years and it is easy to get that data through our office. If you want to explore possibilities for evangelistic outreach and church development, contact me. I will be glad to help your church develop training, events and infrastructure to enhance your ministry efforts. Churches can do simple things to increase their evangelistic effectiveness of events. I would love to help your church learn more about this. One of the best ways to see increases in evangelism is to appoint someone in your church to work with every ministry group to help with evangelism efforts. Our national SBC emphasis is on “Who’s Your One.” Every church was sent a kit to help with this emphasis. I suggest you run this emphasis in short spurts or leading up to an event several times through the year and done several years in a row. The State Evangelism Conference (SEC) is always encouraging and inspirating. I would love see each church enlist an evange- lism leader and send them to the conference as part of your church training. Our speakers and leaders for the conference do an amazing job of sharing God’s Word and challenging us as a convention. The SEC offers something for just about everyone. We will have a great conference next year, February 3-4, 2022. It will be held at First Baptist Church, Eagle River. Vacation Bible School is always a big emphasis in our church- es. There were 3936 total registered in clubs throughout the state in 2019. 2020 saw only 643 students registered for summer clubs. COVID hit us very hard. Thank you, Alaska Baptists, for entrusting me with this opportunity. A lot has changed since last Sep- tember when we were not certain we would be able to meet. We now have a better understand- ing of the Covid-19 Tom Hoffman virus, and enough of President our people have either Alaska Baptist Resource Network recovered from the virus or have been vaccinated that we are able to re-engage without reservation and continue the good fight. Looking back, we see how, in short order, we drastically altered the way we were doing things and learned new ways to stay connected with our people. New technologies (or at least new to us non-techy types) have allowed us to expand the reach of our ministry well beyond our regular congre- gations. Live-stream and Zoom have become all too familiar and although they can frustrate, these tools have helped. This last year many people attended our churches seeking Truth and Life answers when everything “normal” had either been turned upside down or fallen under attack. It reminds us God is at work in all things. Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. The pandemic has not been a good thing. It has caused a lot of pain, suffering, loss, and grief in the world. But through it, God has awakened in many a desire to know Him and find real, substantive answers for life. I believe the Holy Spirit is giving boldness in the faith for God’s people to be more visible and vocal witnesses for Jesus Christ. After praying for the disciples, Jesus prayed in John 17:20-21 for those who would believe through their word. Specifically, He prayed for us. His prayer was that we would be united and that we would be one as He and the Father are One and that we would be one with Him! There have been many challenges to true believers continuing in unity. If one were to base the future of the church on polls, current trend analysis, or mere speculation, one might sup- pose the church, like the rest of the world, is destined to spiral into division, discord, and disintegration. But the Lord’s desire for unity in His church must prevail. We are commanded to love one anoth- er and show the world we are His disciples! This requires that we choose to love, esteem, encourage, pray for, support, and cooperate with one another in obedience to Christ, to the glory of God, the advancement of His kingdom, and the edification of His church! Paul’s words in 2 Timothy 4:5 seem most appropriate for our day of daily distractions. “But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” Finally, Alaska Baptists keep on preaching the gospel! Stand Firm and Win Life!

18 Alaska Baptist Resource Network 76th Annual Meeting Book of Reports Birchwood Behavioral Health Report Birchwood Behavioral Health has experienced a year of growth and change. We have been blessed to support more than 100 families over the last year. Our programs have helped families, individuals and couples work through some very challenging times. Birch- wood has an amazing staff that has stepped up to meet each challenge. We have grown stronger and ex- panded our outreach by adding more staff Sarah Cambridge members to meet Executive Director the needs of our Birchwood Behavioral Health community. The physical, emotional and spiritual needs of our fami- lies have intensified over the last year. The lack of social and emotional connection has led to many needing to reach out for help. Our families are struggling to build healthy connections, to trust these connections and to have faith in God’s plan for us. Birchwood has been a place for families to get the support they need and rebuild their relationships with family mem- bers, their community and with God. Due to the overwhelming need of our children, clinicians have now been tasked with finding home placements for our children after completing our program. We have children that have no family or community that can take them into their home after completing the residential program. There are currently six clients that have no place to go when they have completed the program at Birchwood. These children have worked hard to start a better life and are being told that no one is able to take them into their home and care for them. Please reach out to me if you or someone you know is willing to open your homes for these children. They are in need of homes that can provide a safe and healthy environment—a place so they can build healthy relationships and thrive with the love and support I know we can provide for them. Birchwood Behavioral Health could not support the needs of these children and families without support from our faith- ful donors. We cannot thank you enough for the prayers, time and monetary gifts you have given our clients and staff. They are appreciated more than we can ever express. As we move forward, your continued prayers, input, ideas and donations are critical for us to continue spreading our mission with fami- lies throughout Alaska. We have faith in God’s plan for each of us. We continue to bring hope and healing to individuals and families by restor- ing wholeness in a therapeutic environment through the grace of Jesus Christ. Birchwood moves ahead with faith and grace that God has given us so we can continue to meet the Alaskan community’s needs physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Chaplain Jim Duncan, Department Of Corrections (DOC) state chaplain says that Alaska Institutions are now open for chaplains and volunteers to minister once again. We are waiting for an orientation class to be brought up to date on security changes at Goose Creek Correctional Center (GCCC). TUMI Classes will be resuming in- side GCCC and we have received authorization from Prison Fellow- ship to start additional TUMI sites in 2 other Institutions in Alaska. One new development in Prison Ministry is that FRF has asked DOC to take over the Chaplaincy Ministry at the Port McKenzie Correctional Farm since the passing of Chaplain Barney Swaney. Our request is being considered at this time. I fully expect to have this opportunity for myself, and others at FRF who are engaged in Prison Ministry. With the need for growth of FRF comes the dilemma of what to do or where to go next. A desire of our heart is to open a Euthus Recovery House facility for residential rehab from addiction. In this facility individuals could come in directly off the street, detox and recover from addiction in a Christian discipleship program that will give them the tools they need to be clean and stay clean. A second part of the dilemma is how to grow the ministry by adding a recovery component to ministry that will be a separate recovery group study led by one of our leaders who is experienced in teaching success over life controlling issues.

Alaska Baptist Resource Network 76th Annual Meeting Book of Reports 21 Education Report Normally a Wayland spring grad- uation would not be such a huge achievement, but this year it was! That is because this past year was certainly far from normal, as we were forced to conduct the previous two graduations virtually on Zoom with only one person (the dean) in the auditorium on the camera. Hence, the April 2021 graduation ceremony was a tremendous moral victory! With Sylvia Rylander play- ing every- Dr. Eric Ash thing on her Executive Director/Dean bells—El- Wayland Baptist University gar’s Pomp Anchorage Campus and Circum- stance, the National Anthem, a beautiful musical selection, and the reces- sional march—we were able to conduct three graduation cere- monies with limited numbers and finally recognize our graduates and their families in person at Wayland. Hurray! Likewise, in Fairbanks/North Pole we were also able to celebrate graduation in person, praise the Lord!! Like so many other colleges and universities, Wayland has faced and overcome many challenges this past year. We conduct- ed classes only on Zoom for part of the year, and then switched to a mix of residence and virtual classes. Our Wayland employ- ees worked remotely for part of the year, and then eventually were able to come back to working full-time in our facilities. Through it all, not once did we simply cancel classes due to the COVID pandemic—and we were blessed to have had very few students or employees at either our Anchorage or our Fairbanks campus locations become ill from the virus. Because Wayland was already well-engaged in on-line teach- ing, we were able to accommodate all the COVID protocols and other mandates while maintaining a viable teaching program. We also transitioned from 11-week terms to two 8-week sessions per term, a plan that had been in place well before COVID hit. Wayland was also well-positioned to sponsor meetings in person and on Zoom for the Anchorage Evangelical Pastors Association, and it was wonderful to see the Alaska Baptist Resource Network also step up to fulfill this need. Together we helped connect pastors and churches across Anchorage. Whether at the ABRN annual convention, the Evangelism Conference, the Women on Mission celebration, or the weekly ABRN Zoom prayer meetings with Baptist pastors, Wayland has been grateful beyond words for the strong show of support from Dr. Randy Covington and ABRN staff members. It is not overly dramatic to state that this report reflects by far the most challenging year Wayland has faced in more than 35 years in Alaska. Regardless of when we may all return to normal or perhaps to a new normal, Wayland continues to remain stead- fast in its mission of spreading the love and light of Jesus Christ to university students in Alaska. We wholeheartedly embrace the theme, “Stand Firm—Win Life” from Luke 21:19.
