Now in its 31st year, the collegiate men’s soccer tournament hosted by Duke continues its strong tradition this year as the John Rennie Nike Invitational. In what started in 1982 by longtime head coach John Rennie as the Duke Soccer Invitational, the tournament has undergone scheduling changes, title sponsor moves and the general evolution of collegiate soccer and ultimately became named for its founder as the John Rennie Nike Invitational this year. Over the course of history, the weekend-long event in Durham, N.C., has featured some of the best players and coaches in the college game. Participants in the tournament have gone on to become Olympians as well as play and coach in World Cups as well as in the professional ranks at home and abroad. Rennie, then in his fourth season as the leader of the Blue Devils soccer program, knew amidst the soccer boom that started in the 1980s was a place for a tournament featuring a few of the top teams in the country. And Duke was the perfect place after he successfully guided the team to national prominence in his first few seasons. In 1982, the Duke Invitational began with American University, Appalachian State and Georgia State squaring off. Duke took home the first two titles and in 1984, Met Life seized the opportunity to take advantage of the growing game and signed on as the title sponsor in 1983. Rennie welcomed his first west coast school to the tournament in 1984 as UCLA, under legendary Sigi Schmid who currently is the head coach of the Seattle Sounders, became the first team to unseat the Blue Devils as the tournament champion with an overtime victory over South Florida and a 2-0 win over the host Blue Devils. The newest addition came in 1985 as NC State joined the event on an annual basis and bolstered the invitational with a pair of ACC powers. The 1986 Met Life Classic gave an early glimpse, which still remains firmly entrenched in Rennie’s memory, into the talent of Rennie’s squad that captured Duke’s first NCAA Championship. The Blue Devils cruised to the title with 5-0 trouncings of Connecticut and Hartwick and jump-started Duke’s run to the NCAA title. The great teams, coaches and players continued to roll through Durham year in and year out as the likes of future United States National Team Head Coach Steve Sampson, U.S. internationals Tab Ramos, Brian Maissoneuve, Pablo Mastroeni and John Kerr were among the many talented players and coaches to participate in what quickly became one of the nation’s premier collegiate soccer tournaments. Sampson came to Durham in 1989 as the head coach of Santa Clara and beat Duke and NC State, just Duke’s third loss in 15 contests, to start its undefeated national championship season with a bang. Sampson eventually went on to become the United States National Team Coach in the 1998 World Cup and led the Los Angeles Galaxy to the MLS Cup Championship in 2005. The 1990s featured Indiana twice, including in 1997 when the Hoosiers advanced to the NCAA Championship game, that included future professionals such as Dema Kovalenko and Nick Garcia. Traditional powers UCLA, Akron, Creighton and UConn also joined the fray in the decade and after one year with Foot Locker as the title sponsor, Rennie signed on with Adidas in 1998 to present the Adidas Soccer Classic for the next 10 seasons. Finally, when Rennie retired with a 36-year career record of 454-207-48, one of Duke’s own and Met Life Classic participant John Kerr returned to Durham to take the reins of the Blue Devil program. Kerr, using a strong relationship with former teammate and Nike representative Tom Kain, brought in the newest sponsor to make it the Duke Nike Classic in 2008. And finally with agreement from Nike, Kerr and Duke honored Rennie’s contributions to the collegiate soccer community in the best way possible by renaming it the John Rennie Nike Invitational. In 2012, Duke looks to capture its 17th Duke Invitational title as Santa Clara returns for the first time since it won the crown in 1989 and Delaware makes its debut in the weekend-long affair. Indiana’s Brian Maissoneuve helped guide the NC State’s Pablo Mastroeni was among the early Duke’s Andrew Wenger and the 2012 MLS Hoosiers to the 1993 Met Life Classic title. college stars to play in the tournament and go No. 1 draft pick was the latest college star to Maissoneuve, the 1994 Hermann Trophy winner, onto an impressive international and professional participate in what is currently the John Rennie played for the U.S. in the 1996 Olympics and the career.
