Good afternoon and a warm and hospitable welcome is extended to all involved with West Auckland Town to the newly named ‘Bishop Auckland Brewery Stadium’ for this Northern League Division One fixture.

There is no doubting we are right in the middle of a very tough run of games, however there is also no doubting that the performance levels in the last three games have been much improved. The team have looked much more like a unit with Andy and Ian clearly having a positive impact on the squad they have inherited. There are obvious deficiencies in certain areas of the team, and I believe it may well be a few more weeks until they can start bringing in their own players which will hopefully coincide with an upturn in fortunes and points on the board - however another improved showing today and who knows?!

Its now almost a decade to the day since we were given the keys to Heritage Park and I think it is fair to say we would all have been disappointed to be told back then that after 10 years of moving into our new permanent home we would be in this predicament on the pitch. In todays edition of the matchday programme I have started to give my own account of ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’ from our time to date at this ground. Over the coming weeks I hope to get some of our supporters memories and reflections from the last 10 years so keep an eye out for this….

I am always looking for ways to keep the content of the matchday programme fresh and innovative so if any supporters have any ideas or feel they can contribute please come and speak to me or e-mail me at [email protected]

Enjoy the game, be sensible and keep everyone safe!

Gav FROM THE CHAIR…

I would like to welcome Andy Toman and Ian McGuckin to BAFC and having both played for the club before they know we shouldn’t be where we are in the league. These guys are experienced coaches and hope it isn’t too long before they start getting us climbing the league table. It will take 5/6 weeks I think to turn things around for the new management team and to get the players playing how they want. Midweek training starts next week, in addition to the midweek league game at and that should help.

It has been a hectic couple of weeks, and I want to thank everyone who has supported me with team selections and the players. I also want to thank club captain Chris Winn, especially, for all the support he has given.

We fought hard against to no avail but against Guisborough we were up for a game and we got a point out of it which was pleasing, showing we were never going to give up until that final whistle! The Shildon game was always going to be a difficult task and they are a good settled side - which is exactly what we want at the club. Tuesday night’s game at Hebburn was a good performance and we could have got something out of it, but it wasn’t to be. It was also pleasing to see us scoring two goals from open play!

This afternoon we welcome West Auckland Town - although the 150 crowd limit is awful for all clubs impacted we hope we can get the gate allowance back up again so that we have enough people through the turnstiles to cover all of our overheads at least.

FROM THE MANAGER…

Good afternoon and welcome to the Bishop Auckland Brewery Stadium for today’s game v West Auckland Town.

We have a few injuries at present following Wednesday evening’s defeat at Hebburn Town and that means we will need to bring in more young lads from the U18 and U23 set ups, which isn't ideal or an excuse either.

We need to pull together in this difficult run of fixtures but to be fair the lads have responded to our style in a short space of time.

We haven't had a training session yet and have been trying to coach within the two games we've had and that hasn't been easy. Some of the younger players are a little naïve and when you play the top teams this makes it even more difficult.

We will keep persevering and myself and Ian ‘Gucky’ McGuckin will weather the storm and take any criticism that comes our way but one thing I'm certain of we will get it right!

Regards Andy Toman MATCH REPORT: 30/09/20

Northern League Division One – Bishop Auckland 2-2 Guisborough Town Bishop Auckland: Liversedge, Marshall, Summers, Potter, Dixon, Lines, Goldsborough, Morris, Nixon, Hogan, Parnaby

Guisborough Town: Steavens, Robinson, McAvoy, Marshall, Guru, Rowbotham, Martin, Young, Bartliff, Coleman, McNeill

Steve Coulthard and Chris Winn signed off from their brief time in charge of team affairs with an encouraging, determined draw on a drizzly night at the Bishop Auckland Brewery Stadium.

After a brief delay when the floodlights had to be ‘re-booted’ Bishops enjoyed a good solid first half and certainly enjoyed the better of the play, confidently spraying the ball around on the slick surface. Both sides exchanged successful penalties with the ‘Priorymen’ obliging first when a mistimed tackle from a Bishops defender was punished and the experienced Robinson calmly sent Liversedge the wrong way, 17 minutes on the clock.

Less than 15 minutes later the scores and penalty count were levelled up when a swinging cross was clearly handled by a Guisborough defender giving Morris the chance to fire his spot kick to the keepers left and just inside the post. Two minutes later Bishops almost went in front when Hogan had a low shot that went agonisingly wide of the far post. HT 1-1.

The visitors were expected to come out in the 2nd half improved and they did just that, regaining the lead on 47 minutes, the ball first striking the post, the follow up being blocked and then Bartliff making no mistake from 15 yards, lashing into the roof of the net.

With confidence obviously low in the Bishops camp it was encouraging that within 7 minutes a flowing attacking move resulted in Parnaby being left in acres of space after Regan Nixon cleverly dummied the ball for him to fire home.

Liam Potter was punished for dissent with a spell in the ‘sin bin’ and Bishops began to hold on as Guisborough pushed the midfield and defence deeper allowing the red and whites to dominate possession. A few nervous moments came and went but the determination displayed by all XI left on the pitch made for a hard earned but well-deserved share of the spoils and the first point on the board after 5 league games. FT 2-2. ATT 148.

MATCH REPORT: 03/10/20

Northern League Division One – Shildon 3-0 Bishop Auckland Shildon: Newbrook, Heywood, White, Vaulks, Liddle, Naylor, Trotter, Palmer, Thexton, Posthill, Matthews

Bishop Auckland: Liversedge, Marshall, Summers, Potter, Lines, Goldsborough, Connor, Morris, Winn, Hogan, Parnaby

Persistent rain greeted both sides but the Dean Street pitch looked lush and slick for the start of Andy Toman and Ian McGuckin’s management reign. The duo didn’t get the start they must of wished for and only 4 minutes had been played when Thexton’s deft flick in the box set up Liddle to lash into the roof of the net to give the home side the lead.

Shildon had to replace Thexton midway through the first half as he clashed heads with Bishop defender Summers who also departed. His replacement Sweet almost extended the lead when a chip over Liversedge appeared to rebound off the post and then stayed out despite the effort of the striker near the goal line.

Bishops got into some good attacking positions - despite Chris Winn now operating in the heart of defence due to Summers going off injured - but frustratingly failed to test Newbrook, a prime example being when Parnaby was played in down the right side and instead of driving low and hard at goal was caught in two minds and the opportunity was wasted as his attempted pass was intercepted. HT 1-0.

For the first quarter of the 2nd half Bishops were still well in the game despite Shildon looking the more likely to get another goal, and on the hour mark a low cross was tapped in by Matthews.

There was still belief that Bishops could get a lifeline back into the game and a rare spell of pressure came to an end after a succession of dangerous corners, Winn finding the ball break to him but unable to adjust his feet quick enough to hit the target.

With everyone in attendance now well and truly soaked and the game just into added on time Michael Sweet put the gloss on the score line for the ‘Railwaymen’ when he latched onto Palmers through ball and gave Liversedge no chance. Probably a little harsh on Bishops with the spirit and determination shown but the quality in the final third was distinctly lacking. FT 3-0. ATT 150. ACTION SHOTS

10 YEARS AT HERITAGE PARK

‘The good, the bad & the ugly’ by Gavin Hadden

As the heading suggests to sum up our first decade at Heritage Park there has been some good, plenty of bad and occasionally a little bit of ‘ugly’ both on and off the pitch. Goals galore, the odd big win, too many heavy defeats – it’s fair to say its not been the fortress we all hoped for after spending 8 years homeless after selling Kingsway. Today’s edition focuses on the good parts as I think we all need a little bit of a pick-me-up right now!

‘The Good’

A chilly Sunday in October 2010 when attendance was by invitation only, Heritage Park was officially opened. Sir John Hall ‘cut the ribbon’ alongside chairman at the time Terry Jackson (pictured, right). St Mary’s Juniors were invited to let two blue balloons off on the pitch (pictured, left) before the first ever game was contested between supporters – I fondly remember my wonder goal at the ‘open end’, a curling shot that dipped over John Cowey and into the top corner. The rest of the afternoon was spent drinking the bar dry and speculating on what was to follow.

The 2012-13 Season was the culmination of all the good work Colin Myers had done from 4 years previously when he came in with Bishops at the foot of the Northern League table (Sound familiar?!!). A team containing the likes of Peter Jefferies, Andrew Johnson, Chris Lawson (pictured below, in action v ) and Steve Salvin (pictured right, with the DCC) had the potential to take us to the next level. Heritage Park witnessed some memorable occasions - not least the sell-out league opener v ground sharing tenants Darlington - and although a 6th place finish in the league probably doesn’t do that team enough justice a first trophy in 10 years (Durham Challenge Cup) was surely a sign progress was being made… The FA Cup run to the final qualifying round in 2016 saw us put higher league opposition Ossett Albion and Trafford (Pictured, below right) to the sword at Heritage Park before a superbly disciplined performance at Farsley Celtic meant the 4th Qualifying Round was reached for the first time in 16 years. A side set up to play attractive attacking football on the newly installed turf complete with state- of-the-art drainage at Heritage Park (pictured left, built in sprinkler system) made for a buzz around the place in the opening months of the season. Stockport County away was a step too far but again surely this could be the taster of better things to come…

Ian Chandler’s first season in charge saw a total contrast to the season previous as he assembled a team sprinkled with skill and pace over the summer of 2018. From August to February 2019 Bishops were looking like the real deal with a string of emphatic wins at Heritage Park such as 4-0 v Whickham, 5-2 v Ryhope CW, 6-1 V Seaham, 5-0 v Whitley Bay and 5-1 v North Shields to mention a few. A 3rd place finish was achieved – the best while at Heritage Park. There was also a never say die attitude to the team, demonstrated during the 3-3 draw at home to Consett, probably the most dramatic comeback we have witnessed so far at Heritage Park – Hoganson and Ryder with the two goals in the closing minutes rescuing a point, the latter’s strike getting the ‘tin shed’ well and truly rocking.

West Auckland Town History…

West Auckland have a unique history - they are double World Cup winners! In 1909 and 1911 the mining side travelled the lengthy and expensive journey to and beat their club opponents to win the , also dubbed football's first World Cup.

The Club was founded in 1893 and played their first matches in the Auckland and District League. The following years saw 'West' move around several local leagues until in 1909 they were elected into the Northern league for the first time.

The famous 'World Cup' exploits which saw 'West' win the Sir Thomas Lipton trophy outright after a second trip to Italy in 1911 also caused them extreme financial problems. This resulted in the club being disbanded in 1912 and the 'World Cup' being sold to pay off debts.

Two years later they were back in business and spent the following 20 years moving around the local leagues including a single season, in 1919, in the Northern League, changing their name to St. Helens Utd, for that season only. In 1934 they were once again elected to the Northern League, taking the place of Esh Winning and have retained membership ever since.

The club's first honours were gained in 1960, winning the League championship by two points from newcomers Whitley Bay. The success was due to a good start to the season and to fine teamwork, for which their reputation was beginning to grow. The same season saw them reach the quarter final stage of the F.A. Amateur Cup drawing 1-1 at home but losing 2-0 at Hendon.

1961 was probably the best season in the Club's history, not only was the Northern League championship won by four points from near neighbours and archrivals Bishop Auckland, 'West' also reached the final of the F.A. Amateur Cup losing 2-1 to Walthamstow Avenue at Wembley. For the next 30 years 'West' had very barren times until 1991 when they won the 2nd Division championship gaining promotion to the 1st Division, where they remained for six seasons until relegation in 1996/97. 'West' quickly bounced back in 1997/98 when they finished runners up. 1998/99 was a very exciting season in the Club's history when they reached the 1st Round proper of the F.A. Cup for the third time, (Barnsley 1959 & Stockport 1961) with an away tie against Yeovil Town. After a 2-2 draw at Yeovil and a 1-1 draw at West Auckland, a penalty shoot-out saw Yeovil through. The Club also finished a credible 5th in the League that season as they did also in 1999/2000 and 2005/06.

David Bayles took charge in the summer of 2005 and led the side to 5th place in his first season (2005/06) and then 6th place in the following season. 2007/08 began with an FA Cup run that saw West within minutes of a place in the final qualifying round of the FA Cup before defeat in a replay to Bamber Bridge. After his shock resignation, Lee Ellison had a short lived spell as manager before Phil Owers took over and steadied the side and led them to escape the drop zone.as the new player manager. However after performances slumped to a worryingly low and 10 games without a win, Ray Gowan came in but even he was unable to arrest the slide and promptly resigned at the end of the campaign

Owers departed early in the 08/09 season with Brian Fairhurst appointed as Manager. Exciting news filtered in throughout the summer of 2009. Firstly, West Auckland were able to retain their First Division status due to Sunderland Nissan folding. The Club then received sensational news that, to celebrate their Centenary of winning the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, Juventus had agreed to a re- match in Italy. Shortly afterwards Hartlepool legend Brian Honour was appointed the new manager in the hot seat. Brian and his successor Wilf Constantine struggled to get West back on track and both had short lived spells in charge. For the third season in a row, a third manager was appointed - Peter Dixon arrived on Monday 7th December 2009, swapping a promotion push with Crook for a relegation battle. West stunned the Northern League with some superb results and finished the season in a scarcely believable 16th place despite having a -41- goal difference and 5 points from 19 matches when Peter took the reins. 2010/11 saw substantial progress made on and off the field. Peter Dixon’s side broke Club records for their highest ever points tally on the way to finishing in 6th. There were many memorable results including wins over champions Spennymoor Town, runners up Consett and FA Vase treble winners Whitley Bay. They also came close to causing a shock at Conference North highfliers Workington in the FA Cup. Although it culminated in a case of so near but so far, West had a quite extraordinary campaign in 2011/12 that saw them play at Wembley in the FA Vase Final. However hopes of elusive silverware were dashed in a 2-0 defeat to Dunston. They also finished as runners up in two more competitions, being pipped to the title by Spennymoor and losing 4-1 by Team Northumbria days after their Wembley appearance. The 2012/13 season saw West bow out early on in the FA Vase in a rematch of the previous year final whilst in the League a poor end meant West slipped down to fourth late on. The 2013/14 season saw West return to Wembley in the FA Vase final, this time against Sholing FC, a 1-0 defeat solely down to the heroics of the opposition goalkeeper and the inability of the West forwards to score. Also a productive FA cup run to the 3rd qualifying round where west were knocked out by Hednesford. West finished 5th in a season which saw them play 18 league fixtures in the final 4 weeks after a season extension was rejected. Barely two months into the 2014/15, Peter Dixon was dismissed as manager following increased tension between manager and board, that season saw 3 permanent manager and 2 caretakers, and the season saw Stephen Skinner leave at the end of the season. June 2015 and West were manager less again, Up stepped former Boro striker Andy Campbell, who had just lead Norton and Stockton Ancients to promotion and success in the second division cup. He hastily rebuilt the team & finished mid table with 50 points to easily avoid relegation. to look towards. Andy started his second season with Richie Storrs but after 10 games & only 1 win they stood down. They were replaced with a joint management team of Darren Williams, & Steven Skinner. This was Skinner’s 2nd time at West. At the halfway point of the season it was decided to dispense with the services of Darren Williams & the management of the team became the sole responsibility of Steve Skinner. Skinner was dismissed towards the end of 2016-7 & West avoided relegation by winning 3 points in their final game of that season. Gary Forrest & Stuart Niven were approached to take over the reins at West which they did & rebuilt for the 2017-18 campaign. The 2018/19 season saw West have a remarkable run in cup competitions, reaching the Quarter-finals of the FA Vase (losing 2-0 to eventual winners Chertsey Town) and impressively ending a 56-year wait to clinch their third League Cup title after beating Newcastle Benfield 4-3 on penalties at Seaham Red Star’s Ferguson Motor Repairs Stadium. Unfortunate events in the following season saw Gary Forrest’s side witness an unforgettable and unprecedented 2019/20 campaign as it was declared null and void due to the global coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, in the EBAC Northern League Division One, West finished ninth with 42 points from 29 matches played.

West Auckland Town FC 2020-21… GOALKEEPERS Sam Guthrie Sam has arrived at West on loan from side Gateshead until the end of the 2020/21 campaign. Guthrie spent a brief spell on trial with the Heed before making the move to the International Stadium official in 2019. Sam made his first West appearance and claimed a debut clean sheet in the 2-0 win over North Shields.

Tom Flynn Tom is an experienced goalkeeper. His previous clubs include Scottish side Cowdenbeath where he made 85 appearances and Whitley Bay.

Jonny Ball Jonny signed as an alternative following a number of eye-catching appearances in pre- season, including a 4-1 win over Crook Town. Spent four seasons at Ryhope CW.

Liam Hegarty Defender Liam was signed for West after being released from Middlesbrough. Right back Liam joined Middlesbrough U17’s and progressed to the U23’s. He also has had two appearances for Scotland U17’s.

Previous clubs include Darlington, Durham City, Jarrow Roofing, Blyth Spartans, Shildon & South Shields.

Chris Hunter Manager Gary Forrest knows Chris from his Shildon days before his move to Darlington at the start of the 2014-15 season and helped them win the EvoStik First Division North play- offs, and the EvoStik Premier League. He made 160 appearances for Darlington and produced some great defensive displays at both right back and centre of defence. Chris moved to South Shields after being released from Darlington.

Jamie Harwood Jamie is no stranger to Gary as they teamed up together while Gary was Shildon manager, Jamie left Shildon at the back end of last season and joined second division side Crook Town.

Evan Horwood Billingham born defender Evan started his career with Sheffield United’s youth system progressing through the academy and reserves. After short loan spells at Stockport, Scunthorpe and Chester, he finally settled at Carlisle with 77 appearances and Hartlepool where he scored five goals in 123 appearances. Evan is also no stranger to Wembley, playing there in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final for Carlisle and the FA Trophy with Grimsby.

Michael Hoganson Michael is another player to join from near neighbours Bishop Auckland. The left back has some experience in the EFL Championship with Derby County and in 2013, made his competitive first team debut in a 3-1 win against Middlesbrough as an 87th minutes substitute before starting in a goalless draw over Wolves. After being released by the Rams in 2014, he returned to the North East to play non-League football and has had spells at Newcastle Benfield, Spennymoor and Bishop Auckland.

Danny Mitton Danny is no stranger to coach Brian Atkinson, while they both were at Newton Aycliffe. Danny was a long serving centre half and played In Aycliffe’s DC Cup triumph against West Auckland under Peter Dixon.

MIDFIELDERS Marc Ellison Marc Ellison is known by manager Gary Forrest as he signed him when at Shildon. Marc, aged 28, a Hartlepool lad was signed for Sunderland at the young age of 8. From there he went onto Middlesbrough before signing for Hartlepool United full time. From Hartlepool he had a spell playing in Sweden until 2011 when he returned to Shildon, Darlington, Spennymoor, Crook and finally back to Shildon in 2014. Lewis Dodds Lewis has 6 Northern League title medals during his career, 4 with Spennymoor and 1 apiece with Durham City and Shildon. Among his vast collection of winning medals and trophies is a FA Vase medal he won while with Spennymoor in 2013 when they beat Kent league team Tunbridge Wells 2-1 at Wembley. Lewis had 7 seasons with Spennymoor and played over 250 games, he was named “Player of the Year” in the 2012/13 season. He joined Shildon after signing from Spennymoor in September 2015 and went on to make 122 Appearances scoring 8 goals and winning his latest Northern League title medal in the 2015/16 season.

Kyle Fryatt Started his career at Middlesbrough youths, before going on to play for Whitby Town, Whitley Bay, Shildon, Durham and more recently Bishop Auckland, who he joined in June 2018. Kyle is no stranger to manager Gary Forrest as he was part of the Shildon title winning team in the 2015/16 season.

Anthony Bell The attacking left winger came through the Cardiff development squad, and had some impressive displays at Darlington, Shildon and Whitby Town. Anthony is a talented individual who always has an eye for goal.
