1 How to Get Around Boston One of the best ways to get around Boston is through the MBTA (AKA “The T”)! Here’s how to use it:

First you’ll need a Charlie Card: • Although not completely necessary if you’re in a pinch, it’s way easier and faster to just scan your card and ride the train instead of trying to juggle $2.90. (Also if you don’t have the exact amount there’s no change!) You can get a Charlie card from the Star Market by West and Kenmore • Station. • Fares are cheaper with a Charlie card! ($2.40 for a one-way) • They can be reloaded at any underground stations

Get on at the front of the train/bus and press your Charlie Card against this:

Train/bus Station

And you’re good to go!

Here’s a handy guide for if you’re ever lost: https://www.bu.edu/lernet/pathways/direct.html

2 Some other great cost-efficient ways include:

Blue Bike

• Pick up a bike from one of the stands on or around campus and drop it off at another Blue Bike stand! • Download the app to check bike statuses • A subscription is $52 per year with student discount

BU Bus

• It’s completely free! Just wait at one of the designated stops and hop on! They can get crowded during class times so plan accordingly!

• All can be accessed with the new BU Transport app

• Keep in mind though that the timing is a little unreliable so if you’re on a tight schedule this might not be the best option.

3 Important BU Buildings When signing up for classes the building codes can get confusing. Use this easy guide to figure out where your classes are at!

10 Dorm Hacks

• Fix shaky/loud doors from wind with a towel over the door Boston can get pretty windy and can cause some dorm doors to rattle pretty loudly. To stop this just hang a towel over the top of your door before closing it to stop the shaking!

• Umbrella It rains pretty often so don’t forget an umbrella! Beware the wind tunnels though. If your umbrella is weak it could flip over or go flying with the wind!

• Bed risers Bed risers are a great way to create extra storage space under your bed!

• Command Hooks These are really handy for hanging up towels, bags, or even your keys! They’re also a great way to stay organized and keep items from cluttering your floor.

11 Helpful Tips

• ERC: free peer tutoring Need help with a certain class? Check out peer tutoring here: https://www.bu.edu/erc/peer-tutoring/#FAQs

• Wait to buy textbooks Sometimes it’s better to wait! Some professors don’t require you to buy the textbook so don’t buy them right away! • You can also usually find better deals on your BU class Facebook page for used textbooks from other students or even from Amazon!

• Registration Don’t forget to check where your classes are before registering! Take into account where your classes are located before registering! Since BU is basically one long strip of buildings you don’t want to be stuck on one side and have a class on the opposite side! Especially if you don’t have much time to get there.

• Always check Rate My Professor If you have a variety of professors to choose from for a course, it’s a good idea to check this website to get a feel for their teaching style, if you'll need certain textbooks, and workload.
