  • 1 Chapter 1 Introduction As a Chinese Buddhist in Malaysia, I Have Been
Chapter 1 Introduction As a Chinese Buddhist in Malaysia, I have been unconsciously entangled in a historical process of the making of modern Buddhism. There was a Chinese temple beside my house in Penang, Malaysia. The main deity was likely a deified imperial court officer, though no historical record documented his origin. A mosque serenely resided along the main street approximately 50 meters from my house. At the end of the street was a Hindu temple decorated with colorful statues. Less than five minutes’ walk from my house was a Buddhist association in a two-storey terrace. During my childhood, the Chinese temple was a playground. My friends and I respected the deities worshipped there but sometimes innocently stole sweets and fruits donated by worshippers as offerings. Each year, three major religious events were organized by the temple committee: the end of the first lunar month marked the spring celebration of a deity in the temple; the seventh lunar month was the Hungry Ghost Festival; and the eighth month honored, She Fu Da Ren, the temple deity’s birthday. The temple was busy throughout the year. Neighbors gathered there to chat about national politics and local gossip. The traditional Chinese temple was thus deeply rooted in the community. In terms of religious intimacy with different nearby temples, the Chinese temple ranked first, followed by the Hindu temple and finally, the mosque, which had a psychological distant demarcated by racial boundaries. I accompanied my mother several times to the Hindu temple. Once, I asked her why she prayed to a Hindu deity.

  • A Case Study of Urban Development in Klang Valley Region, Malaysia
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Institutional Repository ASSESSMENT OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND LANDUSE CHANGES’ IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT: A CASE STUDY OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT IN KLANG VALLEY REGION, MALAYSIA Ahris Yaakup Mansor Ibrahim Susilawati Sulaiman Zulherman M.Sosi Jabatan Perancangan Bandar dan Wilayah Universiti Teknologi Malaysia 81300 Skudai, Johor, malaysia Email: [email protected] Abstract The increasing demand for housing, employment opportunities, institutions and other urban facilities and services due to migration of rural and town’s dwellers to urban centres leading to drastic changes of urban land covers is believed to be the main factor contributing to the degradation of environmental qualities, namely the increase in temperature, geohazard occurrences, as well as noise, air and water pollution in urban areas. Analyses using various GIS functions were carried out to illustrate the relationship between urban development as well as land use changes and the degradation of environmental qualities in Klang Valley Region. This paper will look into the impact imposed by urban development and land use change upon the trend of environmental quality described earlier. 1.0 INTRODUCTION The framework for urban development and management can be viewed as a complex system, changes in one area e.g intensification of use or changes in management practice will often lead to change and pressure elsewhere. As such, the need to consider environmental issues in planning and policy-making is of greater concern today considering the impact imposed by development. Environmental impact due to development and urban growth has since act as a check and balance in achieving the so called ‘sustainable development’.

  • Management of Environmental Issues Related to Capital Dredging Works at Port Klang, Malaysia
MANAGEMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES RELATED TO CAPITAL DREDGING WORKS AT PORT KLANG, MALAYSIA Rajoo Addakann1 ABSTRACT Port Klang is Malaysia’s leading port with two main navigational entrances / exits. The Northern Pulau Angsa Approach is via the dredged North Channel, 153 meters wide with maintained declared depth of 11.3 meters below Chart Datum (m CD). The Southern approach lies adjacent to the North bound lane of the Malacca Straits Traffic Separation. The South Channel has a width of 365 meters with a maintained declared depth of 15.5 m below CD. Capital dredging work is proposed in order to upgrade the North access channel to the same width and a declared depth of 365 meters & 15.5 m below CD respectively as that of the Southern approach. The capital dredging volume involved is approximately 39 million cubic meters. The mainland bordering the port is the most developed region in the country. Mangrove forests cover the undeveloped coastal zones within and at areas bordering the port. Inter tidal mud flats and natural islands off the port provide protection and environmental buffer zones. The gazetted port area and its surroundings also include numerous fishing villages, cage fish farms, cockle breeding farms and artificial reefs to promote natural fish breeding. The port area is a multi user environment with significant natural buffer zones. Hence implementation of this major capital dredging project requiring relocation of very large quantities of dredged materials will cause multi-user conflicts, socio-economic impacts as well as concerns for environmental protection. Adequate studies, investigations and planning have been carried out to identify and address all issues on environmental impacts, environmental monitoring and mitigation measures to be adopted for the successful implementation of the project with minimal impact.
