  • Huddersfield (Town Centre and University) to Holmfirth (Town Centre)
Holmfirth Transitional Town Proposed Cycle Route – Huddersfield (town centre and university) to Holmfirth (town centre). The proposal seeks to create, as far as possible, an off road cycle path between the town centres of Huddersfield and Holmfirth, together with link paths from other significant Holme Valley settlements, notably Honley, Brockholes, Netherthong, New Mill and Wooldale. In addition to these settlements there are a number of other significant workplace and school destinations linked to or on the proposed route, notably Thongsbridge, Armitage Bridge, Lockwood, Folly Hall, Kirklees College, and Honley and Holmfirth High Schools Where an off road path is not considered to be achievable, the proposed route utilises the road network, with appropriate amendments and improvements to create a safe cycling environment. The existing and proposed routes are described below in clearly identifiable sections. Existing routes include some off road paths which are usable and used currently for cycling, and which will become part of the complete route, subject to any necessary improvements. Where off road paths connect to the road network, and for on road elements of the route, improvements to create a safe cycling environment are proposed. The route sections 1. Huddersfield town centre, within the ring road 2. Ring Road to Lockwood 3. Lockwood to Berry Brow 4. Berry Brow to Honley 5. Honley to Thongsbridge 6. Thongsbridge to Holmfirth 1. Huddersfield town centre – within the ring road The town centre is generally regarded as a relatively safe cycling environment. Traffic levels have been reduced by the introduction of bus gates, and speeds are relatively low. Some cycling infrastructure has been provided and there are some signed routes and safe ring road crossings, however provision is piecemeal and further improvements are required.

The Easter celebrations at both churches were great occasions with many people joining the throng of attendees. It was good to see Dean Henry celebrating with great gusto and style at St Mary’s and fantastic to see so many children at St George’s. Both Churches looked radiant in their decoration and all credit and thanks to those who cleaned and decorated them for the occasion. St Mary’s alterations, by way of the forward dais, were finished right on schedule and the work completed a great credit to the craftsmanship of John Dean and Bryan Hodgson. Their competence, enthusiasm and patience is borne out by their excellent work, and many thanks are due to them for the finished article.

The choice of a Christian name for the new baby is one of the challenges of many a father and mother. Fashions change and what was acceptable years ago is no longer, and vice versa. Families require the continuance of certain family names in each generation. There is pressure to be "different” or to imitate the ‘Celeb’ of the day.

  • Trouble in Honley and Holmfirth
10.5920/beerhouses.09 chapter 9 209 Trouble in Honley and Holmfirth THE INtroDUCTION OF the WRCC into the Upper Agbrigg district had been achieved with some difficulty but, after five years, there were encouraging signs that suggested that a modus vivendi was being established between the new police and the bulk of the population. Indeed, when, between the 24th of June and the 9th of July 1862, the men of the WRCC were inspected, it was the judgement of Lt. Col. J. Woodford, Her Majesty’s Inspector for the Northern District, and formerly Chief Constable of the Lancashire County Constabulary, that they had ‘been maintained in a highly satisfactory state of discipline and efficiency’.1 Regarding Upper Agbrigg, he was ‘satisfied with the state of the men, books and cells, everything being regular and satisfactory’.2 Such positive and reassuring statements must have appeared very strange to many local people as the police inspection coincided, almost exactly, with two major demonstrations of anti-police sentiment in Honley and Holmfirth, which revealed a widespread antipathy towards the police and certain police methods and cast important light on problems facing the ‘new’ police in the 1860s. On the 28th of June 1862 the Leeds Mercury carried a report under the eye-catching by-line: ‘Desperate Attack On The Police By A Mob Near Huddersfield’. The riot came out of the blue and was avidly covered by the local and regional press and even gained mention in the national press.3 The arrival of the ‘new’ police in Honley had been largely uncontroversial but matters changed with the transfer of PC Edward Antrobus to the village.
