EMU’S JOHN BOWLER NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-MAC First EMU player to earn first-team honors since Earl Boykins in 1997-98

CLEVELAND, Ohio--Eastern Michigan University senior forward John Bowler (Chicago, Ill.-Notre Dame H.S.) has been named first team All-Mid-American Conference for the 2005-2006 season in a vote by the league’s 12 head coaches. Bowler is the first EMU player to earn first-team honors since Earl Boykins pulled off the feat in 1997-98.

Joining Bowler on the All-MAC first team were Romeo Travis (Akron), DeAndre Haynes (Kent State), Jay Youngblood (Kent State), and William Hatcher (Miami).

Bowler is leading the MAC in both scoring and rebounding and is the lone MAC player to average double figures in both scoring and rebounding this season, finishing the year with a 20.1 scoring mark and a 10.8 rebound average. The Eagles’ season ended Monday (March 6) in the first round of the MAC Tournament when they dropped a 60-55 decision at Western Michigan.

Bowler turned in one of the top seasons in EMU and MAC history in 2005-2006 by averaging the double- double. He recorded 17 double-doubles this season and had 32 in his four-year career. He is the first EMU player since (1987-88) to average at least 20 points with 10-plus rebounds in a season. Long averaged 23.0 points and 10.4 rebounds to lead EMU.

Bowler finished his career as the 11th-leading scorer in EMU history with 1,427 points and his 801 career rebounds is fifth best in history. He made 443 free throws in 2005-06 to rank 3rd in single-season history. Bowler is one of just three players in school history to score more than 1,400 points and grab more than 800 rebounds. The other two players in that category are Kennedy McIntosh (2,219 points and 1,426 rebounds) and Grant Long (1,469 points and 863 rebounds).
