Successful Speaker Series Continues this Fall This past year, the Princeton Club of GA initiated a Luncheon Speaker Series to bring together local alumni interested in hearing and engag- ing some of the most interesting alumni around. We were very fortunate to kick off this new series with lunches featuring: U.S. Representative Jim Marshall '72. Jim, who represents Georgia's 8th Congressional District, gave a frank and humorous talk on the problems facing (and created by) Congress. He has been an Army Ranger, mayor of Macon, and a law professor, and he was just as inter- esting as you'd expect someone with that background to be. More than 25 Princetonians and Princeton parents met with Jim in March.

Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay '81. Rich addressed a luncheon crowd of more than 35 Tigers in May. Before assuming his present post, Rich worked as a lawyer in private practice, as General Manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and then as GM of the Falcons. He focused his remarks on the off-field "business" of the NFL, rather than on the Falcons' performance on the field. His comments on televi- sion contracts, labor negotiations, and on his boss, Arthur Blank, were fascinating.

Graduate School Dean William Russel. As part of Dean Russel’s Regional Dinner Series, the Graduate School’s Dean traveled to Atlanta in January. Prior to his dinner engagement with Graduate Alumni, Bill was kind enough to speak to other interested alumni over lunch. He shared his perspectives and shed light on the state of the Graduate School and its relationship with the Undergraduate University. Our next two scheduled luncheons will feature:

University Trustee and Vice President and General Counsel of Turner Broadcasting, Louise Sams '79. On Thursday, August 26, at noon at King & Spalding, Louise will speak on current topics facing the University, including the recent Eating Club Task Force report and the Aspire campaign, which seeks to raise $1.75 billion for Princeton. Louise will also take questions following her remarks. Program Director of the Atlanta Beltline Project, Rob Brawner '96. On Thursday, October 7, at noon at King & Spalding, Rob will talk about this innovative effort to turn abandoned railways and rights-of-way into parks, multi-use trails, and mass transit corridors that connect 45 neighborhoods in a 22-mile circle around Atlanta. This ambitious project will span 25 years and is expected to cost nearly $3 billion, and Rob will talk all about how this project started, how much it's already accomplished, and the obstacles still facing the Beltline. To RSVP to either the 8/26 Louise Sams event or the 10/7 Rob Brawner event, contact Pam Sauls at 404-572-3460 or [email protected]. .If .you . have . an. idea. . for . an . alumni . . speaker, . . .please . . contact . . Woodrow Wilson Community Service Award - Looking for Volunteers Established in 1985 and unique to the Princeton Club of Georgia, the Woodrow Wilson Community Service Award honors Atlanta area high school juniors who, through community involvement and personal initiative, best exemplify the ideals of service and volunteerism es- poused by Woodrow Wilson, former President of the United States and of Princeton University. The ideal winner is someone who volun- teers not to fulfill requirements or to build a resume but to better the community and oneself - service is a part of everyday life and part of being a good citizen. Past winners have created their own service projects, have made long-term commitments to established commu- nity service projects, or have taken existing projects to the next level. The selection process for this year’s winner is currently underway. Once the winner has been selected from our group of five finalists, all honorees will be invited to the State Capitol Building for the award ceremony. The winner will then be presented with a cash prize and all finalists will be presented with plaques and afforded the opportunity to take a photograph with Georgia’s governor. We look forward to sharing the results with you and honoring our young community service leaders, so please be on the lookout for the announcement of the winner and information about the time and location of the award ceremony. For the coming year, volunteers are needed to assist with compiling and mailing application packets, reviewing applicant submissions, and planning the award ceremony. In the face of an ongoing economic recession, the Atlanta and North Georgia Region achieved our very aggressive participation goal of 60% with 487 alums contributing more than $280,000 - an average gift of $575. With less than a week to go in this year’s Campaign, it didn’t look like we could achieve these numbers. However, thanks to the continuing generosity and responsiveness of our local alumni group, we achieved results for which both present and future generations of Princetonians are and will be extremely grateful. With the number of alums in our Region now exceeding 800, Bill Kaspers ’70 could really use some assistance with next year’s Cam- paign. If you are interested in assisting Bill with Annual Giving, please call Bill directly at 404-888-3740. If it weren’t fun, Bill wouldn’t still be doing it for all of these years..
