    Some Old Roads of North Berkshire- By the late GABRIELLE LAMBRICK HE area of Berkshire of which the old highways are discussed in the T following pages is that bounded on the north-west, north and east by the gr~at loop of the Thames from north of Faringdon, through Oxford, to Abing­ don, and on the south by the River Ock, with an extension from the middle valley of the Ock (in the Vale of White Horse; to Wantage, at the foot of the Berkshire Downs. Between Faringdon and Cumnor there is a long ridge or plateau running parallel with the right bank of the Thames and falling in a fairly steep escarpment to the river on the north and by a much more gradual slope to the Vale of White Horse and the valley of the Ock on the south. At right angles to this ridge, from its higher end at Cumnor Hurst, there runs the short sub­ sidiary ridge of Boars Hill and Foxcombe Hill, rising above the 500 ft. contour at its north-western extremity and falling steeply on both sides to the valley of the Thames south of Oxford on the one hand and to the valley of the Ock on the other. There is evidence that this part of the Thames valley was inhabited from prehistoric times onwards, and that there were Romano-British occupation sites at Abingdon and up the valley of the Ock. Anglo-Saxon settlements proliferated not only in the river valleys, but also along the Cumnor-Faringdon ridge and below the slopes of the Downs.

    Introduction Vale of White Horse District Council is currently preparing a new Local Plan, jointly with South Oxfordshire District Council. Supporting this process, Vale of White District Council held a ‘Call for sites’ consultation in April to May 2020. Please be aware the Call for Sites is purely a data gathering exercise. It allows landowners, agents, developers, community groups and others who are interested in having land considered for a range of different uses to submit site information to the council that they would like to be assessed. Sites submitted for consideration have been set out in this register. The site register and maps are published for information and have no status in planning. The Call for Sites does not grant planning permission to any sites submitted or confirm that the sites are suitable for development. The sites submitted in the 2020 Call for Sites are one source of information that the council will use to consider which sites might be suitable for allocation through the Local Plan. Other potential sites and sources also need to be considered, including those sites submitted previously to the Local Plan 2031 Part 1 and Part 2. The documents and appendices (which list the sites) can be found on the Local Plan Part 1 and Local Plan Part 2 webpages. The planning merits of the sites will be considered using the criteria and method consistent with relevant government guidance, the outcome of which will be published in a Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (HELAA).     Better Broadband update - December 2017 This has been a quarter of contrasts. The programme has achieved our target of 95% superfast broadband coverage in Oxfordshire, just ahead of the December 2017 Government objective. Take up of superfast services enabled by the programme now exceeds 50%, with over 100,000 people now accessing fast digital services who would not otherwise have been able to. Meanwhile delivery of actual new coverage during the quarter has remained slow. The Openreach team have completed a lot of preparation work, lining up some 50 structures to be delivered by 31st December. This will be a challenge, and planning around roadworks during the festive season needs to be carefully managed. We expect Openreach to be just on track with the original overall volume target, but we are working to raise this target to ensure all the communities in scope are delivered, albeit with around 2,000 premises needing to be part of the 2018 phase. The Better Broadband map will be updated shortly to reflect this and the team always welcome any enquiries regarding revised timetables. The biggest impediment to moving these remaining structures forward with delivery is achieving the necessary wayleaves, where cabinets or access to power is required on private land. I am delighted by the signing of our first co-funded community at Goosey Wick and was pleased to meet the residents on site. The team continues to actively contact parish councils and communities where this approach is likely to be most viable. As a reminder, this scheme applies when the cost of delivering fibre infrastructure is simply too high for the public purse to fund entirely.

    Social Mobility in the Fourteenth Century: The Example of the Chelreys of Berkshire By P. J. JEFFERIES DMUND Chelrey was born a few years after the beginning of the [4th century, E the eldest son of a Berkshire family of slender means, lords of no manors and bearing no title of gentility. He lived and worked through a period of recession in agriculture and recurrent and dramatic visitations of ti,e plague. By the time of his deatll in [372 he had established himself as a knight and a landholder of substance in his native county where his descendants were able to live in the comfortable style of landed gentry. Though ti,e meaning of knight may be seen as a clear title the term gentry in this period is more complex. What we have is a number of definitions : men with land valued at £20 p.a., men dubbed knights, men described as' valettus', , esquire', 'gentilman', often coming from long-established families and having knightly birth and training, and landholders of some substance. Though each of these might claim to be valid for a part their sum is too rigid for a class which was wide and evolving; and a definition of gentry remains elusive. A detailed study of individuals and families can contribute to building up a concept of' gentry'. One of ti,e agents of evolution in the gentry class was a career, an important means by which to enter tile class, and for established gentry to increase or reinvigorate their estates. Among those careers was the law and a useful example of its potential rewards is provided by the career of Edmund Chelrey.
