  • A Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols
The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge Final Logo Brand Extension Logo 06.27.12 A FESTIVAL OF NINE LESSONS & CAROLS THE CENTENARY SERVICE Sir Stephen Cleobury SIR STEPHEN CLEOBURY CBE Six months after the centenary service of A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, Stephen Cleobury was appointed Knight Bachelor in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. This richly-deserved recognition of his ‘services to choral music’ brought tremendous pleasure and delight to the Choir and College, and to the many more who have attended Chapel services and listened to broadcasts, webcasts and recordings since Stephen became Director of Music in 1982. Since that time, he has chosen and conducted the music for 37 years of choral worship: for Christmas and Easter, as well as for thousands of daily chapel services. The sound of the Choir under his direction has reached the ears and touched the hearts of countless millions of people. Hundreds of boys and young men have been Choristers or Choral Scholars and there have been no fewer than 23 Organ Scholars. His influence as a teacher and a role model to young musicians has been as extraordinary as the way in which he has extended the reach of the Chapel’s music through recording, broadcasting and touring. As the College makes this recording of the Centenary Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols available, we once again salute Sir Stephen’s extraordinary achievements and pay tribute to the qualities of musicianship, leadership, commitment and dedication that lie behind all that he has given, and all that we have so gratefully received.

Lectionnaire en français, Le Lectionnaire Œcuménique Révisé Isaiah 9: (1), 2-7. Isaiah speaks of new hope to come in his own day for the war-torn regions of Zebulun and Naphtali (see map above), the heart of Galilee, which became the center of the ministry of Jesus. Psalm response: Psalm 96 (UMH 815). A psalm of jubilant praise for the glorious reign of God! If you want a chant tone for the provided response, try B-D-G-B; E-C-B-A. Or, use the refrain from "O Come, Let Us Adore Him" (UMH 234) and, for chanting, G- F#-A-G; B-A-C-B in G-major. Titus 2:11-14 The grace of God has appeared in the incarnation of Jesus Christ. God's grace in Christ cleanses and frees us from the power of sin. This means we can become thoroughly committed to good deeds. Luke 2:1-20 Jesus is born, angels announce this to shepherds, and Mary ponders the message of the shepherds in her heart.

  • The Rt Revd the Bishop of Southwark by Email Only Dear Bishop Mission
The Rt Revd the Bishop of Southwark Rex Andrew Pastoral By email only Our ref: NB37/256b 30 October 2020 Dear Bishop Mission and Pastoral Measure 2011 Benefice and parish of All Saints, Spring Park; and parishes of St George, Shirley; and Shirley (also known locally as St John, Shirley) Proposed Pastoral Scheme Following the publication of the draft Pastoral Scheme providing for: (i) the dissolution of the benefice and parish of All Saints, Spring Park and the division of the area of its parish between the parishes of St George, Shirley; and Shirley (also known locally as St John, Shirley); (ii) the parish church of All Saints, Spring Park to become a chapel of ease in the parish of Shirley; (iii) the transfer of the parsonage house of the benefice of All Saints, Spring Park to the Southwark Diocesan Board of Finance as diocesan glebe we received 45 representations against the draft Scheme, 12 in favour, three letters of comment and five which were received out of time (one of which consists of photographs supplementing a representation made within time). The draft Scheme carried the following as the diocesan rationale for your proposals: As the result of ongoing concerns about the financial viability and capacity for governance and mission going forward, the Bishop of Southwark held a Visitation to the parish of All Saints, Spring Park in 2016. This was conducted by the Bishop and Archdeacon of Croydon. A series of Directions were issued as a result of this, designed to help the parish to address these areas. There has sadly been no evidence that this has been the case nor has the parish demonstrated the future capacity to do so.

  • St Paul's Cathedral Annual Report 2010
Annual Report 2010 Mission Statement St Paul’s Cathedral stands as a symbol and focus of the presence of God in the world and is served by a community of people who work and worship in this place. Founded in 604, we continue to share in the ministry of the Bishop and Diocese of London and in the wider mission of the Church throughout the world. In the 21st century we present a place of refreshment and encounter in which Church, City and nation meet to celebrate a common history and discern the kingdom of God within the new horizons of an international metropolis. Using our diverse skills we cherish for future generations the inheritance of worship, scholarship, teaching, music making, art and architectural craft. Valuing this inheritance we are committed to the cultural diversity, equal opportunities, and personal development of all who work here. We welcome all who visit this House of God. The Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral The Right Reverend Graeme Knowles Dean’s Report Dean of St Paul’s In 1955, Canon G L Prestige published his book, “St Paul’s in its at St George’s, Windsor. Both contributed much to the life and Glory 1831 – 1911”. In it he tracks and describes the ministries atmosphere of the Chapter House. We thank them for their work. of those who in the nineteenth century transformed the dark, During the year there were as usual services for the dirty and unloved building that was St Paul’s into the sparkling, United Guilds, the Seafarers, the Sons of the Clergy, vibrant place we enjoy now.

British theatre was at the same time largely commercial and offered a glamorous distraction from wider social and political realities. During the decade, however, new avant-garde approaches to drama emerged, both on the stage and on radio. The avant-garde was particularly vibrant in Paris where Samuel Beckett was beginning to challenge theatrical orthodoxies. Initially, managers and producers in BBC radio rejected a radio version of Beckett’s, Waiting for Godot and other experimental work was viewed with distaste but eventually Beckett was accepted and commissioned to write All That Fall (1957), a masterpiece of radio drama. Other Beckett broadcasts followed, including more writing for radio, extracts from his novels and radio versions of his stage plays as well as plays by the experimental radio dramatist, Giles Cooper. This article examines the different change agents which enabled an initially reluctant BBC to convert enthusiastically to the avant-garde. A networked group of younger producers, men and women, played a vital role in the acceptance of Beckett as did the striking pragmatism of senior radio managers. A willingness to accept the transnational cultural flow from Paris to London was also an important factor. The attempt to reinvent radio drama using ‘radiophonic’ sound effects (pioneered in Paris) was another factor for change and this was encouraged by growing competition from television drama on the BBC and ITV.
